Jockey J. Stopps was given the benefit of a very grave doubt as to whether he had changed his gear after weighing out to ride SOBER TYCOON. Nevertheless, Jockey Stopps was severely admonished.
After being placed in the barriers SOBER TYCOON (J. Stopps) became fractious, reared and struck its jockey, J. Stopps in the face. Jockey Stopps was examined by the Ambulance Officer and acting on his advice that Jockey Stopps was unfit to fulfil his engagement stewards ordered the withdrawal of SOBER TYCOON at 1.37 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on SOBER TYCOON be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of the gelding be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: win 6¢, place 7¢. Connections were advised that SOBER TYCOON must pass an official barrier trial prior to its next start.Subsequently J. When questioned about the performance of TOTAL IMPACT, Jockey D. Evans stated that after jumping the gelding refused to stretch out and in the early stages did not feel comfortable. He said that he was of the opinion that the horse was sore and therefore he stopped riding and eased his mount out of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of TOTAL IMPACT did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr G. Purdy undertook to advise stewards should anything be amiss with the gelding in the next few days.
