Race 1: TPI Ladies Auxiliary Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - WHITEWATER 2nd – SHOVNCO 3rd - NORTHERN DUST 4th – HOT DOULTON

ALIKABLE ROGUE (D. Andrews) began awkwardly.

RUMADANE (G. Cullen) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start CIRCUIT CITY (D. Craven) shifted in abruptly, dislodging Jockey D. Craven. Jockey Craven was transported to the Townsville Hospital for observation and was unable to fulfil his further engagements. Riding changes were made as per the stewards summary. Trainer Mr B. Purcell was advised that CIRCUIT CITY must perform to the satisfaction of stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.

Approaching the 1000 metres STARKAZ (J. Long) and GOOYAH (F. Edwards) were placed in restricted room when racing to the inside of NORTHERN DUST (C. Eaton), which shifted in. Leaving the 1000 metres WOODMANS WAY (P. Cullen) shifted in and assumed a position to the outside of NORTHERN DUST, whose rider was unable to alleviate the pressure to the inside runners. As a consequence GOOYAH had to be checked when tightened onto STARKAZ. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey C. Eaton was severely reprimanded and advised that in future she must make a greater effort to prevent her mounts from shifting ground. Jockey P. Cullen was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside.

Leaving the 600 metres RUMADANE (G. Cullen) improved up onto the heels of WHITEWATER (D. Simmons) and had to be steadied.

Near the 500 metres GOOYAH (F. Edwards) commenced to hang out and raced wide for some distance. Trainer Mr B. Purcell was advised that GOOYAH must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.

At about the 200 metres COSTA RICA (J. Felix) laid in and had to be shifted out to improve.

SHOVNCO (G. Kliese) and ALIKABLE ROGUE (D. Andrews) raced wide throughout.

Race 2: TPI Race Day QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap - 1000 metres

BARWON RIVER was a late scratching, at 1.20 p.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Mr. J. Manzelmann was advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to BARWON RIVER being permitted to race again.

WISHFORADIAMOND (A. Spinks) was slow to begin and then raced wide throughout.

TIME BY TIME (C. Eaton) raced wide throughout.

In the early and middle stages KINGSTON BRIDGE (G. Cullen) raced very ungenerously, placing its rider at a disadvantage.

Following the race Jockey P. Cullen reported that GENERAL LEDGER became momentarily unbalanced near the 400 metres.

When questioned about his riding of KALGOORLIE KID, in particular over the final 400 metres, Jockey F. Edwards explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding back in the field and not to attempt to take the horse wide until straightening for home, as was its normal racing pattern. He said that in accordance with those instructions he allowed KALGOORLIE KID to take up a position at the rear of the field, however shortly after straightening for home he committed himself to take a run to the inside of GONZALO (D. Andrews), but was disappointed for that run and elected to shift to the outside of GONZALO. Jockey Edwards said that shortly after this KALGOORLIE KID was again disappointed for clear running when crowded for room between GONZALO and KINGSTON BRIDGE (G. Cullen), which shifted in under pressure, resulting in KALGOORLIE KID going to the line without being fully tested. Trainer Mr E. Sewell confirmed the riding instructions given to Jockey Edwards. Stewards noted the comments of Jockey Edwards. Nevertheless he was advised that as a senior rider he would be expected to ride his mounts in a manner that leaves no room for query.

Approaching the 700 metres ZANZIDIYM (D. Simmons) and LANGFURY (C. Eaton) bumped, resulting in LANGFURY becoming momentarily unbalanced.

Near the 600 metres LANGFURY (C. Eaton) blundered when it improved up onto the heels of SCARE TACTIC (D. Crossland), which shifted in slightly.

At about the 200 metres LANGFURY (C. Eaton) was inconvenienced and was shifted away from the heels of SPLENDOROUS (P. Cullen), which shifted out. When corrected LANGFURY shifted out and became unbalanced on the heels of GYPSY MIST (I. Toward), which shifted in slightly.
