STEWARDS PANEL: Mr. S. Railton (Chairman) Mr G Ireland, Mr D Collingwood, Mr W Flynn, Mr J Hackett, Mr W Birch, Mr C Waller (Cadet).
WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD
RACE 1: YALUMBA BAROSSA WINES HANDICAP – 1000M.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by Garry Baker rider of 3rd placed FINAL STORM against SOVEREIGN IMPULSE ridden by Michael Carson being declared 2nd alleging interference approaching the 100 metres. It was established that approaching the 100 metres SOVEREIGN IMPULSE veered out abruptly severely hampering FINAL STORM. Stewards upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:
1st RUSSIAN KNIGHT
2nd FINAL STORM
3rd SOVEREIGN IMPULSE.
When FINAL STORM was taken out abruptly by SOVEREIGN IMPULSE near the 100 metres MIGHTY STRONGHOLD and GUNGADIN suffered some inconvenience.
GUNGADIN was slow to begin.
Prior to correct weight being declared Stewards considered an approach by the connections of BIGGE ISLE laying claim that the gelding may have been denied a fair start. Apprentice M. McDonald stated that as the start was affected BIGGE ISLE lashed out and appeared to get its near hind leg caught momentarily which resulted in the gelding losing considerable ground.
Whilst M. McDonald’s evidence was supported by the video footage Stewards deemed that BIGGE ISLE had not been denied a fair start under the terms stipulated by AR 134(A) and were satisfied that BIGGE ISLE’s difficulty at the start had been caused by the gelding being fractious.
RACE 2: NEIL MANSELL CONCRETE HANDICAP – 1200M.
SLICK OPERATOR jumped in at the start hampering WAGSTAFFE which resulted in WAGSTAFFE making contact with the hind quarters of FOREST SPRITE.
At the 900 metres EPIC FLYER had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by PERLE D’OR which shifted in. M. Gatt rider of PERLE D’OR was cautioned and advised to exercise more care.

RACE 3: XXXX HANDICAP – 1300M.
ANGELAH MOON was very slow to begin.
PALARIS also lost some ground at the start after jumping away awkwardly.
For a short distance after entering the straight IF YOU PLEASE raced in restricted room between BOMBAY SAPPHIRE and OPAL RAINBOW.
A post race Veterinary examination of MADAM FRENCH which compounded in the straight failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 4: BLACKLAW CIVIL CONTRACTORS HANDICAP – 1600M.
As apprentice D Gay was unable to meet his commitment on COMET WAY apprentice M. McDonald was substituted as the rider of that horse. D. Gay will be interviewed regarding this matter.
Trainer Craig Smith was fined the sum of $50 for failing to declare a rider for CHIEF DEHAR by the prescribed time.
COMET WAY and CHIEF DEHAR were both slow to begin.
Approaching the 1200 metres GENERAL FEELGOOD and GO SANDY came into contact.
Passing the 200 metres GENERAL FEELGOOD was disappointed for a run between AL THINGS and ZUCCARO which shifted out around the heels of SO RADICAL to obtain clear running. When disappointed GENERAL FEELGOOD shifted out abruptly hampering CHIEF DAHAR which had been held up for a short distance prior to this incident. M. Rodd rider of ZUCCARO was cautioned and urged to exercise more care when shifting ground.
QUIN THE ESKIMO and CARLTON LAD were both obliged to race wide throughout the event.
RACE 5: XXXX SUNSHINE COAST GUINEAS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES – 1600M.
SHA ALMA was slow to begin.
Soon after the start REPRENDRE was cramped for room between HELL RAISER and CLANGER.
Near the 1300 metres LITHE had to be checked when tightened for room between SHA ALMA and REPRENDRE which shifted in. Stewards accepted that REPRENDRE had at that stage shifted in and away from TAP TO IT despite the efforts of its rider M. Rodd.

TOPPA hung out in the middle stages of the event.
Near the 250 metres CLANGER faltered as that gelding appeared to shy at a piece of plastic on the course.
RACE 6: QUEENSLAND PINE COMPANY FURNITURE IN THE RAW GLASSHOUSE HANDICAP – 1400M.
Due to a misunderstanding D. Nicolic was originally declared as the rider of MABUZ (NZ) however due to his unavailability T. Thornton was substituted.
At the 1100 metres FETES GALANTES blundered after clipping the heels of MABUZ which had at that stage lost ground. It was established that MABUZ lost ground when steadied off the heels of FRITZ which shifted in when racing fiercely.
It was also found that at the same stage MABUZ received some crowding from ALPINE EXPRESS which was taken in by OUT BREAK which in turn had influence from SCENIC PEAK.
Whilst finding that he was not fully culpable for the incident M. Cahill rider of SCENIC PEAK was reprimanded.
A charge of careless riding issued against M. Cahill rider of SCENIC PEAK alleging that he allowed his mount to shift in at the 500 metres when not clear of OUT BREAK resulting in OUT BREAK being severely hampered was not sustained. Stewards afforded M. Cahill the benefit of the doubt in that FRITZ may have contributed to the hampering of OUT BREAK when racing ungenerously on that horse’s inside. Nonetheless M. Cahill was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear.
Passing the 200 metres FEDERAL AGENT had to be checked when disappointed for a run between KENCONCARNE and the tiring HOT RIFF.
M. Carson rider of POKING AROUND was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift out approaching the 100 metres when not clear of STORMY LODGE thereby contributing to severe crowding to STORMY LODGE and HOT RIFF .
In relation to the same incident C. Williams rider of KAPUNA was also found guilty to a charge of careless riding the careless riding being that he also contributed to the severe crowding of STORMY LODGE and HOT RIFF by allowing his mount to shift in tightening KENCONCARNE on to HOT RIFF.
Having regard to their good race riding records a penalty of 7 meetings was imposed upon M. Carson and C. Williams.
M. Carson’s period of suspension to commence at midnight on Sunday 7th July 2002 and to expire at midnight on Saturday 20th July 2002.
C. Williams’ period of suspension to commence immediately and to expire at midnight on Thursday 18th July 2002.

When obtaining a narrow run near the 100 metres PALLADIUM STAR brushed the hind quarters of both THE KILDARE KID and FRITZ. As a consequence of contact on the hind quarters THE KILDARE KID became unbalanced and shifted in further hampering KENCONCARNE. .
FINNIGAN had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight..
Over the concluding stages POKING AROUND was impeded for a run between KAPUNA and HUGE YEAR which shifted out slightly under pressure.
RACE 7: MAROOCHYDORE CENTRAL HOLDINGS CALOUNDRA CITY CUP – 2400M.
Trainer Cliff Brown was fined the sum of $100 for failing to declare a rider for CITRA’S PRINCE by the required time.
Soon after the start BRAVE PRINCE shifted out hampering ROYAL DANEHILL and LAURINEL ARGIE.
When the pace slackened at the winning post on the first occasion THE AWESOME CHANCE, SILENT IMPACT and KREISLER MIRAGE all had to be checked.
On the home turn MIDNIGHT DEAL had to be steadied when crowded for room between DESK TOP LOVER and VICTORY SMILE which shifted out to obtain clear running. S. Katsidis rider of VICTORY SMILE was reprimanded for shifting out when not quite clear of MIDNIGHT DEAL.
RACE 8: SUNCORP METWAY HANDICAP – 1300M.
VANISHING POWER was slow to begin.
After travelling a short distance FINAL FORECAST lost ground when cramped on to the hind quarters of HOOKMAN which after being slow to begin improved quickly to the inside of VAIN HALO (M. Gatt) which at that stage shifted in. Whilst Stewards accepted that he had made an endeavour to relieve the tightening M. Gatt was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to exercise sufficient care.
FINAL FORECAST had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of VLADIVOSTOK M. Cahill stated that the gelding did not feel right in its action and was a beaten horse at the 600 metres.
A post race Veterinary examination of VLADIVOSTOK revealed the gelding had sustained an abrasion on the left stifle and was also lame in the near hind. VLADIVOSTOK was swabbed.
ALL WINNERS plus VLADIVOSTOK (Race 8) WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
