Race 1: Variety Maiden H'cap - 1400m
1st – Mother Moo 2nd – Tigerlicious 3rd – Excellent Dane 4th - Roselon

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mrs L Murphy to approve the late gear change to remove the Blinkers from HASTY DANE. Mrs Murphy was fined the sum of $200.

The start of this race was delayed when ROSELON underwent a veterinary examination after making contact with the enclosure gate during its preliminary. ROSELON was cleared to take its place in the field.

The start was further delayed when PANHANDLE and EXQUISITE ANGEL both proved difficult to load in the barriers before PANHANDLE reared over in the gates and became cast with its feet in the stall of EXQUISITE ANGEL. Following this, both horses were examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently scratched on veterinary advice at 12.40 pm. Trainer M. Mair was advised that a further barrier certificate would be required for EXQUISITE ANGEL prior to its next race start. Trainer’s representative Mr Hull was advised that 2 further barrier certificates would be required for PANHANDLE, one of which must be obtained in an official trial.

All monies invested on Exquisite Angel and Panhandle withdrawn by the order of the stewards at 12:40 to be refunded with the following deductions to bets placed on winner and place-getters prior to 12:40

34 cents in the dollar for the Winner Mother Moo
31 cents in the dollar for place of winner Mother Moo
31 cents in the dollar for 2nd place Tigerlicious
31 cents in the dollar for 3rd place Excellent Dane

DAWN BOY (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

CRAIGLEA CALIPSO (E. Wilkinson) overraced during the early stages.

HASTY DANE (J. Hoopert) raced wide throughout.

M. Gray, rider of THROBBING, was reprimanded for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

Race 2: Noosa Car & Truck Class 4 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Nero’s Fire 2nd – Ze Choice 3rd – I’m Busy 4th – Taira

MUSIC MAESTRO (J. Hoopert) was slow to begin.

TAIRA (L. Cassidy) blundered shortly after the start.

D. Green was afforded the opportunity to comment on the below market expectation performance of DARTH. Jockey Green stated that after travelling well in a favourable position during the early stages, the gelding failed to respond to his riding from the 600m onwards and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer H. Van Hoeyen was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance, however undertook to report to stewards any abnormality which becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance.

Stewards also afforded L. Cassidy the opportunity to comment on the performance of TAIRA. L. Cassidy stated that due to the step back in distance he did not anticipate the gelding having the necessary speed during the early stages to take up a forward position as it did at its most recent start. He added that after blundering at the start, the gelding was positioned further back from the main body of the field than he would have liked and, in the circumstances, was pleased with the overall performance.

Race 3: Caloundra Suspension Centre Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Captain Cooper 2nd – Bag Of Riddles 3rd – Show Coast 4th - Balmarossa

DOUBLE PLAY (B. Derbyshire), which proved difficult to load, reared as the start was effected and took no competitive part in the event. Trainer D. Wilson was advised that DOUBLE PLAY must barrier trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

BAG OF RIDDLES (M. Hellyer) and BOM CHICKA WAH WAH (J. Hoopert) were both tightened for room at the start between LUCKYSCAPE (E. Wilkinson) and CAPTAIN COOPER (K. Pope), which shifted out.

Approaching the 800m, BAG OF RIDDLES, which was being restrained in order to obtain cover, overraced for a short distance.

Leaving the 600m. BAG OF RIDDLES improved up on to the heels of SHOW COAST (G. Cooksley) and had to be steadied.

CAPTAIN COOPER was held up for clear running for a short distance leaving the 400m before altering course across heels near the 300m.

BALMAROSSA (G. Killen) raced wide throughout.

Jockey M. Hellyer was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BAG OF RIDDLES, in that leaving the 400m there appeared opportunity to shift to the outside of SHOW COAST (G. Cooksley) in order to afford that gelding clear running. Jockey Hellyer advised stewards that BAG OF RIDDLES did not quicken when pressured at the 400m and was not of the view that the horse would improve into the race outside SHOW COAST, however approaching the 100m, BAG OF RIDDLES commenced to respond to his riding and he was forced to shift out to avoid the heels of SHOW COAST. Jockey Hellyer stated that in hindsight he would have been better served securing clear running earlier than he did. Stewards advised jockey Hellyer that he should make every endeavour in all circumstances to secure clear running as early as possible in the home straight. Stewards felt that whilst jockey Hellyer had erred, in the circumstances his error in judgement was not so great that he should be held culpable under the rules.

A post-race veterinary examination of SALLY’S DIAMOND revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for SALLY’S DIAMOND prior to its next race start.

Race 4: Evantrans Australia Pty Ltd QTIS 2yo Maiden H'cap - 1000 m
1st – Interject 2nd – Show Us A Smile 3rd – Surf Fire 4th – Snyder

SUNDAY BONNET (T. Harrison) began awkwardly and made heavy contact with the barrier partition.

TODLINE (N. Nishio), which was slow to begin, was hampered and lost ground shortly after the start by SHOW US A SMILE (G. Goold), which shifted in abruptly after beginning awkwardly.

FACT OR FAKE (K. Matheson), LUCY (M. Vance) and CAPTAIN SPUR (E. Wilkinson) were all slow to begin.

Leaving the 1000m, TODLINE (N. Nishio) shifted in and away from AVERIL’S SUCCESS (G. Cooksley) and made contact with the running rail.

Passing the 800m, both SNYDER (T. Bell) and SHOW US A SMILE (G. Goold) were steadied when tightened for room between TODLINE and SURF FIRE (L. Cassidy), which shifted in and away from INTERJECT (J. Stanley). Following this incident, SNYDER shifted out, forcing both LUCY (M. Vance), which had been racing greenly, and GO THIAGO GO (J. Kropp) extremely wide on the track and causing both horses to become unbalanced.

TODLINE raced greenly throughout and at a point leaving the 400m shifted in abruptly and made contact with the running rail.

SHOW US A SMILE was unable to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight and was obliged to shift out across the heels of INTERJECT, which laid in under pressure from the 400m onwards.

Near the 200m, TODLINE (N. Nishio) was forced to race in restricted room and lost ground when tightened for room to the inside of CAPTAIN SPUR (E. Wilkinson), which after racing greenly throughout, shifted in under pressure at that point. Jockey E. Wilkinson, rider of CAPTAIN SPUR, was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount at this stage.

GO THIAGO GO laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 5: Caloundra RSL Class 1 H'cap – 1100m
1st – Magpie Jack 2nd – Beware Of Me 3rd – Sammy Junior 4th – She’s Candy

Shortly after the start, GRANDEUR KING (D. McWhinney) was tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing between BEWARE OF ME (B. Derbyshire) and EMERTON (A. Pattillo), which shifted in.

GRANDEUR KING raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded J. Stanley the opportunity to comment on the performance of ACCELERO. Jockey Stanley stated that he had been instructed to lead on the colt and as a result after beginning only fairly he was obliged to pressure the horse significantly in the first furlong. He explained that he was then comfortable with the tempo set in the middle stages, adding that ACCELERO then had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight and, in his opinion, proved disappointing from leaving the 500m. Trainer J. McLachlan confirmed his disappointment, adding that ACCELERO may be a horse which races best fresh and indicated that he would consider sending the horse for a short break prior to its next race start. Mr McLachlan undertook to report to stewards any abnormality which becomes apparent with the horse that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination of ACCELERO failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from A. Pattillo regarding the performance of EMERTON, which was below market expectation. Jockey Pattillo stated he was instructed to lead on the gelding, which he attempted to do, however was unable to muster sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside, adding that EMERTON hung in during the first 300m. He was of the opinion that the effort in attempting to secure the lead, coupled with the gelding being forced to race wide throughout, contributed to EMERTON not finishing the race off well, adding that the horse was again inclined to hang in over the final 400m. Trainer Mr M. Mair agreed with jockey Pattillo’s comments and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality with the horse which becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination of EMERTON failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

TONY’S PRIDE lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 6: At The Wire Bloodstock Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Mishani Archer 2nd – Handbag 3rd – Hoonourdo 4th – Open Heart

CHURCH LANE (R. Mason) began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping MORE BUBBLY (T. Bell).

HONOURDO (M. Hellyer) had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and into the early stages of the home straight.

HANDBAG (A. Spinks), MISHANI ARCHER (L. Cassidy) and PEARLARDI (K. Gates) raced wide throughout.

Apprentice T. Bell was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of MORE BUBBLY, which was below market expectation. T. Bell stated that after having difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and into the early part of the home straight, MORE BUBBLE proved disappointing from the 300m onwards when afforded clear running and could offer no tangible explanation for the performance. Trainer’s representative Mr Hull confirmed the stable’s disappointment and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality with the horse which becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination of MORE BUBBLY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities

Race 7: Variety Class 3 Plate - 1100m
1st – Forty Zip 2nd – Famous Cry 3rd – Lion Beauty 4th – Metaphysical

The start was delayed after FORTY ZIP (E. Wilkinson) became fractious in the barriers, having to be withdrawn, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. LION BEAUTY, which was in the adjoining barrier, was also cleared to start by the veterinary surgeon. Trainer S. McKinnon was advised that a warning would be placed on FORTY ZIP regarding its barrier manners.

STALWART ANIKA (G. Cooksley) reared as the start was effected and lost significant ground.

METAPHYSICAL (L. Dillon) was slowly into stride.

Near the 900m, ZOFA (S. Scriven) and LADY GOWER (D. McWhinney) bumped and became awkward when LADY GOWER shifted in and away from GREY MAMBO (M. Hellyer).

At the 800m, FLAGGES FLYING (S. Galloway), when the pace slackened, had to be steadied from the heels of FORTY ZIP (E. Wilkinson).

Passing the 600m, LADY GOWER was obliged to race in restricted room and lost ground between ZOFA, which hung out at that point, and GREY MAMBO (M. Hellyer), which shifted in slightly.

LADY GOWER was held up for a short distance leaving the 300m before being obliged to alter course around the heels of NOAH’S SMILE (M. Vance) to secure clear running approaching the 200m.

GREY MAMBO, FORTY ZIP, LION BEAUTY (T. Bell) and FAMOUS CRY (G. Goold) raced wide for the majority of the event.

S. Galloway was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of FLAGGES FLYING and was also questioned as to the horse being positioned in the second half of the field, which was in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Jockey Galloway stated that he had attempted to ride the horse forward to a position on the speed, however, in his opinion, the fast tempo set in the early stages and the gelding not appreciating the synthetic surface resulted in the horse being positioned further back in the field than anticipated and this had an effect on the overall performance. He was also of the view that FLAGGES FLYING, after securing clear running in the home straight, was doing its best work over the final 200m and found the line well.

Race 8: Auscredits Class 2 H'cap - 1600m
1st – Threatened Danger 2nd – Captain Fastbuck 3rd – Galaxy King 4th – Business Day

When the pace slackened near the 1300m, THREATENED DANGER (S. Galloway) lost ground when restrained from the heels of LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE. As a result of this, KWILA SUNRISE (G. Goold) shifted in, tightening the running of AESSEX (M. Vance), which had to be steadied.

BUSINESS DAY (T. Bell) laid out under pressure in the home straight.

CHEVALLUM PARK (G. Killen) and CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (A. Spinks) raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded E. Wilkinson the opportunity to comment on the performance of LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE. E. Wilkinson stated that, in his opinion, the gelding raced flat today and he recommended to connections to send the horse for a spell. Trainer T. Miller agreed with jockey Wilkinson’s comments and advised that LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE will be sent for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination of LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards also afforded L. Cassidy the opportunity to comment on the performance of SNIPER’S SHOT, which was below market expectations. Jockey Cassidy stated that from today’s wide alley he was forced to pressure the horse to race in a forward position and that the mare, in his opinion, raced too keenly in the early stages and did not settle until near the 900m. He added that SNIPER’S SHOT is more suited to racing on the turf surface and may not have appreciated the quick back up from its most recent start. He added that the horse was under pressure from approaching the 400m. Trainer L. Treloar advised he would continue with the horse’s current preparation and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality with the horse which becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SNIPER’S SHOT failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards questioned apprentice M. Vance regarding the tactics adopted on AESSEX, in particular from the 800m until approaching the 400m. Of particular concern to stewards was the section leaving the 800m where Miss Vance appeared to lose ground and shift wider on the track. Miss Vance was also asked to explain her reasons for not pressuring AESSEX to remain in a position on the back of CAPTAIN FASTBUCK when that horse commenced to improve into the race leaving the 600m. Miss Vance explained that she had been instructed by trainer J. Caught that AESSEX has previously had a tendency to not race comfortably amongst other horses and therefore she was to endeavour to position the gelding wider on the track as early as possible so that AESSEX could have an unimpeded run and improve gradually into the race. M. Vance also explained that she had attempted to remain on the back of CAPTAIN FASTBUCK, however, in her view, AESSEX did not quicken as she had anticipated and raced flat over the concluding stages. After also interviewing trainer J. Caught to confirm the instructions, stewards accepted Miss Vance’s explanation as to why she lost ground leaving the 800m. However stewards advised her that they were of the view she had erred in failing to show more urgency to hold the position on the back of CAPTAIN FASTBUCK leaving the 600m. Stewards however could not be satisfied that this failure was so great as to leave apprentice Vance culpable under the rules.
