Stewards sought an explanation for Trainer P. Brennan regarding the improved performance of TALISMANS LUCK. Mr Brennan was confident of a forward showing as the gelding had worked well and appreciated a return to racing on the grass surface.
At the scales, Stewards were notified that barrier seven (7) of BLUE PEREGRINE may have been slow to open. As this runner had finished second, Stewards could not consider an application to be declared a non-runner and correct weight was given. Subsequently, Trainer A. Jenkinson and Apprentice K Gates approached Stewards and wished to view the patrol film of the start to ascertain if WESTERN YORK (barrier 2) was afforded a fair start. While both parties were given the opportunity to view the patrol film, as correct weight had been declared, an application could not be considered.
Stewards were of the opinion that while the barrier of WESTERN YORK had been slow to open, the amount of ground lost was minimal (3/4 of a length).

1st –CLUB FUGAZI 2nd – CRAIGLEA FIGHTER 3rd – SUPER FELIX 4th – GOLD ADVANCE
Prior to this race, Trainer P Brennan advised Stewards that he would instruct Jockey M. Cullen (SUPER FELIX) to restrict his use of the whip, as he was of the opinion that the gelding seemed to resent use of the whip.

At approximately the 1000 metres, GOLD ADVANCE (J. Stephens) shifted in and away from CRAIGLEA FIGHTER (R Faehr) and cause LAST ARCH (A. Coome) to be steadied. CLUB FUGAZI (I. Coombes) which was following improved onto the heels of LAST ARCH and raced ungenerously for a short distance.
From approximately the 800 metres, SUPER FELIX improved wide on the track and raced wide for the remainder.
At approximately the 400 metres, DANE RHYTHM (C. Kearney) was taken wider on the track when LAST ARCH improved to its inside.

Jockey O’Hara stated she had suggested a gear change of blinkers for its next start.
Prior to correct weight, Jockey M. Barnham and Trainer C Garland wished to view the patrol film to ascertain if BACK TO WIN had been afforded a fair start. After doing so, both parties were satisfied that the gelding had not been impeded at the start and correct weight was declared.

After taking evidence from Apprentice C Pye and Mr Button, it was established that the barrier had failed to open in unison with the other barriers when the start was effected and as a result POWER TO EXCEED had been denied an opportunity to begin with the field, had lost ground at the start (3L) and accordingly was declared a non-runner. On the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all bets on POWER TO EXCEED be refunded with deductions of 22 cents the win and 17 cents the place apply to winning bets.
