As G Baker was also indisposed he was replaced on RADOMA (Race 7) by L Morrison and on KOOTENAY (Race 8) by M Carson.
RACE 1: PACIFIC FORD PLATE - 1300M.
GARRICK was inspected by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the event after the gelding struck the running rail on the way to the barriers. GARRICK was subsequently passed fit to start.
HIGH BUCK jumped away awkwardly and brushed PRINCESS POSER.
MITCHUM and DISTINCTLY SWEET came together at the start.
After being a little slow to begin MISS LEHAAR commenced to over race a short distance after and raced ungenerously until making the first turn. MISS LEHAAR then raced wide from the 700 metres.
Following the running of race 1 the track rating was upgraded to SLOW at 12.05pm.
RACE 2: GOLDEN BEACH NEWSAGENCY HANDICAP - 1000M.
Trainer G Ryan was fined the sum of $100 for failing to declare N Day as the rider of BANABOLDA by the required time.
M Rice was fined the sum of $400 for proceeding to the jockey's room and failing to weigh in as 2nd placegetter on KALINGA COUNTY.
When questioned regarding the performance of FINE SILVER apprentice K Cunningham stated that near the 600 metres the gelding lost ground when it was inclined to lay out when being eased away from the heels of another runner. K Cunningham further added that FINE SILVER did not feel entirely comfortable on the rain affected track and felt the gelding may be looking for further distance in its races.
RACE 3: GOLDEN BEACH NEWSAGENCY HANDICAP - 1000M..
As apprentice B Wade was indisposed he was replaced on GREY SANTA by M Rice.
ANOTHER GLANCE was inspected by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the event and passed fit to start.
Shortly after the start GREY SANTA shifted out to improve and made contact with REMBRANDTS VENTURE causing that horse to become unbalanced.
A short distance later REMBRANDTS VENTURE had to be steadied when tightened for room between STRATEGIC SPRING and GREY SANTA which continued to lay out.
Near the 600 metres GREY SANTA shifted in and made heavy contact with CONDY'S CRYSTAL. A short distance later GREY SANTA again shifted in resulting in CONDY'S CRYSTAL becoming unbalanced. M Rice rider of GREY SANTA was cautioned and advised to take greater care in future.
J Byrne reported that in his opinion PICK OF PICKS may not have been entirely suited after being bustled in the early stages as the gelding felt under pressure on straightening and did not finish the race as anticipated having a tendency to shift out over the concluding stages.
Stable representative Mr Broderick confirmed that PICK OF PICKS may not have been suited to racing near the lead and indicated he would notify Stewards should anything come to light over the next few days which may have affected the performance today.
RACE 4: TREXCARD AUSTRALIA HANDICAP - 1000M.
GYPSY GIRL which jumped awkwardly shifted in and tightened CHARMING CINDY shortly after the start.
Near the 800 metres PRINCE LOTTO had to be checked when racing to the inside of GYPSY GIRL which also had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SILVER HOPE which was taken in by FEEL LIKE A WOMAN when that horse had a tendency to shift in and away from TENT.
Near the 200 metres SILVER HOPE shifted out to improve and inconvenienced SEND A CODE.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GYPSY GIRL apprentice G McKeon stated that despite being tightened for room shortly after the start the filly did not feel comfortable on the rain affected track and when asked for an effort in the straight GYPSY GIRL did not respond as expected.
A post race Veterinary examination of GYPSY GIRL revealed the filly pulled up suffering from mild respiratory distress. GYPSY GIRL was sent to be swabbed.
RACE 5: CALOUNDRA RSL HANDICAP - 1600M.
Trainer John Collins was fined the sum of $200 for failing to declare Z Purton as the rider of DEVASTATING by the required time.
IMPREGNABLE and COSMIC COMET both jumped away awkwardly.
LITTLE BIT LIVELY was inclined to over race in the early stages and J Byrne reported that the saddle shifted in running.
RACE 6: WOOMBYE SUPA IGA HANDICAP - 1600M.
As S Killen was indisposed he was replaced on EMILIANO by J Byrne.
ARNAULT shifted out at the start and made contact with EMILIANO forcing that gelding out on to COERCED.
ARNAULT and BLUES SPECIAL were both caught wide rounding the first turn and both horses were obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.
RACE 7: SCHULTZ TOOMEY O'BRIEN LAWYERS HANDICAP - 1000M.
MIRACLE SOUND was declared a late scratching at 3.08pm when the gelding failed to arrive on course.
On the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on MIRACLE SOUND were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 16c in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 14c in the dollar on the face value of place bets being applicable on all bets placed prior to 3.08pm.
Trainer T Thomas was fined the sum of $500 for failing to present MIRACLE SOUND for racing as he had intended to withdraw the horse. He added he had failed to notify the withdrawal as prescribed by the rules (AR 114 (c).
HULA EXPRESS which was fractious in the barriers, shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of ARMIDALE HEIGHTS.
Passing the 600 metres LIKE A SOUTHERLY raced ungenerously and had to be restrained off the heels of LAVOISIER and shifted out.
D Browne reported that DANE'S JESTER was not comfortable on the rain affected track.
RACE 8: NORTHERN CITY FINANCE HANDICAP - 1300M.
Trainer D Forster was fined the sum of $100 for failing to declare a rider for KOOTENAY by the prescribed time.
BIRUBI CHOSEN jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
NARWHAL was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1100 metres TYCOON ROSE had to be eased to avoid the heels of SABRE SONIC which shifted in.
A short distance later TYCOON ROSE, after being steadied, shifted out inconveniencing CANNY CRUISE which became unbalanced.
When the pace slowed rounding the first turn ORDER ARMS had to be eased off the heels of HAMAH.
BIRUBI CHOSEN and NARWHAL which were trailing, were both inconvenienced.
RACE 9: WOOMBYE PUB HANDICAP - 1400M.
Trainer P Dawson was fined the sum of $100 for failing to withdraw ISADORABLE prior to the scratching deadline. ISADORABLE was subsequently withdrawn at 8.15am.
FUN ADDICT was slow to begin.
SUN NEVER SETS shifted out abruptly shortly after the start.
Near the 1300 metres TARRASCH had to be checked when racing between COOPER KING which was taken out slightly by FUN ADDICT and CANNY NORTHERNER which shifted in. Whilst Stewards were unable to apportion total blame to C Kearney rider of CANNY NORTHERNER due to slight movement from runners on the inside of TARRASCH. Jockey C Kearney was none-the-less reprimanded and instructed to allow more room when crossing.
From this point TARRASH was inclined to over race and leaving the 800 metres had to be steadied off the heels of DESTINY MAGIC.
All winners plus GYPSY GIRL (Race 4) were sent to be swabbed.
