RACE 1
THOMPSON MCNICHOL HANDICAP 1600 metres

HIDDEN BEAUTY was slow to begin.
In the early stages TRANQUIL LAD raced ungenerously and at the 1200 metres shifted in resulting in CENTRAL BANKER being momentarily tightened for room. TRANQUIL LAD then hung out and raced wide from the 800 metres. Trainer M. Mair was advised that TRANQUIL LAD would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start.

RACE 2
JOHN BRAGG SIGNS HANDICAP 1600 metres

When passing the 800 metres CARLTON LAD had to be checked off the heels of SUN SCREEN which was steadied by its rider J. Taylor after assuming the lead.
J. Taylor rider of SUN SCREEN was advised to ensure that in similar circumstances he does not ease the pace too abruptly and cause difficulty for trailing runners.

RACE 3
MEN AT WORK LABOUR HIRE HANDICAP 1000 metres

At the 700 metres CHIEF’S TREASURE shifted out momentarily resulting in KELSO REEF and KRABLOONIK both being hampered.
Soon after entering the straight when tested with the whip KELSO REEF shifted out obliging its rider V. Schweida to stop riding and straighten that gelding.
At the 300 metres when again tested with the whip V. Schweida accidentally dropped her whip which necessitated her having to slap KELSO REEF down the neck with her right hand in order to place her horse under full pressure.
V. Schweida was advised by Stewards that her riding display on KELSO REEF fell short of what was expected of a provincial class rider and that any future rides of a similar nature could result in a review of her riding status.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHIEF’S TREASURE jockey G. Duffy stated that the horse showed good speed to settle outside the leader and after straightening he nursed the mare in the early stages of the straight because of its big weight. G. Duffy added that when he eventually pulled the whip near the 200 metres CHIEF’S TREASURE failed to respond and in fact compounded rather badly over the final stages.
A post race Veterinary examination of CHIEF’S TREASURE failed to reveal any abnormality.
