STEWARDS REPORT Sunday July 25th 1999

WEATHER: Overcast
TRACK RATING: Heavy
Moveable rail in true position.

RACE 1
SANTA BARBARA HANDICAP 1400 metres

Stewards established some discrepancy as to whether G. Baker or apprentice J. Baker was declared as the rider of ROMAN SLAVE. After conferring with trainer T. Miller and the availability of apprentice J. Baker Stewards confirmed that apprentice J. Baker would fulfil that engagement as published.
As R. Griffiths was to be overweight he was replaced on CHARIOT'S DAY by B. Swanton and on HELLO NORMA JEAN (Race 5) by M. Cahill. R. Griffiths was fined the sum of $600 under AR 120(b) for accepting rides when found to be overweight.
ROMAN SLAVE and MY JEWEL came together on jumping away.
MYSTIC LADY and NEW ERA were both slow to begin.
NEW ERA lost the near hind plate during the event.
Approaching the 1000 metres RED KWILA and CELASTRAL brushed.
RED KWILA had to be steadied off the heels of CELASTRAL when taken out by JAKE ROBERT which shifted ground making the home turn.


RACE 2
MAROOCHYDORE HANDICAP 1000 metres

As A. Pattillo was to be overweight he was replaced on SOUL SHAKER by G. Baker and on COMIC BOOK Race 4) by K. Pope. A. Pattillo was fined the sum of $100 under
AR 120(b) for accepting rides when found to be overweight..
ST. PLATO reared high on jumping away and lost considerable ground.
Approaching the 800 metres ST. PLATO which began to over race, struck the heels of PINKY THE PAINTER and blundered badly. ST. PLATO was then forced to race very wide for the remainder of the event.


RACE 3
BAANYA BOY HANDICAP 1000 metres

EMILY BLUE was slow to begin.
CHINESE PRINCESS jumped away awkwardly and made contact with SWEETLIP.
FRANKLIN FAIR which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start by SENDEVE which shifted out.

RACE 4
MOOLOOLABA SURF CLUB HANDICAP 1400 metres

Acting on Veterinary advice MESSABINI was declared a late scratching at 8.05am when the gelding was found to be lame in the near hind hoof. Trainer B. Thornton was advised a Veterinary Certificate must be obtained for the gelding prior to its next race start.
Upon return to scale a protest was lodged by G. Baker rider of 2nd placed ORIARDA against RIVER OF LIFE ridden by K. Mahoney being declared the winner alleging interference over the final 200 metres.
At a protest inquiry it was established that after passing the 100 metres when placed under pressure RIVER OF LIFE shifted out hampering ORIARDA. After viewing the video and taking evidence from all parties Stewards were of the opinion that RIVER OF LIFE had shifted out and made contact with ORIARDA resulting in G. Baker being unable to ride ORIARDA out fully to the line and for this reason the objection was upheld and placing amended to 12 : 5 : 15.
K. Mahoney rider of RIVER OF LIFE was reprimanded over this incident and advised to exercise more care in future.


RACE 5
DES SCANLAN MEMORIAL HANDICAP 1200 metres

LITTLE FISH was slow to begin.
FOCAL POINT jumped away awkwardly.
Passing the 800 metres turn KIRKDALE ROAD shifted in and made contact with BLACK MAGIC which then became unbalanced and shifted in making contact with THRONE.


RACE 6
SUNSHINE COAST HELICOPTER RESCUE SERVICE HANDICAP 1200 metres

Trainer C. Richardson was fined the sum of $50 for failing to declare a rider for ROMAN NEWS by the required time.
Stewards declared SPY KING a late scratching at 11.11am as gelding had been banned from racing on a track rated as heavy.
PRINTEMPS was slow to begin.
Passing the 200 metres LATIN POET shifted out and made contact with GOLD COIN. GOLD COIN then became unbalanced and shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of SQUARE UP.


RACE 7
PRINCE CHARLES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION HANDICAP 1200 metres

Trainer D. Duke was fined the sum of $50 for neglecting to declare a replacement rider on EPHESUS which was subsequently ridden by S. Seamer.
SEYMOUR was slow to begin.
Passing the 600 metres PIET HEYN had to be steadied off the heels of EPHESUS.

Race 7 Contd..
A post race Veterinary examination, which included an endoscopic examination, of IMPERIAL JESTER which performed disappointingly failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer K. Davis was advised the gelding must now pass an official barrier trial prior to its next race start. IMPERIAL JESTER was sent to be swabbed.


RACE 8
MAROOCHY RIVER HANDICAP 1600 metres

Jockey R. Hoopert was reprimanded for being unable fulfil his engagement on ACADEMY BAY due to being overweight. ACADEMY BAY was subsequently ridden by W. Xuereb.
Near the 200 metres DONNIE BRASCO shifted out and made contact with MR. HUSH on two occasions.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DONNIE BRASCO jockey N. Jolly stated that the gelding travelled well until after passing the 500 metres however when placed under pressure DONNIE BRASCO failed to respond to his riding. Trainer G. Cameron stated he could off no excuse for the poor performance but advised it would be his intention to place DONNIE BRASCO in races over longer distances in future.
Trainer T. Miller was advised that WINCHESTER BAY which bled during the event will now incur the mandatory three month ban from racing.
