General Report:

Following an inspection of the racing surface on Monday 3rd March, Stewards acted under the terms of LR36(j) and ordered that the distances for Races 1,2,3,9 and 10 be shortened to 970m due to an unsafe section of track in the 1000m chute.

Jockey S. Kaya was shown in the race book as a 3 kg claiming apprentice. As S. Kaya had completed his apprenticeship, a public announcement was made that he was now a senior rider and unable to claim any allowance.

Race 1: Rosemount Estate Australia QTIS Maiden Handicap (1) – 970 metres
1st - TRICKY 2nd – THE CAT’S BACK 3rd – CAT BALLOU 4th – HEY CHEETAH

The start of the event was delayed when the ambulance was late arriving on course.

HEY CHEETAH (S. Kaya) began awkwardly.

ROKU EXPRESS (D. Green) was slow to begin.

CRAZY FOR LOVING (I. Fry) was slow to get into stride.

Apprentice P. Edwards was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the 600 metres she permitted IMA WHITEMAN to shift in when insufficiently clear of THE CAT’S BACK (I. Toward), which was checked and lost its position in the field. Apprentice Edwards was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday, 8th March 2008, up to and including Saturday 15th march 2008 (3NQ meetings).

970 metres
1st - GODWIT 2nd - ANGELRIDER 3rd - ZIVADOR 4th - TOTAL IMPACT

At the start ERIS (Apprentice P. Edwards) shifted out and made contact with ANGELRIDER (L. Morrison), which shifted out and brushed POUND FOR POUND (P. Cullen).

After leaving the barriers BETTY LEE (D. Crossland) commenced to race awkwardly , then commenced to buck and dislodged its rider at about the 850m. After taking evidence from Jockey D. Crossland and Trainer Mr R. Chillemi, stewards barred BETTY LEE until it performs satisfactorily in a jump-out before the stewards and also in an official trial before the stewards at Townsville. Jockey D. Crossland was examined by the Ambulance Officer and passed fit to fulfil his further engagements.

Near the 300 metres ERIS (Apprentice P. Edwards) was shifted out when unable to obtain clear running and momentarily hampered POUND FOR POUND (P. Cullen).

Race 3: Bohle Barn Hotel Class 1 Handicap - 970 metres
1st – IN ABSENTIA 2nd – MENORAH 3rd – MONASHEE WARRIOR 4th – BEAUCAPPA

For the first 100 metres of the event MASKEPORT (Apprentice P. Edwards) raced ungenerously.

Jockey I. Fry reported that MENORAH laid out from the 600 metres.

Over the final 300 metres BEAUCAPPA (C. Eaton) laid in badly, placing its rider at a disadvantage in fully testing her mount.

Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded from slow to dead.

Race 4: www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - COSTA ROMOLO 2nd - SHOWING TERRIFIC 3rd - ACADEMY BOY 4th - CANNY DODGE

At the start GENEROUS GEM (I. Toward) shifted in, taking ONE NIGHT STAND (S. Watkin) in and made contact with the hindquarters of CANNY LODGE (S. Kaya), which twisted that horse out, placing further pressure on ONE NIGHT STAND, which had to be steadied.

On jumping ACADEMY BOY (I. Fry) shifted out, taking PHOTOMETRY (J. Stopps) out onto GRAND LIST (G. Cullen).

Jockey D. Crossland pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R.137(a) in that near the 200 metres he permitted AMEN CORNER to shift out when insufficiently clear of CAPE KINJITE (P. Cullen), which was checked and lost its position in the field. Jockey Crossland was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday 8th March 2008, up to and including Saturday 15th March 2008 (3 NQ meetings).

Race 5: Roux Blond Creative Catering Class 1 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - BRIAN 2nd - PERFECTUS 3rd - HIPPYSHAKE 4th – BLACK WATTLE

On the way to the barriers TIDYS TAIL (S. Oates) reared and dislodged its rider. The start was delayed to allow the Club’s veterinarian to examine the mare, which was passed fit to start.

The start was further delayed when DODGY MISS (G. Cullen) proved difficult to load, broke away from the barrier attendant and pulled off its bridle, which had to be refitted.

At the start BRONZE DESIRE (F. Edwards) was crowded for room between CALL A FRIEND (L. Morrison), which shifted in, and COUNTY WILKES (Apprentice P. Edwards), which shifted out.

In the early stages CALL A FRIEND (L. Morrison) over-raced badly and refused to settle until near the 900 metres.

From near the 850 metres until the 600 metres BRIAN (I. Fry) was inclined to hang out.

Race 6: XXXX Gold Class 3 Plate – 1400 metres
1st – JACOBS TRICK 2nd KAVA 3rd – CARRY THE REGENT 4th – APPELLANT

On jumping MONTE SEE (D. Missen) shifted out, taking APPELLANT (A. Cox) out onto FREMANTLE DOCTOR (Apprentice S. Kaya).

Shortly after the start APPELLANT (A. Cox) ran out and then between the 1000 metres and the 900 metres over-raced.

Race 7: Sky International Class 2 Handicap – 1200 meters
1st – CLEARLOVE 2nd – NAYNAY 3rd – NEXT SIZE UP 4th – DODGE LARRY

After riding NAYNAY in this race Jockey J. Stopps became indisposed and was unable to fulfil his further engagements. Jockey Stopps was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.

UP TO MISCHIEF (S. Kaya) began awkwardly and lost ground.

STAY TRUE (C. Eaton) was slow to begin.

At the start SUPER SHADOW (D. Missen) shifted in and bumped MOTEUR LISSE (I. Fry).

When questioned about the performance of DIAMOND CROSSING, Jockey G. Cullen explained that the gelding raced ungenerously and in his opinion did not handle today’s track conditions.

Race 8: Jupiters Townsville Open Handicap – 1400 meters
1st – SOOTH SAYER 2nd – HIGH PRIORITY 3rd – HEATHROW 4th - MAMELUKE

When J. Stopps was indisposed S. Kaya was substituted as the rider of STONEY PLANET.

When the start was effected FLICK ‘N’ SPIN (P. Cullen) stood flat-footed and was slow to get into stride.

On jumping HIGH PRIORITY (D. Crossland) shifted in and bumped GEOGRAPHICAL (C. Eaton).

In the early stages HIGH PRIORITY (D. Crossland) raced very ungenerously and at about the 1100 metres shifted in and tightened EARS TO VICTORY (D. Green) in onto SOOTH SAYER (S. Watkin), which was over-racing.

At the 600 metres STONEY PLANET (S. Kaya) was unable to obtain clear running.

Approaching the 100 metres HEATHROW (L. Morrison) was held up for a run and had to be shifted to the inside to obtain clear running.

Race 9: Sky Channel Class 5 Handicap – 970 meters
1st – ARCHIE 2nd – TENNESSEE RAINBOW 3rd – LITTLE TOFFY 4th – BRIEF ALLIANCE

When J. Stopps was indisposed S. Watkin was substituted as the rider of KLONDIKE KID.

KLONDIKE KID (S. Watkin) was slow to begin.

At about the 500 metres BRIEF ALLIANCE (G. Cullen) improved up onto heels and had to be steadied.

Race 10: Queensland racing Open Handicap – 970 meters
1st – WALTZ TO GLORY 2nd – VULCAN 3rd – FASLIYITSA 4th - ENZEEL

When J. Stopps was indisposed F. Edwards was substituted as the rider of GREY TURK.

At the start POSTCARD BANDIT (S. Oates) shifted in and bumped ENZEEL (D. Crossland).

Rounding the home turn POSTCARD BANDIT (S. Oates) was unable to obtain a clear run and was shifted to the inside to improve.

At the entrance to the straight FASLIYITSA (I. Fry) shifted out and hampered SMARTY JOHNS (A. Cox). Jockey I. Fry was advised to exercise more care.

Over the concluding stages WALTZ TO GLORY (C. Eaton) laid in under pressure and made contact with VULCAN (Apprentice P. Edwards).
