Race 8: Talbot Heatley Lightning Open Handicap – 1000 metres

When questioned as to the apparently improved performance of STEEL DRAGON, trainer Ms O. Cairns stated that the gelding had been treated for stomach ulcers in the weeks leading into the event, however she was of the view that this had no effect on the performance of STEEL DRAGON. Ms Cairns added that the gelding appreciated the drop in weight and the fact that the race was truly run had contributed to the horse’s improved showing.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

When Apprentice A. Holt was unable to claim his full allowance in Races 1 and 2, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. As App. Holt was also unable to claim his full allowance on THEASHES in Race 3, DEVIL’S BREW in Race 4, LADY BULLMORE in Race 6 and MENDEZ in Race 7, he was fined a total of $300 under A.R. 92(12). In assessing penalty stewards took into account mitigating circumstances.

As Jockey M. Morris was indisposed and unable to fulfil his engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Morris was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.

At the entrance to the straight TOUCH OF ELEGANCE (App. N. Bin Yadi) and STAR SPRAY (T. Bannon) came together.

Jockey M. Elliott, rider of LITTLE ELLIOT which performed poorly, stated that the gelding travelled well until near the 450 metres, but failed to respond to his riding thereafter. Jockey Elliott was of the opinion that LITTLE ELLIOT may have been feeling the effects of recent racing.A post - race veterinary examination of LITTLE ELLIOT did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2: Breakfast With The Stars Wed @ 6 a.m. Class 3 Plate - 1000 Metres
1st – MAKE A DEAL 2nd - PENSKI MATERIAL 3rd – EUREKA DUBAI 4th – PETE THE CLOWN

Race 3: Townsvillp Winter Racing Carnival Class 4 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st – SAINT LENNY 2nd – MOROSSA 3rd – JIFF 4th – THEASHES

THEASHES (App. A. Holt) began awkwardly.

Approaching the 100 metres LEFT STANDING (D. Missen), which was laying out, had to be eased to avoid the heels of SAINT LENNY (A.Coome), which shifted in slightly after obtaining a narrow run between LEFT STANDING and COOLSHOW (W. D’Avila), which also shifted in slightly. Jockey Coome was reprimanded and notified to ensure that he has full galloping room before attempting runs.

When asked about the disappointing performance of ELLE DANSAIT Jockey T. Bannon could offer no explanation other than to say that the mare may have choked down. Jockey Bannon added that she will recommend to connections that they add a tongue-tie to the mare’s approved gear.A post - race veterinary examination of ELLE DANSAIT did not reveal any abnormalities.

Stewards accepted the explanations offered by Mr E. Sewell, trainer of ROCK ALERT, Ms O. Cairns, trainer of DISCOVER THE GOLD, TUPPENY’S OPINION and AVGAS, and Mr B. Williams, trainer of FINROD, for the late notification of riders.

As Jockey F. Edwards was to be overweight and no other rider was available, stewards permitted Jockey Edwards to ride DISCOVER THE GOLD 1kg overweight.

On jumping, THAT’S WHAT I WANT (A. Merritt) was hampered when tightened for room between ROCK ALERT (I. Toward) and MENDEZ (App. A. Holt), which shifted in.

Rounding the home turn and until near the 200 metres WATTLE BRAVE (P. Cullen) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Approaching the 100 metres ROCK ALERT (I. Toward) was taken out slightly by BRANDY BEAU (M. Elliott). Shortly after this ROCK ALERT continued to shift out and tightened MENDEZ (App. A.
