RACE 1 MAIDEN HANDICAP 1960 METRES 12 STARTERS
At the 1600 metres GO RUBEN commenced to hang out and continued to hang out and race ungenerously throughout the event. INDIVIDULIST (NZ) which was pulling hard shifted out at the 1400 metre mark, forcing NAVONOD and BIT ON THE SIDE wider on the track. At the 150 metre mark, INDIVIDUALIST (NZ) shifted in under pressure and had to be straightened by it's rider. Approaching the finishing line, BIT ON THE SIDE (NZ) became awkward on the heels of HOPE FLOATS which shifted out.
RACE 2 CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200 METRES 16 STARTERS
PADDY'S PAL reared when the start was effected and lost considerable ground. Jockey W Kenning lost the use of his irons in this incident and was unable to gather them throughout the event. PADDY'S PAL was captured by the Clerk of the Course at the completion of the event. A stable representative for Trainer J Bell was advised that a Barrier Certificate will be required before PADDY'S PAL can race again at a registered meeting. Jockey W Kenning sought Ambulance attention following his ride on PADDY'S PAL. At the 600 metres WHERE'S JOHN had to be momentarily steadied when CAN SHE CAN CAN shifted in. Apprentice N Evans was questioned as to the reason why he only claimed 1.5kg of his entitled 2kg allowance on the winner UNDERCOVER PRINCE. It was established that due to a misunderstanding that Apprentice Evans had only claimed a Country Allowance entitlement. Apprentice N Evans was advised of his obligations.
RACE 3 SUPER QRIS 2YO HANDICAP 1400 METRES 14 STARTERS
IMPATIENCE was inspected behind the barriers by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to start. MAHATTA was slow to begin. SEA LOVER jumped in taking SOVEREIGN ROAD in onto NUBRICK at the start. Approaching the 1100 metres, SOVEREIGN ROAD commenced to over race for some distance. Making the home VALLEY VIEW struck the heels of WOODSLOT and shifted out abruptly checking NUBRICK and SOVEREIGN ROAD. TIME AFFAIR failed to secure clear running in the home straight until the final 150 metres. Apprentice D Crossland was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on SEA LOVER. App Crossland advised that his instructions were to try and obtain a sit behind the leaders from the wide gate, however, he had pushed forward in an endeavour to obtain a position closer to the fence but was caught extremely wide. App Crossland further stated that after passing the 800 metres he endeavoured to go back to obtain cover for his mount, however he was unable to do so. The explanation of App D Crossland was noted.
RACE 4 CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1400 METRES 6 STARTERS
CASTELOZOS which delayed the start when it refused to load into the Barriers, was declared a late scratching at 2:33 p.m. Bookmakers were ordered to draw a line in their ledgers and a deduction of 12c in the $ Win and 12c in the $ Place on all bets above the line was imposed. The connections of CASTELOZOS were advised that CASTELOZOS would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being permitted to race again, and the nomination for CASTELOZOS would not be considered for future TAB meetings until Stewards were satisfied the horse would load in the desired manner. MORGAN'S GREY, HEELS OF FORTUNE and IVORY WALK were all slow to begin. At the 1200 metres, SHAWNO had to be steadied away from the heels of VISLANDA which shifted in. SHAWNO failed to secure clear running until the 200 metre mark.
RACE 5 OPEN HANDICAP 1000 METRES 13 STARTERS
Jockey W Kenning who was still feeling the effects of an earlier race ride was replaced on DELTA LAD by Jockey John Stephens. RIPPON JUGAH jumped awkwardly. CHAMBIRA was tightened for room at the start between CARACAS and ROSENEATH JESTER which shifted out. At the 800 metres ROSENEATH JESTER hung out momentarily forcing PROSPECTOR CHIEF and SETO ROYAL wider on the track. Making the home turn SETO ROYAL was placed in restricted room between PROSPECTOR CHIEF and ANALYTIC which shifted out to improve. At the 150 metre mark ROSENEATH JESTER shifted out under hard riding. CARACAS failed to secure a clear run until the 200 metre mark.
RACE 6 TOWNSVILLE CUP OPEN H/CAP 2100 METRES 16 STARTERS
At the 300 metre mark SHAHNE TARTAN (NZ) which was held up for clear running, had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring ROCKET BALL. RED SAVAGE, which bled from the off side nostril only was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon.
RACE 7 CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1630 METRES 12 STARTERS
Jockey C Reith reported a recurrence of shoulder injury after riding in Race 6, and was replaced on GILD by W Kenning. At the 600 metres AVIAN DANCER was momentarily tightened for room between STARWOOD and GILD which was taken out marginally by STARRY YEATS.
RACE 8 CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1630 METRES 16 STARTERS
Jockey K Mahoney had reported distressed after riding in race 7 and was replaced on ROYAL AMBER by C Beets. D Whitmore replaced C Reith on ANOTHER SOUND, and R Moses replaced D Craven on RAVING when Jockey D Craven reported ill. BELLESHANI (NZ) was a late scratching at 5:09 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on Veterinary advice. Bookmakers were ordered to draw a line and deductions of .07c in $ Win and .08c in $ Place on all bets made above that line was imposed. FOLLOW MY KISS was slow to begin. At the 1400 metres CHELLE'S PRIDE had to be steadied when KIALOA( Ryan) shifted in. Jockey R Ryan was advised to allow a full 2 lengths when crossing in future.
All winners, as well as 2nd and 3rd of race 6 were sent to be swabbed.
GENERAL: Trainer B Brown reported that ANCIENT WARRIOR which competed in race 3 at Townsville on 28th July, had pulled up shin sore following this event.
