Race 8. Trainer J. McMahon reported that PHELAN READY, despite having suffered from heat stress immediately following the event, was showing no ill effects from the run upon inspection this morning, and at this stage it would be his intention to continue with its current preparation.

From GCTC, 18.5.13

Apprentice M. McKenzie, rider of CLASSIC KITTEN, was fined the sum of $200 for excessive use of the whip in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.

Race 1: Number One Qulaity Homes Maiden H'cap - 1000m

Prior to correct weight being declared, jockey M. Morris made application to stewards for CRAIGLEA ART, which was significantly slow to begin, to be declared a non runner. After taking evidence from M. Morris, Mr T. Miller, trainer of CRAIGLEA ART, starter J. Holcombe and assistant starter P. Briton, stewards were satisfied that whilst the start had been effected by J. Holcombe, there had been a delay with the mechanism, causing CRAIGLEA ART to rear and become encumbered with its near fore leg caught on the barrier partition. Further evidence was taken from all other riders in the event and whilst stewards were satisfied that the start had been effected correctly and all other runners had been afforded a fair start, it was deemed that CRAIGLEA ART was denied a fair start and as such was declared a non runner at 12.36 pm, with the following deductions applicable.

2 cents in the dollar for the Win #1
2 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1
9 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #8
7 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #4

CHIPPY’S MATE (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly and had to be steadied away from the heels of GLEESONATOR (M. Cahill) shortly after the start and then raced greenly throughout.

Leaving the 500m, SUNDIATA FLYER (G. Goold) shifted out in an attempt to improve into the race and in doing so made contact with ENDOY (J. Byrne), which raced wide throughout. A short distance later, both horses became unbalanced when ENDOY commenced to lay in, making further contact with SUNDIATA FLYER. ENDOY then continued to lay in for the remainder of the event, which had an effect on J. Byrne’s vigour on ENDOY over the concluding stages. J. Byrne reported that, in his opinion, ENDOY may benefit from a crossover noseband. Trainer D. Heineman advised stewards he would removed the blinkers and add a crossover noseband for the gelding’s next race start.

JACK’S SPIRIT bled during the event. As this was the second occasion on which JACK’S SPIRIT has bled, the gelding will now incur a lifetime bar from racing. AR53A

When questioned regarding the performance of SUNDIATA FLYER, apprentice G. Goold stated that the filly was under pressure approaching the home turn and failed to respond to his riding in the straight and proved disappointing. Trainer D. Hansen agreed with the comments of apprentice Goold and indicated that following the disappointing performance he would review the gelding’s current racing program.

Race 2: Blinds Awnings & Security Maiden Plate – 1400m

Following a stable inspection of trainer T. Hurley’s stables at Deagon Racecourse, it was found that PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS was stabled at this address and not in accordance with the stable return of trainer J. Lyons, and as such PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS was declared a late scratching at 10.35 am by order of the stewards acting under LR 41.

As trainer M. Mair was unable to fit the tongue-tie to BIANROSES, it was decided to attempt to fit the tongue-tie behind the barriers, however after a number of unsuccessful attempts, stewards permitted BIANROSES to race without this advertised gear.

FORT CONSTANTINE (A. Coome) was slow to begin.

MUMMULGUM (M. Gray) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 200m, ILLUMINISM (P. Schmidt), which was inclined to lay in, and RAPID COMMAND (E. Wilkinson) were both inconvenienced when tightened for room to the inside of RUN FOR EVER (R. McMahon), which shifted in under pressure. R. McMahon, rider of RUN FOR EVER, was reprimanded for this incident.

RUN FOR EVER, which bled during the event, will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.

Race 3: Nu Trend Quality Homes Benchmark 90 H'cap - 1400m

As M. Cahill was to be overweight, A. Coome was substituted as the rider of IMPALA. After taking evidence from M. Cahill, stewards recorded a reprimand against him.

SINISTER PRINCE (J. Stanley) began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping DELAGO PILLI (G. Goold).

DELAGO PILLI had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight between the 300m and 100m.

On return to scale R McMahon reported that, in his opinion, KEEP IT MOIST was not entirely comfortable in the prevailing track conditions.

Stewards afforded E. Wilkinson the opportunity to comment on the performance of MATABRAHMA. He indicated that the mare travelled comfortably and improved into the race well shortly after entering the home straight, however after passing the 300m it commenced to weaken and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. He added that MATABRAHMA was having its first start back from a spell, which may have resulted in the horse not running out a strong 1400m. A post-race veterinary examination of MATABRAHMA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer P. Jenkins indicated that in light of today’s performance he would be removing the tongue-tie from its gear and would experiment with the use of a cross-over noseband during trackwork.

Race 4: Paramount Collections QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1600m

K. Matheson was fined $200 for failing to claim his full allowance on ADVENTURE KING.

Both HEARTFELT QUEST (M. Cahill) and LONGSHAW (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

HEARTFELT QUEST overraced in the early stages.

Stewards afforded M. Cahill the opportunity to comment on the performance of HEARTFELT QUEST, which was below market expectations. M. Cahill stated that it had been his intention to position HEARTFELT QUEST in a more forward position, however after beginning very awkwardly he was forced to position the horse in the second half of the field. He added that this, along with having to make up ground in the latter half of the race against the pattern of racing on today’s surface, had a detrimental effect on the performance. Both jockey Cahill and trainer L. Treloar were of the view that HEARTFELT QUEST may benefit from the removal of the blinkers.

Stewards questioned D. Browne regarding the tactics adopted on LADY ECHELON, in particular the reasons for being positioned behind the lead, which is in contrast to the filly’s most recent racing pattern. He stated it had not been his intention to be in such a handy position, however after beginning well and travelling a short distance there was a distinct lack of pace in the race and he elected to remain in this position as the filly was travelling comfortably.

A post-race veterinary examination of LONGSHAW, which trailed the field and finished a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Jockey J. Byrne reported to stewards that, in his opinion, LONGSHAW, would be more suited to racing over longer distances.

Race 5: Smith & Geyer Property Valuers Class 1 H'cap - 1600m

Both THE CAPTAIN’S WIFE (M. Hellyer) and WRITTEN ABOVE ALL (K. Matheson) both jumped away awkwardly.

AURA NOIR (G. Goold) raced greenly in the early stages and on a number of occasions made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced. Trainer G. Pollock was advised that a warning would be placed on AURA NOIR regarding its racing manners. Mr Pollock indicated he would now consider the gelding’s immediate racing future.

LOCHTORIO (T. Harrison) raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to improve to a position outside the lead near the 900m.

Race 6: GT Print Class 2 H'cap – 1400m

HARLEQUIN’S GOLD (M. Speers) was slow to begin.

ROMEO LAD (L. Rolls) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with ORIENTAL GRACE (R. McMahon) and lost ground.

When the pace slackened near the 1000m, both PHOENIX FORCE (K. Wharton) and REQUIREMENT (D. Browne) overraced for a short distance.

Approaching the 800m, CRAIGLEA SHERRY (M. Morris) shifted out to improve and raced wide from that point onwards.

Both PHOENIX FORCE and REQUIREMENT were held up for clear running from approaching the 400m until leaving the 200m.

ELUSIVE STORM (Matthew Palmer) raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded M. Speers the opportunity to comment on the performance of HARLEQUIN’S GOLD, which was below market expectations. M. Speers stated that after being slow to begin he was forced to be positioned in the second half of the field, which was in contrast to the gelding’s traditional racing pattern, which is to lead. He added that despite this, HARLEQUIN’S GOLD travelled well throughout the event, however when placed under pressure in the home straight, the gelding did not respond and proved disappointing. It was his opinion that the performance could be solely attributed to HARLEQUIN’S GOLD being unable to race in a forward position in today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of HARLEQUIN’S GOLD failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Trainer T. Whittington reported that ORIENTAL GRACE pulled up sore in the off foreleg. A post-race veterinary examination of ORIENTAL GRACE revealed the mare to have suffered a bowed off fore tendon. Mr Whittington was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to its next race start.

Race 7: Sommer’s Fuel Supplies Class 1 H'cap – 1200m

Prior to correct weight being semaphored, jockey A. Coome, rider of PLAY IT AGAIN ISA, requested to view the stewards patrol footage to ascertain if his mount had been denied a fair start. After viewing the patrol footage, it was established that the barrier gates of PLAY IT AGAIN ISA failed to open with the rest of the field. Stewards therefore acting under AR134A deemed that PLAY IT AGAIN ISA had been denied a fair start and declared the gelding a non runner at 3.51 pm. All monies invested on PLAY IT AGAIN ISA were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

4 cents in the dollar for the Win #8
7 cents in the dollar for place of winner #8
6 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #11
5 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #4

MARINA SANDS (R. Wiggins) and BEARDED DRAGON (K. Wharton) both jumped away awkwardly and made heavy contact.

ROCK HUNTER (J. Byrne) was tightened for room at the start and lost ground between TAHOE CITY (G. Cooksley) and MAGNI (G. Goold), which shifted in.

CARDS ‘N’ OWLS (B. Appo) began very awkwardly, making heavy contact with the barrier partition and as a result lost ground.

Near the 800m, ROCK HUNTER had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room to the inside of MAGNI, which shifted in. MAGNI then raced wide for the remainder of the race.

JUST POOKENALONG (J. Stanley) raced wide throughout.

BEARDED DRAGON (K. Wharton) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight, and approaching the 300m shifted out and in doing so inconvenienced ROCK HUNTER.

MAGNI was forced wider on the track near 300m.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GUNDY STAR, M. Cahill stated that the gelding was under pressure from a point leaving the 600m. He added that GUNDY STAR may not have been entirely comfortable on today’s track conditions, however was still disappointed with its performance. Trainer R. Heathcote agreed that GUNDY STAR had not raced comfortably in the track conditions and in light of today’s performance would endeavour to start horses on tracks rated no worse than dead, and gave an undertaking to stewards to report any abnormality that comes to light which may have had a bearing on today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of GUNDY STAR failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards questioned stable representative Mr G. Thomson regarding the improved performance of the winner MARINA SANDS. He stated that the gelding has shown potential in track work however has proved disappointing in its recent form. He added that, in his opinion, the improved performance could be attributed to today’s gear changes, particularly the addition of a tongue-tie.

Race 8: Hayman’s Electrical & Data Suppliers Warana Class 3 Plate - 1200m

NARCISSUS (M. Hellyer) jumped away very awkwardly and lost significant ground before being ridden vigorously to be positioned 4 wide outside the lead throughout the event.

ROYAL SHOUT (P. Hammersley) and QUARTERLY (M. Cahill) both raced wide throughout.

RUN WITH ME (G. Cooksley) overraced during the middle stages.

ALL MY ANGELS (D. Browne) was held up during the early stages of the home straight until leaving the 200m.

Approaching the 300m, QUARTERLY (M. Cahill) shifted out when struck with the whip.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WIND WAND, R. McMahon stated that with today’s pattern of racing he tried to ride the horse more positively and as a result was caught wide for the majority of the event. He was of the view that racing wide with the impost of 59 kilograms contributed to the disappointing performance.

Stewards questioned apprentice jockey P. Schmidt regarding the performance and tactics adopted on SAFE WORLD. Miss Schmidt stated it had been her intention to position SAFE WORLD closer to the lead however after travelling a short distance it became apparent she would be caught wide and elected to take hold near the 1000m to secure running closer to the fence near the tail of the field. She added that despite overracing slightly, the gelding travelled comfortably throughout, however was held up rounding the home turn. Stewards further questioned her regarding the tactics rounding the home turn where it appeared she had opportunity to shift wider on the track around the heels of DENMARK HILL (C. Jokic) at that point. Miss Schmidt stated that due to the pattern of racing today she had been reluctant to shift wider on the track and was of the opinion that Miss C. Jokic, rider of DENMARK HILL, was carrying her whip in the right hand and may shift out under pressure and avail her of clear running. Stewards advised Miss Schmidt that, in their opinion, she had erred in that clear running was presented to her and she would have been expected to take that run rather than stay to the inside. However given Miss Schmidt’s explanation, stewards could not hold her culpable under the rules. Miss Schmidt further added that SAFE WORLD would take benefit from the run and would be more suited to races over longer distances where the gelding is able to be positioned closer to the lead.
