The start was delayed when STAR CHARIOT (W Schmidt) broke through the barriers and was quickly restrained.
The start was further delayed when PLENTY OF ACTION (J Stephens) became fractious and broke through barriers riderless, completing a circuit of the track. PLENTY OF ACTION was declared a late scratching at 4.23pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, all monies invested on PLENTY OF ACTION were ordered to be refunded, with deductions six cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, and seven cents in the dollar on the face value of all place bets to be applicable.
A veterinary inspection of PLENTY OF ACTION revealed the horse to have lacerations to both hind legs.
K Fisher, the trainer of PLENTY OF ACTION was advised the horse must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to its next start.
On returning to scale, a protest was lodged by L McCoy, rider of the second placegetter, MONETARY NOTE, against FUR TRADER (App T Huxham), being declared first, alleging interference near the 600m and over the final 100m. It was established that near the 600m, MONETARY NOTE (L McCoy) was momentarily crowded for room by FUR TRADER (App T Huxham) which shifted in. Leaving the 100m, MONETARY NOTE shifted out when hit with whip, forcing its rider L McCoy to stop riding and straighten her mount, shortly after, FUR TRADER which was racing greenly, shifted in, forcing MONETARY NOTE inwards for a short distance, and then shifted out near the finish line. Given the degree of interference, and the margin between both runners, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was posted.
STAR CHARIOT (W Schmidt) began awkwardly.
GENERALLY CHARMING (M Cant) and DANLO (M Dale) brushed on jumping away when both horses shifted ground.
Both FLASH FOR CASH (App C McIver) and IPI TOMBI (M Barnham) raced wide throughout the race.
