GENERAL

As T. Bell and A. Butler were indisposed, riding changes were made as per the Stewards' Summary Sheet.

Race 1: Sky Racing World No.1 In Racing Maiden H'cap – 1200m

HOTEL AFFAIR (D. Carrigg) was slow to begin.

When the pace of the race steadied after passing the 1600m, SOUTHERN CAPTAIN (R. McMahon) and SHALAKO (M. Carson) both overraced. A short distance later, SOUTHERN CAPTAIN shifted out, forcing SHALAKO wider on the track. Due to this, ELIZABETH’S DREAM and NEXT ERA (D. Browne) both improved forward when positioned wide and assumed positions on the speed.

NEXT ERA raced greenly and laid out under pressure in the home straight.

A. Spinks reported that after passing the 1600m, the saddle on ELEGANTLY slipped forward, placing him at a disadvantage for some distance.

When asked to comment on the performance of SOUTHERN CAPTAIN, R. McMahon stated that his mount raced greenly after overracing in the early stages and did not run out a strong 1800m.

Race 2: Sky Racing No.1 In Racing Maiden H'cap – 1200m

The start of this race was delayed when ANOTHER PAIGE proved difficult to load. Trainer J. Johnson was advised that a further barrier certificate would be required prior to its next race start.

The start was further delayed when INVICTUS MANEO reared after being loaded, inuring rider C. Kearney. INVICTUS MANEO was declared a late scratching at 1.02 pm. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on INVICTUS MANEO were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

0 cent in the dollar for the Win #10
0 cent in the dollar for place of winner #10
1 cent in the dollar for 2nd place #8
1 cent in the dollar for 3rd place #3

SP bets are subject to deductions

Trainer R. Armstrong was advised that he must obtain 2 further barrier certificates, with 1 to be obtained in an official trial.

ZARFASTAR (V. Colgan) was held up rounding the home turn in the early stages of the home straight.

ATOMIC AGE (R. Wiggins) was tightened for room shortly after entering the home straight between GO THE SHOW (M. Morris) and ANDONNA (J. Missen), which shifted out when slightly inconvenienced by DAMDEFY (G. Killen), which shifted out under pressure.

ANDONNA (J. Missen) raced wide throughout.

As G. Killen was injured after riding in Race 2 he was unable to fulfil his remaining engagements and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

Race 3: Sky Racing App Class 2 H'cap – 1200m

The start was delayed when PRISCILLA’S STAR shifted its near fore plate.

THOMAS THE WELSH (E. Wilkinson) and FATHER SHADY (L. Tarrant) were slow to begin.

PRISCILLA’S STAR (B. Ainsworth) raced wide for the majority of the race.

G. Goold reported it was not his intention to lead on SINE TIMORE, however after beginning well from an outside alley he allowed the horse to stride forward when there appeared to be little early pace in the race.

V. Venkaya reported that PURRFECTLYFEARLESS laid in under pressure in the home straight, resulting in him being unable to fully test the gelding over the concluding stages.

R. Wiggins was asked to comment on the disappointing performance of MISS SUNSET. He stated that after travelling well throughout the filly did not respond when placed under pressure near the 400m and was disappointing in the run to the finish line. Stable representative Mr L. Cavanagh could offer no further explanation, and would monitor the progress of the filly in the coming days and would consider sending MISS SUNSET for a spell.

Stewards questioned L. Tarrant regarding his riding and tactics adopted on FATHER SHADY. Of particular concern was the positioning of the horse at the tail of the field and also his riding from the 400m onwards. Apprentice Tarrant indicated that after performing well when positioned in the second half of the field at its most recent start, he attempted to ride the horse in a similar manner, however after overracing in the early stages he was unable to secure a trailing position behind PURRFECTLYFEARLESS and was therefore obliged to be positioned wider on the track than he would have liked. He added that as a result of this he did not want to pressure the horse too early in the home straight and did not apply pressure until near the 250m, at which point the horse responded well, however he was then placed at a disadvantage after dropping his off-side rein approaching the 100m. Stewards noted the comments and took no further action.

Race 4: Qld Barrier Trials On Sky Class 1 H'cap – 1000m

BUTTONS (A. Spinks) was slow to begin.

CASINO GARDENS (M. Morris) was tightened for room and checked at the start between PERANTO (A. Allen), which shifted in, and STELLARCRAFT (D. Browne), which shifted out.

Approaching the 600m, BUTTONS was steadied and raced ungenerously when racing in restricted room to the inside of YOUNG COPPERFIELD (P. Homes).

BUTTONS was examined by the veterinary surgeon following the race and found to be making a respiratory noise. Trainer T. Cotsiopoulos will be advised that the results of an endoscopic examination must be provided to stewards prior to its next race start, including a veterinary clearance.

G. Goold reported that BIRDIE BLITZ did not show sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside as intended, and after passing the 800m had a tendency to shy away from runners to his inside and raced greenly during the middle stages. He added that, in his opinion, the gelding would benefit from races where there was less early pace.

STELLARCRAFT lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 5: Skysportsradio.com.au QTIS 2yo – H'cap – 1000m

BIMBIARRA (S. Bogenhuber) began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with its nearside barrier gate.

SANDON RIVER (J. Johnson) and WORTHY CAUSE (R. McMahon) were slow to begin.

Stewards asked D. Browne to comment on the performance of TOTALLY SURE. He stated that after beginning well the filly travelled until the 800m and then became very awkward and lost significant ground. He added after this his mount did not travel comfortably and he was obliged to niggle the horse throughout the event. Jockey Browne felt TOTALLY SURE would benefit from the addition of blinkers. Trainer K. Schweida indicated that he would experiment with the addition of blinkers and perhaps stepping the filly up over more ground.

A. Allen was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of MISS SO GOOD. He stated that after settling back in the early stages, the filly was reluctant to improve into the race despite his vigorous riding. He added that the filly raced greenly in the home straight.

Stewards asked apprentice jockey J. Johnson to comment on the performance of SANDON RIVER. She indicated that after being slow to begin she rode vigorously in the early stages and the gelding was reluctant to improve to the outside of WORTHY CAUSE (R. McMahon) when passing the 800m. She further added that when asked to improve rounding the home turn outside of TOTALLY SURE, her mount again raced greenly with its head in the air, showing a reluctance to race between horses. J. Johnson indicated that when afforded clear running in the home straight, the gelding found the line well and was of the view that a step up in distance would be beneficial for the gelding.

When asked to comment on the performance of BIMBIARRA, S. Bogenhuber advised that in the early stages the gelding was inclined to lay in and felt the disappointing performance could be attributed to the one-week back up from its most recent start. Trainer D. Gollan supported S. Bogenhuber’s comments and indicated that BIMBIARRA would now be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of BIMBIARRA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6: Skyracing.tv BM85 – H'cap – 1200m

The start of the race was delayed when EMOTICON was reluctant to proceed forward to the barriers.

MAGIC CASSIUS (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly, almost dislodging its rider.

When questioned into the tactics adopted on ZED MAN today, rider S. Bogenhuber stated that she was given no specific instructions, however was aware of the horse being slow to begin in its most recent starts, however after ZED MAN began very well today she elected to allow the horse to improve forward so was not to be trapped wide throughout the race. Trainer C .Williamson confirmed the instructions and further advised stewards that if possible he would prefer the horse ridden in a forward manner, however with the horse’s tendency to be slow to begin, this was not always possible. Stewards noted the explanation.

A post race veterinary examination of MAGIC CASSIUS revealed the horse to be lame in near foreleg. Trainer B. Guy indicated the horse would now be retired from racing.

Race 7: Best Races Best Faces Class 4 H'cap – 1400m

Trainer P. Duncan was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for JAZZBO MARKS by the prescribed time.

Trainer L. Richardson was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for STROMBO by the prescribed time.

CRAIGLEA SHERRY (M. Morris), JAZZBO MARKS (A. Fancourt) and GRAB THE LOOT (S. Bogenhuber) all jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Near the 400m, SPURRING SPIRIT (R. Ride) shifted out in an attempt to secure clear running and made heavy contact with JAZZBO MARKS (A. Fancourt), causing SPURRING SPIRIT to become unbalanced.

TAIL OF A DIVA (B. Stower) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Apprentice L. Tarrant was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of SUGAR DADDY. L. Tarrant stated that after travelling well throughout the race he was forced to race on the inside part of the track in the home straight and, in his opinion, this was inferior ground. He also added that SUGAR DADDY was looking for further distance than that of today’s race.

When questioned regarding the performance of JAZZBO MARKS, apprentice A. Fancourt stated that she was instructed to race quieter than previous starts, however she was forced to race wide without cover. A. Fancourt added she was nevertheless not entirely disappointed with the gelding’s finishing effort.

Stewards questioned apprentice B. Stower, rider of TAIL OF A DIVA regarding the tactics adopted on the horse in that after obtaining a position midfield one off the fence Miss Stower directed TAIL OF A DIVA wider on the track to improve, which resulted in the mare being positioned wide outside the lead during the middle stages. Miss Stower indicated her instructions were to lead, but after being slowly away she was forced to occupy a midfield position, however she was of the view that her trainer would have liked her to have attempted to improve to the lead, however TAIL OF A DIVA did not have sufficient speed to cross the leaders and this caused her to be caught wide. Stewards advised her that whilst it would be considered favourable to fulfil instructions where possible, she should have accepted in this case that this was no longer possible and used her own judgement.

Race 8: Racing Retro Class 1 H'cap – 1400m

A. Spinks was stood down by the doctor after riding in Race 4 and was replaced by M. Carson on TOUCH A STAR.

After being slow to begin, MADHURIMA (V. Venkaya) was ridden vigorously during the early stages and then raced wide throughout.

Near the 1000m, CONTRAVENTION (L. Cassidy) overreached with its hind legs and struck its off fore leg, causing it to blunder badly and lose ground. BALINESE BOY (K. Wharton), which was following, had to be checked as a consequence. Jockey Cassidy reported that as a result of this he was reluctant to ride the horse along for the next 200m, however placed the horse under pressure from the 600m and when the gelding did not respond as he had anticipated he held concerns that the horse may have suffered an injury from the earlier incident and was reluctant to place further pressure on the horse. A post race veterinary examination of CONTRAVENTION failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Over the concluding stages, WHAT A SENSATION (R. Ride) had to be steadied when tightened for room between BOUND TO GO (M. Vance) and RED CENT (G. Colless), which shifted out under pressure.

BOUND TO GO (M. Vance) overraced in the early stages.
