Race 1: Audi Centre Townsville Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st - RED SYMPHONY 2nd – FAIR SWAP 3rd - A L’AMOUR 4th – GOLD SOVEREIGN

RORY’S PEAK was a late scratching, at 11.45 a.m., by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Mr D. Hansen was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to RORY’S PEAK being permitted to race again.

The start was delayed to allow a mechanical fault with the photo finish camera to be remedied.

The start was further delayed when PETUNIAHIWAY became fractious, reared and dislodged its rider, Jockey J. Stephens. PETUNIAHIWAY was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. Subsequently trainer Ms J. Bell was advised that the filly must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to being permitted to race again.

ELUSIVE PRINCE (F. Edwards) and TRIBAL HORSE (D. Crossland) were slow to begin.

Apprentice B. Evans, the rider of RED SYMPHONY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R.137(a) in that approaching the 700 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CANNY JEWEL (I. Toward), which was taken in across the running of A L’AMOUR (M. Carson), which in turn was taken in across the running of BETTAWATCHOUT (G. Cullen), which had to be checked and lost its position in the field. As a result of the incident TRIBAL HORSE (D. Crossland) and BLUE BAYOU (P. Cullen) were inconvenienced and forced wider on the track. Apprentice Evans was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday, 4th July 2009, up to and including midnight on 15th July 2009 (8 meetings).

At the entrance to the straight A L’AMOUR (M. Carson) and LORZY (D. Green) brushed.

Over the final 200 metres FAIR SWAP (J. Murphy) laid out when placed under pressure.

A post-race veterinary examination of BLUE BAYOU (P. Cullen) did not reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 2: www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au QTIS 2-Y-O Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st - LEEZEE 2nd - SMOOTHLY 3rd - MISS BETHEL 4th – GOLDEN QUALO

MISS BETHEL (W. Kenning) was slow to begin and lost considerable ground.

On jumping THECOAT (J. Felix), GOLDEN QUALO (D. Simmons) and CALCURBY (D. Green) were crowded for room between LEEZEE (P. Cullen) and QUICK EMBRACE (F. Edwards), which was taken in by SMOOTHLY (I. Toward).

In the early stages GOLDEN QUALO (D. Simmons) over-raced and then raced wide throughout the event.

Near the 400 metres EL NAVIDAD (App. J. Brown) and HUSK’N’HEARTBREAK (D. Crossland) were tightened for room between MISS BETHEL (W. Kenning) and GOLDEN QUALO (D. Simmons), both of which shifted ground. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey W. Kenning and Jockey D. Simmons were advised to exercise more care.

At about the 200 metres EL NAVIDAD (App. J. Brown) shifted out around the heels of GOLDEN QUALO (D. Simmons) to obtain clear running and in doing so crowded HUSK’N’HEARTBREAK (D. Crossland) out onto JUSTABITOFSILVER (C. Eaton). Apprentice Brown was advised that in future she would be expected to exercise more care.

Approaching the 200 metres QUICK EMBRACE (F. Edwards) was momentarily held up and unable to obtain clear running.

THECOAT (J. Felix) raced wide throughout the event.

Race 3: Jupiters Townsville Cup Day 25 July Class 1 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st - LITTLE ADMIRAL 2nd - KAMBOJA 3rd - ANNUM AL 4th – SCARE TACTIC

TIARASAL (D. Crossland) bled from both nostrils during running and, as this was the first occasion on which the mare had bled, it was barred from racing for three months under A.R.53A.

When the start was effected BONNIE LEADER (J. Stephens) stood flat-footed and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr R. Tapiolas was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to being permitted to race again.

DISNA (J. Felix) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 700 metres SCARE TACTIC (C. Eaton) and KAMBOJA (D. Simmons) were tightened for room when racing to the inside of LITTLE ADMIRAL (G. Cullen), which shifted in. Jockey G. Cullen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Over the concluding stages BAK TAO (D. Simmons) shifted out around the heels of TEAM BONDING (G. Cullen) and in doing so brushed JACKOVA (C. Eaton).

Following the race Jockey J. Murphy reported that at the entrance to the straight the saddle on ANNUM AL slipped forward, placing her at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.

Race 4: TTC 100 Club Raceday Fillies and Mares Class 2 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st – SWEET MARIE 2nd - JESTER’S FLUTE 3rd - BEAUTIFUL MARY 4th – HELLO BOSS

MEDOWIE OPAL was a late scratching, at 9.58 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Ms M. Young was advised that she must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to MEDOWIE OPAL being permitted to race again.

Trainer Mr N. Schofield was fined $100 under L.R. 70(1) for failing to declare J. Stephens as the rider of CLASSY LIL by the prescribed time.

Near the 800 metres CLASSY LIL (J. Stephens), which was over-racing, shifted out, taking VALDA THERESE (C. Eaton) and BEAUTIFUL MARY (D. Ballard) wider. BEAUTIFUL MARY then continued to race wide throughout.

Jockey D. Ballard, the rider of BEAUTIFUL MARY which finished third, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out, at least hands and heels, right out to the finish.

Race 5: Mortgage Choice Class 3 Handicap - 1960 metres
1st - ZEDMATIC 2nd - NO NO A GO GO 3rd - THE CAT’S BACK/ NAPPER TANDY (DH)

On jumping MATAMORE (F. Edwards) and SIR ASHLEY (App. J. Brown) were tightened for room between ZEDMATIC (P. Cullen) and BAK TAO (D. Simmons), both of which shifted ground.

BAK TAO (D. Simmons), SIR ASHLEY (App. J. Brown), and JACKOVA (C. Eaton) raced wide throughout.

Race 6: The Digimen Class 6 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st - PERUGIN THOUGHT 2nd - LITTLE DREAMER 3rd - ALTERNATE 4th – AZZASON

The start was delayed when ALTERNATE (J. Felix) proved difficult to load into the barriers.

AZZASON (D. Simmons) began awkwardly and shifted in.

At the start MONASEECI (P. Cullen) and ON BAIL (I. Toward) bumped when crowded for room between BLAZING ARROW (C. Eaton) and CUPBEARER (M. Carson), both of which shifted ground.

Passing the 500 metres PERUGIN THOUGHT (App. B. Evans) was tightened for room by LITTLE DREAMER (D. Green), which shifted in.

Jockey J. Felix was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the 450 metres he permitted ALTERNATE to shift out around the heels of PERUGIN THOUGHT (App. B. Evans) to obtain clear running when insufficiently clear of CHEYENNE KID (F. Edwards), which was taken out onto MONASEECI (P. Cullen), which was forced out onto ON BAIL (I. Toward), which in turn was taken out onto the hindquarters of LA SALLE (R. Ryan) and had to be checked. Jockey Felix was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday, 4th July 2009, up to and including midnight Saturday, 11th July 2009 (3NQ meetings).

VERY TRICKY was a late scratching, at 8.05 a.m. Trainer Mr D. Hansen was fined $200 under L.R.71 for failing to notify the scratching of the horse by the prescribed time. In assessing penalty stewards took into account the mitigating circumstances put forward by Mr Hansen.

TWO TWENTY SWIFT (D. Crossland) blundered on jumping.

In the early stages HARDACTTOFOLLOW (I. Toward) over-raced. Following the race Jockey I. Toward reported that HARDACTTOFOLLOW was inclined to hang out throughout the event.

When the pace slackened leaving the 1000 metres PROVOCATION (G. Cullen) commenced to over-race and was restrained off the heels of TWO TWENTY SWIFT (D. Crossland). SEA GOING (J. Stephens), which was following, was steadied as a consequence.

GREY ASSETS (C. Eaton) and MICHIGAN (J. Long) raced wide throughout.

A short distance later LESNER was eased when tightened for room between EXPECTING (F. Edwards) and MISTER STEVENS and STARRY DANCER, which continued to shift out.

Jockey D. Crossland pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the 900 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of EXPECTING (F. Edwards), which was forced in onto EAGLE HEIGHTS (App. B. Evans), which was taken in across the running of BEEHIVES (C. Eaton), which was checked and lost its rightful running.
