LATE RIDING CHANGES:
As R. Mules had sustained an injury at trackwork and was indisposed, the following substitutions were made: Race 5, I. Toward to ride VICTORY ALLEY; Race 7, D. Simmons to ride KEEP A DREAM.
Race 5: As M. Elliott was indisposed, J. P. Stanley was substituted as the rider of REAL ASSET.
Race 1: Brisbane Bloodstock QTIS 2-YEAR-OLD Maiden Handicap - 1000m.
1st - FLYING WOODPECKER 2nd - CRAFTY’S BROTHER 3 rd - LA SAUVAGE 4th - MICKEY JOE
Shortly after the start LITTLE CUTIE (J. Felix), which had been slow to begin, commenced to attempt to buck and was pulled up. Trainer Mr I. Drake was informed that LITTLE CUTIE must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
Near the 300 metres LA SAUVAGE (P. Cullen) was held up and had to be shifted out around the heels of MICKEY JOE (D. Green) to obtain clear running.
Jockey W. Kenning, the rider of SLUGGER, reported that the bit pulled through the colt’s mouth during running and that on returning to the enclosure the horse was sore. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that SLUGGER was lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr I. Drake was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to SLUGGER being permitted to race again.
Race 2: QRSE Alan Bailey Maiden Plate - 1000m.
1st - GOLD TUSMANI 2nd - BANGALOW 3rd - YUMIKO 4th - CITY OF SMILES
Due to a misunderstanding M. Bennett was shown as the declared rider of ZIPSNIP. L. Morrison was substituted.
After being placed in the barriers TIME SWITCH (D. Craven) became fractious.
At the start KNOTS (D. Green) and TIME SWITCH (D. Craven), both of which shifted ground, bumped.
D. Crossland explained that at about the 750 metres ROWDEN DANE commenced to hang in and he was obliged to change the whip into his left hand.
Near the 700 metres BANGALOW (W. Kenning) shifted in and away from TIME SWITCH (D. Craven) and in doing so tightened CITY OF SMILES (G. Kliese). W. Kenning stopped riding and straightened his mount.
Leaving the 300 metres CLARINET (W. Cullen) shifted slightly and hampered TIME SWITCH (D. Craven). W. Cullen was advised that he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight.
Over the concluding stages BEST WAY (I. Toward), which was having its first race start, raced greenly.
When asked about the disappointing performance of CITY OF SMILES Jockey G. Kliese explained that after racing well in a forward position early, the gelding failed to finish the race off, as it had been inclined to do at its previous recent starts.
A post-race veterinary examination of STORMY KELL (P. Cullen), which performed poorly, did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: Brisbane Bloodstock Yearling Sale Maiden Plate (Consolation) - 1000m.
1st - IDALIA 2nd - SILVER HURON 3rd - GRUMPY PAT 4th - BLUE STAR RISING
Jockey D. Craven (PRINCE CHALLENGER) reported that shortly after the start he lost his offside iron and was unable to regain it until near the 800 metres.
LET’S MAMBO (Apprentice R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 600 metres BLUE STAR RISING (P. Cullen) shifted in slightly and tightened LET’S MAMBO (Apprentice R. McMahon), which had to be eased, and in doing so obliged HOME GIRL (J. Long) to be eased. P. Cullen was advised to exercise more care in future.
P. Cullen reported that BLUE STAR RISING raced ungenerously after entering the straight.
Race 4: Juices International Maiden Handicap - 1300m.
1st - NATHAN’S COMMAND 2nd - WHATSATWATONVILLE 3rd - RICHIE RICH 4th - LADY CLANG
OUR MISS KYLIE (P. Cullen) was slow to begin.
Near the 1200 metres BLAZING ARROW (D. Green) shifted out slightly, taking SHOCKFORCE (F. Edwards) out onto OUR MISS KYLIE (P. Cullen), which in turn shifted out taking EMMBOWEN (G. Kliese) out onto RICHIE RICH (A. Cox), which was hampered.
In the early and middle stages RICHIE RICH (A. Cox) was obliged to race wide.
From the 800 metres to the 500 metres LADY CLANG (M. Bennett) was held up behind the heels of SHOCKFORCE (F. Edwards) and unable to obtain clear running.
D. Green, the rider of BLAZING ARROW, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 200 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of SEADOG (W. Cullen)which had to be checked and lost its position. As a consequence of the incident SEA DOG was taken out and bumped the hindquarters of OUR MISS KYLIE (P. Cullen), which was turned inwards. Also in the incident both ON THE FAIRWAY (J.Stopps) and OCH AYE (J. Felix) was hampered. D. Green was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Sunday, 19th December 2004, up to and including Sunday, 26th December 2004 (3 NQ meetings). In addition D. Green was fined $2,000 and given 2 calendar months in which to pay the fine. If the fine is not paid by 14th February 2005 D. Green’s licence to ride in races will be suspended for a further period of 2 calendar weeks.
Race 5: Immovable Option Class 3 Plate - 1400m.
1st - DUSTY’S MAGIC 2nd - SKYWAYS 3rd (DH) BEAU JEUNE, ALL MONDE
SKYWAYS (J. Felix) began awkwardly.
On jumping ALL MONDE (W. Cullen) and FLASH TRACK (D. Green) were crowded for room between RIVER LADY (L. Morrison), which shifted out, and I’LL BE GONE (P. Cullen), which shifted in.
FLASH TRACK (D. Green) was obliged to race wide throughout.
In the straight REAL ASSET (J.P. Stanley) was held up and unable to obtain clear running from the 250 metres to the finish.
Race 6: QRSE Pam O’Neill Class 5 Handicap - 1200m.
1st - QUAYTMAN 2nd - MS HAVOC 3rd - BABINDA HALF 4th - PAINTED UP
MS HAVOC (M. Bennett) began awkwardly.
After the 1000 metres MS HAVOC (M. Bennett) shifted in when not quite clear of FRISKY ROSE (Apprentice R. Plumb)which had to be eased. M. Bennett was advised that in future he must ensure that he is clear of other runners before shifting ground. After this incident FRISKY ROSE was reluctant to settle until approaching the 800 metres.
Leaving the 100 metres when Apprentice R. McMahon, the rider of TRICKY DICKY, dropped his reins TRICKY DICKY shifted out and bumped SISTER CATHERINE (P. Cullen).
Race 7: Werner Quast Class 1 Handicap - 1200m.
1st - FRISKY SPRINGS 2nd - MR JACOBS 3rd - RESOUNDING VICTORY 4th - GOOD OLD DAYS
Trainer Mr K. Spillane was fined $50 under L.R. 71(1) for failing to withdraw BRONZE DESIRE by the prescribed time.
MISS LOPEZ (D. Green) overraced in the early stages.
INVASIVE (J. Felix) was obliged to race wide throughout.
At the entrance to the straight RESOUNDING VICTORY (P. Cullen) was unable to obtain clear running.
When asked to explain the poor performance of MAHATHIR D. Crossland stated that the gelding raced well in the early and middle part of the race but failed to respond to his riding over the concluding stages, and in his opinion would be better suited over further ground.
Race 8: Gainsborough Lodge Handicap - 1400m.
1st - RAISE ‘N’ WYN 2nd - BORZOV 3rd - MAGLI 4th – GAZZAM
After being placed in the barriers RACE CAREER (D. Green) broke through, was quickly restrained and returned to take its place in the field.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow P. Cullen, the rider of WELL INFORMED which finished fifth, to view the official video films with a view to lodging an objection against BORZOV (M. Bennett) being declared second. After viewing the films, in the presence of M. Bennett, P. Cullen decided not to lodge a protest. Subsequently stewards found that over the final 50 metres WELL INFORMED was unable to obtain clear running.
At the start GAZZAM (J. P. Stanley) shifted out and hampered VARMINT (Apprentice R. Plumb).
Race 9: Seven Figures Class 2 Handicap - 1000m.
1st - SEE YOU TWIST 2nd - KID COLAC 3rd - RUPTURED 4th - AIR TURBULENCE
W. Kenning, the rider of JORDAN’S DRAGON, reported that his mount got its tongue over the bit during the race, placing him at a disadvantage in riding his mount out.
Near the 600 metres FLYING BEAUTY (F. Edwards) was obliged to race in restricted room inside YOUNG AUREOLE (I. Toward).
Between the 600 metres and the entrance to the straight YOUNG AUREOLE (I. Toward) overraced and had to be eased to avoid the heels of GREAT GRID (A. Cox).
In the early part of the straight FLYING BEAUTY (F. Edwards) was disappointed for a run between GREAT GRID (A. Cox) and FULMINEO (M. Bennett), and then over the final 150 metres was unable to obtain clear running.
