As C. Munce was ill and S. Galloway was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: DEAGON TRAINERS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Concrete Lady 2nd – Lava Corona 3rd – Novaspur 4th – Cathay Lady
Trainer A. Williamson was fined $100 for presenting LAVA CORONA (M. Vance) to race with the off hind bandage incorrectly applied.
The start of this race was delayed due to a malfunction with the starting mechanism on the barriers, following which the horses were removed from the barriers and cleared by the veterinary surgeon to take their places in the field. Prior to the horses being reloaded, the barriers were tested on two occasions without failure, after which the horses were loaded and the start effected.
Near the 750m NOVASPUR (E. Wilkinson) had to be eased when tightened for room between MARCULOO (J. Byrne) and FEELIN' FEISTY (M. Gray), which shifted in. M. Gray was advised to exercise more care.
Near the 100m NOVASPUR shifted out under pressure and in doing so inconvenienced MARCULOO. CATHAY LADY (D. Browne), which was improving to the outside of MARCULOO, was also momentarily inconvenienced.
When questioned regarding the performance of CATHAY LADY, jockey Browne advised that he was instructed to ride the filly with cover. He stated that after beginning fairly CATHAY LADY failed to muster the required speed in the early stages despite his efforts to take up a midfield position and as such he was obliged to restrain and take cover towards the rear of the field. D. Browne added that from that position he was obliged to shift out off the rail to obtain clear running rounding the home turn and in the straight, at which point the filly finished the race off fairly. Jockey Browne was of the view that the racing surface off the fence was inferior, which prevented CATHAY LADY from finishing the race off better. He added that CATHAY LADY’s form suggested that the horse preferred racing over further ground than that of today’s event. Stewards, whilst satisfied with jockey Browne’s explanation, advised him that in their view he could have persisted for longer during the early stages in pressuring the horse in attempting to secure a more forward position.
Race 2: CBM MAIDEN PLATE - 1600m
1st – Sniper’s Shot 2nd – Sundae Dreamin’ 3rd – Excalibre 4th – Duelling Goddess
DUELLING GODDESS (G. Lynch) was slow to begin.
OCTAVAR (G. Goold) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped GOODHORSEHYMN (A. Spinks).
KOUNISTRA (B. Richardson) began awkwardly.
GOODHORSEHYMN hung out rounding the first turn near the 1400m and in doing so bumped MORINGA’S SUNDANCE (D. McWhinney).
MORINGA’S SUNDANCE raced wide throughout.
SCARLET WITCH (K. Wharton) and OCTAVAR overraced in the early stages.
Leaving the 400m SCARLET WITCH (K. Wharton) shifted out to improve to the outside of OCTAVAR and in doing so inconvenienced KNIGHTS (R. Mason).
Apprentice G. Goold (OCTAVAR) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
SNIPER'S SHOT (L. Cassidy) lost its near fore plate in running.
Stewards questioned jockey L. Cassidy regarding the tactics adopted on SNIPER'S SHOT, in particular his reasons for leading in today’s event, which was in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Jockey Cassidy stated that he had not been instructed to lead, however after travelling a short distance he elected to allow the mare to stride forward and assume that position in order to obtain running closer to the fence. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 3: BREATHING TREE YOGA MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Raven Raider 2nd – Farmerwantsawife 3rd – Get Up Grandma 4th – The Blizzard
The start was delayed when ME AND MR JONES (G. Cooksley) proved difficult to load. Trainer B. Guy was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners.
SUMMER LUSCIOUS (L. Finlay), PASILLA (J. Byrne) and COOLPAPA (D. Browne) were all slow to begin.
FARMERWANTSAWIFE (E. Wilkinson) and DANA’S WOOD (A. Spinks) bumped upon jumping.
GET ON (B. Derbyshire) and FLYING WEAPON (G. Goold) raced wide throughout.
COOLPAPA was held up for a short distance leaving the 500m.
FARMERWANTSAWIFE was held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.
GET UP GRANDMA (D. Green) was held up rounding the home turn.
Near the 350m GET UP GRANDMA shifted out to improve to the outside of RAVEN RAIDER (L. Cassidy) and in doing so inconvenienced ME AND MR JONES, GET ON and DECENT CHOICE (R. McMahon).
GET ON hung in under pressure in the home straight.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on GET ON particluarly in the early and middle stages when racing three wide outside the leaders Apprentice B. Derbyshire stated that she was specifically instructed to obtain the lead. App Derbyshire added that when caught wide in the early stages she continued to pressure the filly in an attempt to comply with her instructions. Stewards advised App. Derbyshire that she should have shown greater initiative when realising she was not able to cross those runners to her inside by easing near the 800m in an attempt to obtain cover instead of continuing to apply pressure to GET ON at that point of the race.
Race 4: GILLY UP CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Waranga 2nd – Sweet And Vicious 3rd – Shadowofexcellence 4th – Herecomesthetiger
Trainer R. Bradshaw was reprimanded for declaring K. Wharton as the rider of HONOURDO when he had been engaged as the rider of NORTHERNER. M. Hellyer was subsequently declared as the rider of HONOURDO.
The start of this race was initially delayed due to the running of an interstate event, and further delayed when SWEET AND VICIOUS (R. Hurdle) became fractious in the barriers and dislodged its rider. SWEET AND VICIOUS was removed from the barriers and after being examined by the veterinary surgeon was cleared to take its place in the field.
CLONMACNOISE (R. Mason) and CARTIER BELLE (L. Dillon) came together at the start.
CARTIER BELLE and HONOURDO (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 700m CLONMACNOISE improved on to the heels of SHADOWOFEXCELLENCE and was steadied.
The saddle on SWEET AND VICIOUS began to shift to the nearside at a point leaving the 600m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event, placing its rider at a disadvantage.
CLONMACNOISE was held up rounding the home turn.
On straightening, WARANGA (K. Matheson) was momentarily held up when attempting to improve to the outside of LADY FLEMING (J. Stanley). As a consequence, HERECOMESTHETIGER (G. Lynch), which was following, was also momentarily held up.
Leaving the 400m WILD RUMOURS (M. Vance) shifted out to improve and in doing so hampered SWEET AND VICIOUS, which was taken out on to CARTIER BELLE and HONOURDO, which was also inconvenienced. Apprentice M. Vance was reprimanded.
Leaving the 200m CLONMACNOISE was disappointed for a run between LADY FLEMING and HERECOMESTHETIGER, had to be checked and as a consequence was held up until a point leaving the 100m. When questioned as to why she allowed CLONMACNOISE to improve to the inside of HERECOMESTHETIGER rather than shifting to the outside of that runner earlier in the straight, jockey R. Mason stated that she observed HERECOMESTHETIGER was inclined to shift ground and as such she believed there may be room to improve to the inside of that runner, however when HERECOMESTHETIGER failed to shift out, she was disappointed for that run. Stewards advised jockey Mason that she would have been better served to shift to the outside of HERECOMESTHETIGER earlier in the straight to afford her mount every opportunity to secure clear running.
On return to scale apprentice A. Allen reported that SHADOWOFEXCELLENCE resented the tongue tie and as a result was reluctant to improve between runners leaving the 200m and again over the concluding stages.
When questioned as to why RAINS settled further back in the field today in contrast to its customary racing pattern, apprentice P. Keane stated that after beginning only fairly the gelding failed to muster the necessary speed in the early stages despite his urgings and as a result he was obliged to restrain to a rearward position.
Race 5: PAT DUFF RACING STABLES QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Tuskegee Hawk 2nd – Collector 3rd – Defenceman 4th – Keep Winning
Shortly after the start NOBLE JESTER (A. Badger) was tightened for room between DEFENCEMAN (R. Hurdle) and MORE DUST (E. Wilkinson) and lost ground.
SUBSEQUENT (G. Cooksley) overraced in the early stages.
COLLECTOR (K. Wharton) raced wide in the early stages.
CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (A. Spinks) raced wide in the early and middle stages.
MORE DUST and CARLSON'S FELT (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
WISHMORE (M. Vance) was momentarily held up upon straightening.
NOBLE JESTER had difficulty obtaining clear running to the inside of SUBSEQUENT for the majority of the home straight and near the 200m and again near the 100m had to be steadied when forced to race in restricted room to the inside of SUBSEQUENT.
When questioned as to whether or not there was an opportunity to shift wider on the track leaving the 500m to improve into the event, jockey J. Stanley stated that he was specifically instructed to position DENWOOD close to the rails and to ride for luck, bearing in mind today’s pattern of racing. Jockey Stanley added that upon straightening he was able to obtain clear running and he began to improve into the race, however at a point leaving the 200m he became held up and was unable to shift out to improve to the outside of KEEP WINNING (D. Browne) due to ST SULLY (J. Byrne) improving to his outside. As a consequence, DENWOOD went to the line without being fully tested. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 6: BRISBANE INJURY LAWYERS BASH CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – One To Go 2nd – Little White Horse 3rd – Rhapsodic 4th – Teleboy
A pre-race veterinary examination of SKEETER (L. Rolls), which was returning from injury and had not raced in the previous 18 months, cleared the horse to start.
Correct weight was delayed to enable apprentice P. Keane, the rider of 2nd placegetter LITTLE WHITE HORSE, the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to ascertain whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection against the winner ONE TO GO. After viewing the film, apprentice Keane indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.
TELEBOY (A. Kitson) began awkwardly.
COLONY (C. Eaton) overraced in the early stages.
SHANGHAI BUND (A. Allen) raced wide throughout.
Near the 900m ONE TO GO (T. Harrison) had to be eased and overraced for a short distance when tightened for room by LITTLE WHITE HORSE (P. Keane), which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Apprentice P. Keane was reprimanded.
Upon straightening apprentice P. Keane (LITTLE WHITE HORSE) elected to improve into a narrow run to the inside of SHADY OUTFIT (G. Lynch) and shortly thereafter SHADY OUTFIT shifted in marginally, placing both LITTLE WHITE HORSE and ONE TO GO in restricted room, resulting in both of those runners bumping for a considerable distance. Near the 200m when G. Lynch stopped riding and straightened to relieve the pressure to those two runners, RHAPSODIC (E. Wilkinson), which had attempted to improve to the outside of SHADY OUTFIT, had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of SHADY OUTFIT. G. Lynch was reprimanded for the initial tightening to LITTLE WHITE HORSE and ONE TO GO.
Apprentice P. Keane reported that LITTLE WHITE HORSE was inclined to lay out rounding the home turn, which allowed ONE TO GO to improve to his inside at that point.
Race 7: JIM MCKEERING REAL ESTATE BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Tickled 2nd – Get That Indya 3rd – Largo Da Barra 4th – Red Centurion
KNEEL AND RAISE (G. Goold) and LARGO DA BARRA (D. Browne) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m KNEEL AND RAISE improved on to the heels of LARGO DA BARRA, had to be steadied and shifted wider on the track. KNEEL AND RAISE was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.
RACE THE SHADOW (P. Hammersley) and JASMINKA (A. Allen) raced wide throughout.
Over the concluding stages JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS (J. Stanley) was forced to race in restricted room between RED CENTURION (K. Wharton) and TROMBONE ALLEY (G. Cooksley) and as a result was unable to be fully tested at that point.
Near the 50m TICKLED (J. Byrne) shifted in and bumped GET THAT INDYA (E. Wilkinson).
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of JASMINKA, apprentice A. Allen stated that from the wide barrier he was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event and this combined with the impost of the heavy weight and the prevailing track conditions had a detrimental effect on the horse’s performance.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted aboard LARGO DA BARRA rounding the home turn and in the home straight, jockey D. Browne stated that he was reluctant to shift wider on the track rounding the home turn as in his mind the going was inferior wider on the track. Jockey Browne added that upon straightening he shifted out in an attempt to improve between BANANA KICK (L. Cassidy) and RACE THE SHADOW (P. Hammersley), however RACE THE SHADOW shifted out resulting in him being again held up for a short distance near the 250m, at which point he was forced to shift in and improve to the inside of RACE THE SHADOW. Jockey Browne added that when afforded clear running over the final 200m LARGO DA BARRA finished the race off well. Stewards noted the explanation.
Following his ride in this event E. Wilkinson was stood down by the Club doctor. Jockey Wilkinson was advised that he would require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding.
Race 8: SACRED HEART SCHOOL SANDGATE BENCHMARK 75 – H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Hangover Henry 2nd – Tunahog 3rd – Tornadoes 4th – Our Mr Cashman
TY SEEKER (P. Keane) and DANEOMITE (L. Rolls) bumped at the start.
STREET SINGER (A. Kitson) and ISSUES (D. Browne) raced wide throughout.
Near the 200m DR BARNARD (A. Allen) had to be steadied when tightened for room between EXPLORE THE WORLD (J. Kropp) and STREET SINGER, which shifted out. Apprentice A. Kitson (STREET SINGER) was reminded of her obligation to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 200m DANEOMITE had to be eased when awkwardly placed at the heels of INANNA (K. Matheson). DANEWIN GIRL (J. Byrne), which was following, was momentarily held up as a consequence.
TUNAHOG (M. Vance) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
