GENERAL: Race 5, Townsville, Thursday 28th July 2005:
Stewards today resumed the adjourned inquiry into the reason SISTER CATHERINE (P. Cullen) shifted out and bumped BABINDA BELLE (G. Kliese) shortly after the finish. After considering all the circumstances, stewards decided not to take any further action.
Race 1: Townsville City Council Class 1 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - TWO TO CLANGO 2nd - PRIMODORO 3rd - VILLA BELLA 4th - RAINBOW DANCER
When M. Bennett, the declared rider for JUNGLE KING, was overweight and no other suitable rider was available, permission was given for M. Bennett to ride the horse 1kg overweight. Jockey Bennett was fined $200 under A.R. 120(b).
After being placed in the barriers ROSIE’S BOY (J. Stopps) broke through, was quickly restrained, examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
Jockey P. Cullen (PAYPACKET) reported that in the early and middle stages the reins slipped through his hands on several occasions, placing him at a disadvantage in riding his mount along.
Jockey D. Green reported that approaching the 900 metres VALLEY DANE hung out and raced ungenerously, and when restrained shifted in and was galloped on. After the race it was noted that VALLEY DANE had lost its off hind plate during running.
Near the 900 metres JUNGLE KING (M. Bennett) shifted in and when eased to avoid the heels of MOORINGS STRATEGY (A. Cox) became unbalanced, shifted in and hampered EXTENSION (D. Lloyd).
At the 800 metres TWO TO CLANGO (W. Kenning), which was overracing, had to be eased when crowded for room by TIME SWITCH (G. Kliese), which shifted in on two occasions despite the efforts of its rider. Jockey W. Kenning was cautioned regarding the nature of his evidence during the inquiry.
From the 600 metres to the 500 metres ROBRENZ (F. Edwards) overraced and had to be restrained away from the heels of TWO TO CLANGO (W. Kenning).
In the early part of the straight ROBRENZ was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Race 2: SKY Channel Class 5 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - MONTE BIANCO 2nd - TRIP TO MANILA 3rd - SEA COUNSEL 4th - ARMAMENT/SUSSEX (DH)
As G. Baker, the declared rider for ARMAMENT, failed to arrive on course by the prescribed time due to transport difficulties, G. Kliese was substituted. The explanation tendered by G. Baker was noted.
QUAYTMAN (J. Stopps) began awkwardly and was slow to get into stride.
Leaving the 1000 metres MONTE BIANCO (J. P. Stanley) shifted ground momentarily, taking TRIP TO MANILA (D. Crossland) in and tightening SPOT OF TROUBLE (P. Hammersley), SUSSEX (D. Price) and SEA COUNSEL (P. Cullen)
At the 600 metres SEA COUNSEL (P. Cullen) shifted in slightly and hampered THE SEANSTER (F. Edwards).
Near the 500 metres ELASTICITY (Apprentice C. Pay) was eased to avoid the heels of THE SEANSTER (F. Edwards), which shifted out to improve.
At about the 150 metres ARMAMENT (G. Kliese) was eased to avoid the heels of SUSSEX (D. Price), which shifted in.
Approaching the 100 metres SEA COUNSEL (P. Cullen) laid in and inconvenienced SUSSEX (D. Price). P. Cullen quickly stopped riding and straightened his mount.
A post-race veterinary examination of SEA COUNSEL (P. Cullen) revealed that the gelding had sustained a small laceration to the off foreleg.
A post-race veterinary examination of ARMAMENT (G. Kliese) revealed that the gelding had a laceration to the near stifle.
Race 3: Wilson Ryan & Grose Class 3 Plate - 1400 metres
1st - SECRET RAIN 2nd - MULLIGAN 3rd - LINK HOGTHROB 4th - GUM SCRUB
When the start was effected MR NATCH (D. Lloyd) stood flat-footed and lost ground.
On jumping LINK HOGTHROB (P. Hammersley) shifted in, taking HURRICANE VIC (Apprentice C. Pay) in onto MULLIGAN (D. Crossland).
When the pace eased approaching the 1000 metres SEQUALO BUCK (M. Bennett) was eased to avoid the heels of MULLIGAN (D. Crossland). SECRET RAIN (P. Cullen), which was following, was eased in consequence.
In the early part of the straight SEQUALO BUCK (M. Bennett) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Race 4: Carmichael Ford Open Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - RIVER HUNTER 2nd - SNICK 3rd - OUR SECRET AGENT 4th - KENWOOD ALLEGRO
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow I. Toward and D. Green to view the official film of the closing stages. After viewing the films I. Toward decided not to lodge an objection.
At the start STRIDERITE (G. Kliese) and STONEY PLANET (M. Bennett) were crowded for room between PAINTED UP (G. Farrer), which shifted out, and MAPS (P. Hammersley), which shifted in.
Approaching the 1200 metres BRUNT (W. Kenning) became unbalanced after making contact with KENWOOD ALLEGRO (I. Toward). For some distance after this incident BRUNT and KENWOOD ALLEGRO made contact on several occasions.
In the early and middle stages STONEY PLANET (M. Bennett) overraced.
Approaching the 150 metres KENWOOD ALLEGRO (I. Toward) and SNICK (D. Green) came together on several occasions as a result of both horses shifting ground.
An initial post-race veterinary examination of BRUNT (W. Kenning) did not reveal any abnormalities. A subsequent examination showed signs consistent with the gelding having kicked the rear barrier gate.
Race 5: Jim Gibbard Memorial Class 6 Handicap - 1630 metres
1st - SPURIOUS 2nd - GONZO 3rd - DORIAN 4th - DON’T WORRY
FINAL STORM was a late withdrawal, at 9.00 a.m., by order of the stewards. Trainer Mr A. Jones supplied a veterinary certificate for the horse.
As D. Crossland was to be overweight G. Baker was substituted as the rider of GIVE AND TELL. D. Crossland was fined $200 under A.R. 120(b).
From the 1300 metres to the 1000 metres SPURIOUS (P. Cullen) and LARCENY (D. Green) came together on more than one occasion. Both riders were advised to exercise more care.
On more than one occasion between the 600 metres and the 500 metres DORIAN (Apprentice C. Pay) and GONZO (P. Hammersley) came together.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight RESOUNDING VICTORY (P. Cullen) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
At the entrance to the straight GIVE AND TELL (G. Baker) was held up for a run.
Leaving the 200 metres DORIAN (Apprentice C. Pay) shifted out and caused minor inconvenience to GIVE AND TELL (G. Baker). DORIAN then continued to shift out whilst being ridden along and made contact with DON’T WORRY (M. Elliott). Apprentice C. Pay was severely admonished for permitting DORIAN to shift out.
Race 6: McDonalds Townsville Guineas QTIS 3-Year-Old - 1630 metres

Rounding the home turn GALICANO (D. Crossland) and WHAT A DUDE (J. Stopps) brushed.
THE SWEDISH CHEF (P. Hammersley) bled from both nostrils during running. Trainer Mr D. Crouch was advised that, as this was the second occasion on which the gelding has bled, THE SWEDISH CHEF was barred from racing in Australia forever under A.R. 53A.
Race 7: Jupiters Townsville Cup - 2100 metres
1st - AWESOME WARRIOR 2nd - LEGAL BRIEF 3rd - KOHNRAY STAR 4th - MAGRITTE

Race 8: XXXX Gold Up & Coming Stayers Cup Class 2 Handicap - 2100 metres
1st - JAKEO 2nd - KINGS CORONATION 3rd - SMART ZONE/SIR PHOENIX (DH)
Jockey J. Patton informed stewards that he had not been properly engaged to ride ON THE FAIRWAY. Trainer Mr J. Dixon was reprimanded under A.R. 175(k) for negligently declaring J. Patton as the rider of ON THE FAIRWAY without obtaining a firm commitment from that rider. Jockey J. Stopps was fined $200 under A.R. 175(k) in that his negligence led to Jockey J. Patton being unable to fulfil his engagement.
When M. Bennett, the declared rider for GENEROUS LADY, was to be overweight, M. Elliott was substituted. M. Bennett was fined $200 under A.R. 120(b).
After riding AWESOME WARRIOR in Race 7, P. Hammersley became indisposed and was unable to fulfil his engagement on GOLD TRUCE. As no other suitable rider was available to ride GOLD TRUCE at its allotted weight, stewards permitted J. Patton to ride the gelding 1½kg overweight. Jockey Hammersley was advised that he must provide a medical clearance before being permitted to ride again.
After being placed in the barriers WILL TO ENDURE (D. Green) became fractious.
At the start NORTH FIELD (J. P. Stanley) was inconvenienced when crowded for room between GENEROUS LADY (M. Elliott), which shifted in, and SANLUCAR (M. Cullen), which shifted out.
From the 1700 metres to the 1600 metres JOE’S FURY (J. Stopps) was reluctant to settle.
At about the 1600 metres and again at the 1000 metres NORTH FIELD (J. P. Stanley) overraced.
When asked about the performance of LAMISTER, Jockey D. Crossland explained that from its wide barrier draw the gelding was obliged to race wide in the early stages and then in his opinion performed reasonably well. He said that over the concluding stages he was reluctant to ride his mount out fully, as he was aware that D. Green was racing close to his heels on the inside. D. Crossland was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the finish.
Jockey F. Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the 100 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MUMS THE WORD (A. Cox), taking that gelding in onto ON THE FAIRWAY (G. Farrer), which was steadied and dictated inwards, resulting in TIARA ZIP (I. Toward) being checked and losing its position. F. Edwards was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 30th July 2005, up to and including 5th August 2005 (2 NQ meetings).
Right on the winning post NORTH FIELD (J. P. Stanley) and SIR PHOENIX (D. Lloyd) came together.
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that on pulling up, GOLD TRUCE (J. Patton), which compounded badly in the straight, had suffered an internal bleeding attack and died.
ALL WINNERS, LEGAL BRIEF AND KOHNRAY STAR WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
