Supplementary Report

As N. Thomas and A. Merritt were ill, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

Race 1: Reed Property Group Maiden Plate - 1400m
1st – Golden Glimpse 2nd – First Lieutenant 3rd –Sir Emland 4th - Lozenge

The start of this race was delayed to allow a pre-race veterinary examination of YWERA to be carried out. YWERA was cleared to take its place in the field.

THE SNICSTER (K. Pope), LOZENGE (M. Heagney) and YWERA (L. Herne) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 700m, THE SNICSTER (K. Pope) improved onto the heels of LOZENGE (M. Heagney) and had to be steadied.

Stewards questioned jockey E. Wilkinson regarding the riding tactics adopted on FIRST LIEUTENANT, in particular his reason for improving forward in a 3 wide position leaving the 1400m. He stated that in his opinion the filly had previously had a tendency to overrace and he was concerned that he may be required to overly restrain FIRST LIEUTENANT in taking up a position behind the leaders. He therefore elected, as a result of the steady pace at that point of the race, to allow his mount to stride forward in order to take up the position outside the leader. Jockey Wilkinson further added that after making this decision, he was forced to make more use of FIRST LIEUTENANT than he had anticipated as a result of GOLDEN GLIMPSE also striding forward at that point of the race.

A post-race veterinary examination of YWERA revealed the horse to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer R. Bradshaw was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the gelding and must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Race 2: Hot 91 4yo & Up Maiden H'cap - 1000m
1st – Cold Tap 2nd – Moon Lady 3rd – Tudor Arcade 4th – Billy

On return to scale a protest was lodged by K. Pope, rider of the 4th placegetter, TUDOR ARCADE, against BILLY (M. Hellyer) being declared 2nd, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the riders concerned, stewards found that approaching the 50m BILLY shifted out, making heavy contact with TUDOR ARCADE, resulting in K. Pope having to stop riding his mount and shift wider on the track. Stewards further ascertained that just prior to the finish of the race, BILLY shifted out, further hampering TUDOR ARCADE, which was forced wider on the track. In all the circumstances, and taking into account the half length margin between both runners, stewards were of the opinion that the protest be upheld, with the Judge’s placings being amended to read: No. 5 – COLD TAP – 1st No. 9 – MOON LADY – 2nd No. 11 – TUDOR ARCADE – 3rd No. 1 – BILLY – 4th. At a subsequent inquiry stewards reprimanded apprentice M. Hellyer regarding this incident.

DIAMOND SUPRE (M. O’Brien) was tightened for room at the start between TUDOR ARCADE (K. Pope) and HE’S MAGICAL (J. Piper), which shifted in.

Shortly after the start, TUDOR ARCADE (K. Pope) had to be steadied when tightened for room between FLOSS ‘N’ BOOTS (S. Kennedy) and HE’S MAGICAL, which shifted in.

J. Piper, rider of HE’S MAGICAL, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the 900m she failed to stop riding her mount when it was inclined to lay in, which resulted in MOON LADY (J. Bates) being tightened for room and having to be checked. As a result of this incident, BILLY (M. Hellyer), which was racing to the inside of MOON LADY, was also hampered. J. Piper was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 10 July, and to expire at midnight, 24 July 2009.

Apprentice M. Hellyer, rider of BILLY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that shortly after entering the straight he allowed his mount to shift out under pressure and failed to stop riding and straighten his mount , which resulted in COLD TAP having its running taken and jockey S. Apthorpe having to check to avoid the heels of BILLY. M. Hellyer was suspended from riding in races for a period 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 8 July and to expire at midnight, 17 July 2009.

Race 3: Sky Channel QTIS Maiden 3yo Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Reizarb 2nd – Zofa 3rd – Baby Rock 4th – Eye Seen

Approaching the 700m, BABY ROCK (M. Palmer) and LES LOLA (M. Hellyer) were both hampered as a result of BALBOA STAR being taken out by EYE SEEN (N. Seymour), which shifted out away from ZOFA (B. Pengelly), which in turn shifted out away from REIZARB (J. Piper), when that colt also shifted outwards.

BALBOA STAR (E. Wilkinson) and BABY ROCK (M. Palmer) and EYE SEEN (N. Seymour) raced wide for the majority of the event.

A post-race veterinary examination of BLARE, which tailed off, revealed the horse had pulled up lame in the near foreleg. Trainer T. Wolfgram would be required to provide a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.

Race 5: XXXX Class 2 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Duke Ivor 2nd – Lucky Lauren 3rd – High Dee 4th – Del Tarara

LUCKY LAUREN (J. Bates) and MAGIC ROCKER (E. Wilkinson) was slow to begin, and were hampered shortly after between BROSNAN’S GOLD (P. Wolfgram), which shifted out, and HIGH DEE (M. Radecker).

LUCKY LAUREN was held up and unable to improve between the 550m and 400m.

DELTARARA (M. Hughes) was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages, resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten.

HIGH DEE raced wide throughout.

A post-race veterinary examination of BROSNAN’S GOLD, which tailed off, failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer R. Coveney was advised that the gelding’s nomination would be refused at TAB venues until it establishes form at non TAB tracks.

The veterinary surgeon also reported that ASITUATION had pulled up lame in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Bradshaw was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for ASITUATION prior to its next race start.

Race 6: Yalumba Class 4 H'cap - 1800m
1st – Bald Eagle 2nd – Paralegal 3rd – Optics 4th – Raining Kings

THREE TENORS (S. Apthorpe), which was slow to begin, then overraced during the early stages.

PARALEGAL (J. Piper) raced wide for the majority of the event.

THREE TENORS was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

When questioned regarding the performance of ROSE WITH ATTITUDE, D. Craven reported that, in his opinion, the horse failed to handle today’s track conditions. He was of the opinion that the horse did travel well until asked for an effort approaching the 600m, however the mare failed to respond to his riding. The explanation was noted.
A post-race veterinary examination of ROSE WITH ATTITUDE, which tailed off, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of BALD EAGLE, trainer’s representative Ms L. Smith attributed today’s improved performance to the gear change of blinkers off. Miss Smith further stated that this change was effected due to the stable’s opinion that the horse’s poor performance last start could be attributed to the adding of blinkers for the first time. The explanation was noted.

Race 7: Caloundra RSL Class 6 H'cap - 1400m
1st –Cole Trickle 2nd – Mauries Pick 3rd – Intramuros 4th – Fools Rush In

BURMAK (S. Apthorpe) and ETON HALL (B. Thomson) were slow to begin.

When questioned regarding the performance of ETON HALL, B. Thomson stated that whilst the horse performs better over longer distance race races. She added that the gelding at no stage felt comfortable in the prevailing track conditions, and that EATON HALL races better on firmer tracks.
