Race 1: Down Under Cellars Maiden Plate – 1000m
1st – Solidify 2nd – Retsina 3rd – Shady Deal 4th – Keepin’ Grace

GRAND MARNIER (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 500m, WINDBORNE (K. Gates), which commenced to overrace, improved to the inside of RETSINA (J. Noonan) where there was doubtful room and was steadied as a consequence. ROYAL LAKE (N. Yamada), which was following, was inconvenienced as a consequence.

In the straight, RETSINA was held up from the 450m until approaching the 200m.
KEEPIN’ GRACE (R. Mason) raced wide throughout.

J. Noonan, rider of RETSINA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that leaving the 100m, he permitted his mount to shift out under vigorous riding when insufficiently clear of FLYING WEAPON (L. Rolls), causing that runner to be forced wider on the track. Furthermore, under hard riding he continued to shift ground outwards when insufficiently clear of KEEPIN’ GRACE (R. Mason), resulting in that runner being forced wider on the track and losing its rightful running. J. Noonan was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 5 meetings, to commence at midnight, 18 May and to expire a midnight, 27 May. In assessing penalty stewards took into account his status as an apprentice rider, and also the degree of interference involved in the incident.

Race 2: XXXX Summer Bright Maiden Plate – 1800m
1st – Denwood 2nd – Colour Code 3rd – Dark Matter 4th – Sideshow Summer

EXCALIBRE (A. Spinks) was slow to begin.

COLOUR CODE (S. Drake) was slow into stride.

CANTICLE (A. Kitson) stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground.

COLOUR CODE overraced in the early stages.

DECOOLCAT (R. Hancock) hung out rounding the first turn near the 1600m and in doing so forced CRAIGLEA CALIPSO (P. Schmidt) wider on the track.

MORINGA’S SUNDANCE (D. McWhinney) hung out approaching the 1600m, resulting in DENWOOD (C. Munce) being steadied.

R. Hancock, rider of DECOOLCAT, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of PERSIAN BOOK (G. Killen), resulting in that runner and DARK MATTER (J. Byrne), which was racing to the outside, both being tightened for room between DECOOLCAT and DENWOOD (C. Munce), resulting in J. Byrne, rider of DARK MATTER, and G. Killen, rider of PERSIAN BOOK, having to take hold of their mounts and lose their rightful positions. R. Hancock was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 20 May, and to expire at midnight, 1 June.

COLOUR CODE (S. Drake) overraced throughout.

Stewards questioned S. Drake regarding the tactics adopted on COLOUR CODE, in particular her reasons for being positioned midfield which was in contrast to the gelding’s most recent racing pattern, which is to lead. Ms Drake advised stewards she had been instructed to lead, however after being slowly away, runners to the outside crossed quickly during the early stages and she was obliged to position COLOUR CODE midfield. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 3: Victoria Bitter Benchmark 80 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Fear No Other 2nd – Heartsun 3rd – Dr Barnard 4th - Deacon

K. Wharton, rider of the winner, FEAR NO OTHER, returned to scale in excess of a kilogram over his declared riding weight. K. Wharton was fined $200.

Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Dead 4.

Race 4: Harry Brown Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – All Claudia 2nd – Stream Of Light 3rd – Shoot Through 4th – Not A Dull Moment

ALRIODANE, which became fractious in the barriers and became cast, was subsequently removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 2.39 on veterinary advice. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on ALRIODANE were ordered to be refunded with deductions applicable as follows:

5 cents in the dollar for the Win of All Claudia
7 cents in the dollar for place of winner All Claudia
6 cents in the dollar for 2nd place Stream Of Light
5 cents in the dollar for 3rd place Shoot Through

Trainer K. Munce was advised that a warning would be placed on ALRIODANE regarding its barrier manners, and he was further advised that a veterinary certificate would be required for ALRIODANE, which sustained lacerations to its near hind leg.

A further delay was caused when part of the bridle on TENACIOUS JACK broke and had to be replaced.

1st – Sam’s Town 2nd – Clangor 3rd – Ramdom Orbit 4th – Tickled

BITASILK (J. Taylor) began awkwardly.

Shortly after the start, BAIL ME OUT (C. Small) was tightened for room between MUSASHI OF MIEKO (R. Bell) and TICKLED (L. Cassidy), which shifted in.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, both LOVES A CHALLENGE (E. Wilkinson) and STEP FORWARD (W. O’Connell) raced in restricted room to the inside of MUSASHI OF MIEKO (R. Bell).

A short distance later, LOVES A CHALLENGE commenced to overrace and was continually steadied when improving up on to the heels of TICKLED.

Leaving the 600m, WHITE CITY (J. Noonan) became awkward when tightened for room to the inside of DAVE THE DUDE (K. Wharton), which was placed in restricted room by WINMARA (S. Galloway), which shifted in.

Following the race, E. Wilkinson reported that LOVES A CHALLENGE hung out throughout the race, placing him at a disadvantage.

A post-race veterinary examination of WINMARA, which raced below market expectations, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer F. Phillips advised that in light of today’s performance, WINMARA would be sent for a short break from racing.

Race 6: Bottlemart Class 2 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Broadcast 2nd – Mr Tracey 3rd – Skeeter 4th – Zamboni

SKEETER (L. Rolls) began awkwardly.

ANDTHEBANDPLAYDON (K. Wharton) overraced during the early stages.

NOVASPUR had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance entering the straight.

A veterinary examination of VOODOO BLACK MAGIC cleared the horse to race. DRIVING HEART and EPIC TERRA, which were in the adjacent barriers, were also examined by the veterinary surgeon at the start and cleared to race.

CURRAWEE LASS (N. Yamada) was slow to begin.

DANISH WHISKEY (D. Browne), which was a little slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between GOTTA BE LUCKY (K. Gates) and SUITE HEAVENS (M. Hellyer), which shifted in.

EPIC TERRA (S. Payne) was held up for clear running from the 400m until near the 250m, at which stage it was able to gain clear running to the inside of RAVEN RAIDER (L. Cassidy).

EXCELLENT DANE (J. Byrne) and EXQUISITE ANGEL (K. Wharton) bumped near the 50m.

JAYDEN AND YOU (C. Munce), STRIP SHOW (M. Cahill) and DRIVING HEART (G. Killen) raced wide throughout.
