Apprentice jockey B. Looker was fined $100 for failing to produce a letter of authority from his master.

Race 1: Seapointe Homes Maiden H'cap - 1600m
1st – Sir Grahame 2nd –Unpaid 3rd – Bittermagic 4th - Sangraal

SIR GRAHAME (C. Munce) was fractious in the barriers prior to the start.

As the start was effected, MAGIC OF THUNDER (B. El-Issa) reared and lost considerable ground. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that an official warning would be placed on MAGIC OF THUNDER regarding its barrier manners.

EMPEZAR (N. Thomas) began awkwardly and shifted out.

LITTLE ROSIE (C. Priest) and NIGHT SHADOW (B. Looker) were slow to begin.

DANZI PEARL (M. Palmer) and MAGIC OF THUNDER (B. El-Issa) both raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Near the 150m, DANZI PEARL (M. Palmer) had difficulty obtaining clear running to the inside of GRANITE KING (K. Pope) and shifted out around the heels of that horse in order to improve.

Approaching the 100m, NIGHT SHADOW (B. Looker) was disappointed for a run between LIGHTS IMAGE (M. Hellyer) and DANZI PEARL (M. Palmer), both of which shifted ground.

LITTLE ROSIE (C. Priest) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

N. Thomas, rider of EMPEZAR, reported that due to his wide barrier and the slow tempo of the race during the early stages he was obliged to take up a more forward position on EMPEZAR as compared to his normal racing pattern. He also reported that he dropped his whip leaving the 200m.

Post race veterinary examinations of REACTIVE LADY and SANGRAAL revealed both horses had bled from both nostrils during the event. Connections of REACTIVE LADY and SANGRAAL were advised that both horses would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.

Race 2: Trevor Miller Racing Stables QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate – 1200m
1st – Forest Doll 2nd – Certezza 3rd – Shady Deal 4th – Lines Of Time

As E. Wilkinson failed to arrive on course, P. Hammersley was substituted as the rider of REGAL MARINER. At a subsequent inquiry E. Wilkinson was reprimanded after it was ascertained that his absence was due to a miscommunication with his manager.

REGAL MARINER (P. Hammersley) and NOTATE (I. Coombes) bumped on jumping away.

Near the 900m, VISONA ROSE (B. El-Issa) and REGAL MARINER (P. Hammersley) were both tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing to the inside of LINES OF TIME (J. Taylor), which shifted in slightly when being restrained. SHADY DEAL (L. Deguara), which was following, was also hampered as a consequence. J. Taylor, rider of LINES OF TIME, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

WITHOUT REPROACH (D. Craven) raced wide throughout.

GYPSY ROCK (C. Munce) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.

When questioned regarding the performance of GYPSY ROCK, C. Munce stated that the horse travelled well in a position 3 wide with cover and passing the 400m when asked for an effort it did respond to his riding but weakened on its run from a point approaching the 100m. C. Munce added that, in his opinion, the horse would benefit with racing experience and he was not completely dissatisfied with the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of GYPSY ROCK failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 3: Stanley River Thoroughbreds Maiden H'cap – 1200m
1st – Upper Class 2nd – Yamacutta 3rd – Ripley Glen 4th – Our Daisy Lane

The explanation tendered by trainer G. Hardy for the late declaration of E. Kehoe as the rider of DUSTY WISH was accepted.

OUR SECRET AFFAIR (M. Morris) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start, RIGHT BID (J. Taylor) raced in restricted room to the inside of OUR DAISY LANE (P. Hammersley) and was steadied.

Near the 800m, TORQUAY’S TIARA (K. Sawyers) commenced to overrace and improved up on to the heels of YAMACUTTA (M. Heagney) and was steadied.

Passing the 600m, OUR SECRET AFFAIR (M. Morris) improved up on to the heels of TORQUAY’S TIARA (K. Sawyers) and was steadied. TORQUAY’S TIARA continued to overrace for a short distance thereafter.

Approaching the 200m, OUR DAISY LANE shifted in abruptly, making heavy contact with the hind quarters of RIPLEY GLEN (C. Munce), resulting in RIPLEY GLEN becoming unbalanced.

PRIUS (B. Looker) and EDDIE (T. Huxham) raced wide throughout.

M. Heagney, rider of YAMACUTTA, was reprimanded for raising his whip arm above his shoulder.

Race 4: Coastal Effect Rendering Open H'cap – 1400m
1st – In Rehearsal 2nd – Craiglea Falcon 3rd – Adavale Hornet 4th - Tariki

A pre-race veterinary examination of ADAVALE HORNET cleared the gelding to race.

Stewards questioned I. Coombes in respect of his riding of TARIKI from a point passing the 600m where it appeared he used little vigour on the horse. I. Coombes stated that he had been instructed to be positive on TARIKI in the early stages and endeavour to take a close up position as the horse is a stayer resuming after a long spell, adding that he was concerned that it would not be able to sprint when the pace increased in the latter stages of the race. I. Coombes added that whilst TARIKI travelled comfortably in a rearward position during the early stages, when the pace increased leaving the 600m, TARIKI felt somewhat awkward in its action and lost ground from the back of CRAIGLEA FALCON. I. Coombes further stated that his lack of vigour in the straight was due to concerns he harboured in respect of the horse’s action when asked to improve rounding the home turn. Trainer R. Bradshaw confirmed the instructions and stated that the horse is one-paced and obviously better suited over longer distances than of today’s event. In the circumstances, stewards ordered that TARIKI must trial to the stewards’ satisfaction, and a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to its next race start.

IN REHEARSAL lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 5: Placemat (Kitchenware) Class 2 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Baby Boom 2nd – Folichonne 3rd – Big Tony 4th – Dance At Midnight

FOLICHONNE (D. Browne) was fractious in the barriers.

DANCE AT MIDNIGHT (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

FOLICHONNE raced wide throughout.

Race 6: JLP Fabrication Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Comzelita 2nd – Danangel 3rd – Al Chicago 4th – Heavens Own

IMPACTOR was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 8.15 am.

Prior to the race, connections advised stewards that KRATOS would be ridden in a more forward manner today. The horse was subsequently ridden accordingly.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by B. Wallace, rider of the 4th placegetter, HEAVENS OWN, against AL CHICAGO being declared the third placegetter and COMZELITA being declared the winner, alleging interference at a point near the 200m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol films, and from the stewards’ live observations of the race, stewards found at a point near the 200m, COMZELITA shifted out when insufficiently clear of STRICTLY FLAMENCO (M. Radecker), which in turn forced AL CHICAGO (M. Cahill) outwards, resulting in HEAVENS OWN having to be checked to avoid the heels of AL CHICAGO. In assessing the objection against the 3rd placegetter, AL CHICAGO, stewards believed that the incident was brought about by indirect interference suffered by AL CHICAGO and therefore dismissed the objection. In relation to the objection against the winner, COMZELITA, bearing in mind where the incident occurred and the interference sustained by HEAVENS OWN, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the incident not taken place that HEAVENS OWN would have beaten COMZELITA and therefore dismissed the objection and the Judge’s placings were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, J. Holder, rider of COMZELITA, was severely reprimanded for riding in a careless manner and advised to ensure that in similar circumstances he stops riding and straightens his mount sooner than he did on this occasion.

HEAVENS OWN (B. Wallace) was slow to begin.

Rounding the home turn, DANANGEL (D. Griffin) was held up for clear running for a short distance when awkwardly placed on the heels of ABBAJAZZ (K. Pope).

AL CHICAGO (M. Cahill) and CRAIGLEA FIGHTER (K. Sawyers) raced wide throughout.

Race 7: Contour Consulting Engineers Class 4 H'cap – 1400m
1st –Harney 2nd –Primeval Demand 3rd – Lucky Omens 4th – Coroner

SCONANDTINK (J. Holder) and ARDMILAN (C. Priest) bumped on jumping away.

LUCKY OMENS (B. Stewart) overraced during the early stages of the race.

At a point near the 500m, CORONER (C. Munce) was momentarily held up for clear running, and leaving the 300m was disappointed for a run between HARNEY (M. Cahill) and SCONANDTINK (J. Holder), which shifted out slightly. In this incident, CORONER bumped the hind quarters of HARNEY, resulting in CORONER becoming unbalanced.

LUCKY OMENS, CASH IN A HURRY (E. Wilkinson) and LEICA LION (M. Heagney) all raced wide throughout the event.

Race 8: Programmed Property Services Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Shadow Buster 2nd – Beautiful 3rd – Chicken Dinner 4th – Kingo

CRAIGELLACHIE was declared a late scratching at 8.30 am. Trainer K. Doughty will be interviewed regarding this matter a date and time to be fixed.

As D. Craven was ill, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of FLY TO RIO.

CLANG DE VERE (B. Looker) and COUNT IGLESIA (M. Palmer) were slow to begin.

SHADOW BUSTER (D. Browne) shifted out at the start and bumped MARAETAI (P. Hammersley).

IDLE RICH (M. Hellyer) was slow into stride.

Approaching the 800m turn, CLANG DE VERE (B. Looker) commenced to hang out and had to be checked across the heels of BEAUTIFUL (R. McMahon). A short distance later, CLANG DE VERE commenced to overrace.

Near the 250m, MARAETAI and BEAUTIFUL were held up when attempting to take a run between FLY TO RIO (J. Byrne) and KRATOS (B. El-ssa), which commenced to weaken at that point. As a consequence, BEAUTIFUL was obliged to shift out abruptly in order to improve.

LOVE THAT CHICK (M. Morris) and CHICKEN DINNER (M. Radecker) raced wide throughout.

B. Wallace, rider of GOLDEN SUCCESS, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.

Stewards sought an explanation from P. Hammersley regarding the performance of MARAETAI. P. Hammersley stated that the horse settled and traveled well in the early and middle stages, however despite having difficulty obtaining clear running near the 250m, MARAETAI proved disappointing under his riding over the concluding stages. P. Hammersley advised that connections had indicated to him that they would now step MARAETAI up in distance and endeavour to take up a more prominent position in its races.

SHADOW BUSTER lost its off hind plate in running.
