From Eagle Farm, 31.8.11

Race 6. Trainer M. Mair reported that he was disappointed with the performance of EVENING VISION and indicated that it would now be his intention to recommend to connections that the mare be retired to stud.

Race 7. Trainer B. Guy reported that PIXIU had pulled up well and the only tangible explanation he could offer for the disappointing performance was that the gelding may not have handled the prevailing track conditions. He added that he would now look to start PIXIU on firmer tracks.

Race 1: Bundy Up Maiden H'cap - 1000m
1st – Jewel Of Cashel 2nd – Tacker 3rd – opportunity’s Choice 4th – St Qualo

Connections advised that TACKER would be ridden in a midfield position today in an effort to have the gelding settle better after overracing when leading last start. The horse was ridden accordingly.

The start of this race was delayed after a section of the running rail at a point near the 300m needed to be repaired.

The start was further delayed when BOOTS ‘N’ JEANS became cast in the barriers. After being examined by the veterinary surgeon, BOOTS ‘N’ JEANS was cleared to take its place in the field.

BREEANTE (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.

PAR FOR THE COURSE (C. Priest) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

BOOTS ‘N’ JEANS (M. Hughes) blundered shortly after the start.

TACKER (A. Pattillo) overraced and laid in whilst being restrained to take up a trailing position during the early stages.

Leaving the 400m, POP’S CHOICE (C. Munce) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with FAIRGLASE (D. McWhinney), forcing that horse wider on the track.

TACKER had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.

FAIRGLASE and DOROTHY (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout.

J. Hoopert, rider of ST QUALO, was reprimanded for using his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m.

Race 2: Bundy Red Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1000m
1st – County Sherrif 2nd – Fasdehere 3rd – Allervite 4th – Monashee Dancer

Trainers R. Knill (FASDEHERE) and H. Richardson (CATTLEMAN) were reprimanded for presenting their runners late to the enclosure.

TORNADOES (E. Wilkinson) and JUST ABOUT READY (C. Munce) were both tightened for room and lost ground at the start between COUNTY SHERRIF (K. Wharton), which shifted in and became unbalanced, and CATTLEMAN (M. O'Brien), which shifted out.

ALLERVITE (M. Hellyer) and FASDEHERE (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.

Following this event, the track rating was upgraded to Slow 6.

Race 3: Bundy Five F&M Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Sheer Echelon 2nd – Visona Rose 3rd – She’s Candy 4th – Little Brown Horse

CAILYNS LEGEND (K. Gates) shifted out at the start, hampering both BOOROCKA (M. Hellyer) and NOT A LADY (T. Huxham).

MISS ELMO (A. Kitson) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 900m, CARRY THAT WEIGHT (C. Munce), which was inclined to overrace, was forced to steady from the heels of SHEER ECHELON (J. Taylor), which shifted in.

Leaving the 400m, LITTLE BROWN HORSE (J. Byrne) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made heavy contact with MISS ELMO. J. Byrne, rider of LITTLE BROWN HORSE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

CAILYNS LEGEND (K. Gates), SHE’S CANDY (R. McMahon) and MISS ELMO (A. Kitson) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Kitson regarding the tactics adopted on MISS ELMO, in that she positioned the horse in the second half of the field which was in contrast to the mare’s most recent starts. Miss Kitson stated she had been instructed to obtain a forward position, however the mare did not begin as well as expected and as a result she felt she would be caught wide without cover if she urged her mount forward, and she therefore elected to restrain and this enabled her to obtain a position although wide with cover. Stewards noted the explanation.

A post-race veterinary examination of CAILYNS LEGEND, which tailed off, revealed the horse to be showing signs of mild soreness in the near fore.

Race 4: Bundy 100 Poof QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1200m
1st – Venture On 2nd – Kahui 3rd – In A Storm 4th – Craiglea Hussy

SO DOMINANT (E. Wilkinson) jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground.

At the start, VENTURE ON (R. McMahon) was tightened for room and lost ground after beginning awkwardly between DAZZLING KIND (J. Byrne) and NOT A DULL MOMENT (M. Hughes), which was taken out by KAHUI (J. Stanley), which shifted out after beginning awkwardly.

CRAIGLEA ROMEO (J. Kropp) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with the barrier partition.

When the pace slackened leaving the 900m, DAZZLING KIND overraced at the heels of SANTA MAURA (C. Munce) for a short distance.

Leaving the 600m, SO DOMINANT had to be steadied when racing between CRAIGLEA ROMEO and VENTURE ON, which shifted out to improve.

SO DOMINANT, CRAIGLEA ROMEO and CRAIGLEA HUSSY (K. Wharton) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the below-market performance of SANTA MAURA. C. Munce advised he was at a loss to explain the poor performance, advising that after beginning well and obtaining a favourable position, SANTA MAURA failed to run on as expected when placed under pressure near the 400m. Trainer’s representative Mr Russell Booth confirmed the stables’ disappointment in the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SANTA MAURA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities other than the filly had lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 5: Bundy Reserve CG&E Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Newland Warrior 2nd – Munster Province 3rd –Diamond Ace 4th – Warrant

PINCH HITTER (A. Spinks) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with OURMANINAMSTERDAM (P. Keane), which also jumped away awkwardly.

OURMANINAMSTERDAM, which raced greenly during the early stages, shifted out leaving the 1100m, hampering both LONE HEART (J. Byrne) and COUNT ROMANO (M. Hellyer).

DIAMOND ACE (C. Priest) and INTHANON (K. Forrester) raced wide throughout.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (E. Wilkinson) bled from both nostrils during the event. Connections were advised that PINEAPPLE EXPRESS would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey D. Griffin regarding the below-market expectation performance of SECRET MEETING. D. Griffin stated that the gelding was marginally slow to begin and this caused him to be positioned further back in the field than he had anticipated. He added that the horse travelled well with a favourable run, however when placed under pressure rounding the home turn, in his opinion, SECRET MEETING commenced to race greenly and proved disappointing in the run to the finish. Trainer D. Bell confirmed his disappointment in the performance, and given that this was the gelding’s first start wearing blinkers, would now consider removing this piece of gear prior to its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of SECRET MEETING revealed a minor laceration to the off hind pastern.

Stewards afforded J. Byrne the opportunity to comment on the performance of LONE HEART. Jockey Byrne stated that after beginning well, the gelding was unable to muster early speed and as a result he elected to take up a trailing position in the second half of the field. He added that LONE HEART had a tendency to lay in throughout the event and he was forced to pressure the horse after leaving the 600m to improve into the race. J. Byrne further stated that, in his opinion, the horse would be more suited to races over more ground as the horse was doing its best work in the latter stages of the event.

Race 6: The Bundaberg Distilling Company Class 3 H'cap – 2200m
1st – Connacht 2nd – Eleven Oysters 3rd – Bittermagic 4th – Enterprise Star

The start of this race was delayed when ENTERPRISE STAR became fractious in the barriers and had to be examined by the veterinary surgeon before being cleared to take its place in the field.

Approaching the 600m, GRIEG (A. Spinks) shifted out in an attempt to improve and in doing so made contact with the hind quarters of FANTASTIC CARAT (J. Hoopert) and as a result became unbalanced. GREIG was then held up for clear running and had to be checked from the heels of the tiring FAENZA (E. Wilkinson) at a point near the 500m.

Nearing the 400m, SON OF BENNY (K. Fujii) improved onto the heels of the tiring FAENZA and shifted out, making heavy contact with GREIG, causing both horses to become unbalanced.

BAIL ME OUT (J. Stanley) was force to race wide throughout.

Stewards afforded apprentice M. Hellyer the opportunity to comment on the performance of ELEVEN OYSTERS. M. Hellyer stated that he had been instructed to try to have the horse positioned more forward if possible, however ELEVEN OYSTERS did not muster early speed despite his vigorous riding and he was forced to position the mare at the tail of the field. He added that at a point approaching the 700m he was positioned behind SANCY DIAMOND (K. Wharton) which, in his opinion, was under pressure at that stage. As a result of this, and being mindful of the fact that ELEVEN OYSTERS does not muster speed quickly, he elected to shift wider on the track and ride vigorously to improve into the race. Given the circumstances, M. Hellyer was pleased with the overall performance.

Stewards sought an explanation from E. Wilkinson regarding the below-market expectation performance of FAENZA. E. Wilkinson stated that the horse travelled well until he was forced to place pressure on the mare from the 800m to remain in the lead, and then commenced to yield ground from the 600m. It was his assessment that FAENZA did not run out a strong 2200m. Stable representative Mr J. Britnell confirmed the stable’s disappointment, adding that in light of today’s performance, consideration would be given to retiring FAENZA. A post-race veterinary examination of FAENZA, revealed the horse to have a poor post-race recovery.

A post-race veterinary examination of SON OF BENNY revealed the gelding to have a laceration to the near fore fetlock.

Race 7: Bundy Bear Class 4 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Hangover Henry 2nd – Kenny’s Magic 3rd – Disputed Bid 4th – Lilly Of The Field

Stewards accepted the explanation from connections for the late declaration of rider for HANGOVER HENRY.

IVY’S LEAGUE (R. Wiggins) and MAROON BELLS (G. Killen) were both slow to begin.

MEDIUS (C. Priest) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1100m, both DISPUTED BID (E. Wilkinson) and CORONER (J. Taylor) were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of LILLY OF THE FIELD (N. Thomas), which shifted in. N. Thomas, rider of LILLY OF THE FIELD, was advised to exercise more care.

CORONER (J. Taylor) overraced in the middle stages and at a point near the 800m had to be steadied away from the heels of LILLY OF THE FIELD.

Approaching the 200m, IT’S WUNDERBAR (R. Hancock) was disappointed for a run to the inside of MEDIUS (C. Priest) and as a result had to be steadied and shift out across the heels of that runner.

HANGOVER HENRY (P. Schmidt) laid in under pressure over the final 200m, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten on a number of occasions.

HANGOVER HENRY and CORONER raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards questioned R. Wiggins and stable representative J. Bretnell regarding the performance of IVY’S LEAGUE, which after being slow to begin trailed the field throughout the event and took no competitive part. R. Wiggins stated that he was forced to pressure the horse throughout the event and could offer no explanation for the performance. Stewards advised Mr Bretnell that in light of today’s performance, the gelding would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of IVY’S LEAGUE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the overall performance and the tactics adopted on LADY SELENE, in particular the reasons for leading in today’s event which was in contrast to its most recent pattern of racing. C. Munce stated that he had been instructed not to necessarily lead but to take up forward position. He added that he was disappointed with the overall performance as after travelling well, was under pressure when rounding the home turn and failed to run on. Trainer’s representative Mr R. Booth confirmed the instructions, adding that in light of today’s performance the mare would now be sent for a spell. Stewards reminded Mr Booth of his obligations as a stable representative to advise stewards of any alteration to riding tactics.
