SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: Townsville 17th August 2012

Race 6: Ladies in Racing Magazine Class 1 Handicap – 1200 metres

Stewards resumed an inquiry into the tactics adopted on AL SAMUI. Today stewards took further evidence from Jockey W. D’Avila and took evidence from trainer Mr P. McGuire. Mr Maguire informed stewards that he was satisfied with Jockey D’Avila’s ride. Jockey D’Avila stated to Stewards that he was instructed by Mr. McGuire to lead, however after missing the start he was then content to settle well off the pace and felt it was in the best interests of his mount to sit quiet and not apply any pressure until the entrance to the straight. D’Avila was advised that in the opinion of the stewards he should have made more of an effort to improve his position after passing the 500 metres in an attempt to become closer to the main body of the field,so as to capitalise on a run should one appear. D’Avila was severely reprimanded and notified that in future he would be expected to ride all his mounts in a manner so as to leave no room for query.

LATE RIDING CHANGES

When Jockey D. Missen was ill and unable to fulfil his engagements and Jockey A. Coome was unable to fulfil his engagements for personal reasons, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Missen was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.

Race 1: Book A Function @ Cluden Park Benchmark 70 Handicap – 1960 metres
1st – PROVINCIAL 2nd – FASTER BUSTER 3rd – IT’S JUST LAGO 4th – PACIFIC HIGHWAY

The start of the race was delayed when the saddle on WHY NOT NOW (S. Pawsey) had to be adjusted at the barriers.

Near the 300 metres PACIFIC HIGHWAY (App. B. Swaffer), when attempting a run to the outside of the heels of PROVINCIAL (C. Whiteley), made heavy contact with RAIN GAME (L. Morrison). As a result Apprentice Swaffer had to stop riding and ease his mount to avoid the heels of PROVINCIAL.

Following the race it was noted that WESTERN CLASSIC (F. Edwards) had bled from both nostrils. Trainer Ms O. Cairns was advised that, as this was the first occasion on which the gelding had bled, WESTERN CLASSIC will be barred from racing for 3 months under A.R. 53A.

Race 2: www.townsvilleamateurs.com. Maiden Handicap - 1630 Metres
1st - ZAHMATAS ADJOURNED 2nd - SPURPARTS 3rd – CASINOJEAN 4th – STAR SPRAY

The declaration of correct weight was delayed when, on returning to scale STAR SPRAY (F. Edwards), which finished fourth, was found to have carried less weight than it should have carried. Acting under the provisions of A.R. 143, stewards disqualified STAR SPRAY for the race and correct weight was declared on the amended placings of: 1st ZAHMATAS ADJOURNED; 2nd SPURPARTS; 3rd CASINOJEAN; 4th MR GOLD. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey Edwards pleaded guilty to a breach of A.R. 143 and was fined $750.

CITING (S. Pawsey) began awkwardly and lost ground.

Near the 1100 metres SPURPARTS (W. D’Avila) was hampered when tightened for room between GET BACK JOJO (L. Morrison) and STAR SPRAY (F. Edwards), both of which shifted ground slightly.

After leaving the 1000 metres MR GOLD (C. Whiteley) hung in, and continued to do so for the remainder of the race.

Near the 800 metres CITING (S. Pawsey) got its head up when being eased.

From the entrance to the straight until near the 100 metres JEWELS ‘n’ SHOES (S. Kaya) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Race 3: Townsville Amateurs This Weekend Benchmark 75 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – MAGIC COUNTRY 2nd – PEOPLE’S CHOICE 3rd – RICOCHET MOUNTAIN 4th – JUDICIAL

When Jockey L. Morrison was to be overweight, Jockey W. D’Avila was substituted as the rider of JUDICIAL. Jockey Morrison was fined $100 under A.R. 120(b).

Shortly after the start App. B. Swaffer, the rider of BEURRE, lost the use of his nearside iron before regaining it approaching the 800 metres. As a result BEURRE lost considerable ground.

Near the 600 metres LEGAL POSITION (I. Toward) had to be eased when tightened for room between JUDICIAL (W. D’Avila), which shifted out slightly whilst laying out.

At the 300 metres LEGAL POSITION (I. Toward) had to change course and shift to the outside of RICOCHET MOUNTAIN (R. Edwards) to obtain clear running.

Race 4: www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap – 1200 metres

At the entrance to the straight BAR ATTACK (App. B. Swaffer) shifted out and brushed MANUMIT (S. Pawsey).

Race 5: Book Now For Amateurs Maiden Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – LOVELY WITCH 2nd – AL MADAM 3rd – STRICTLY AMAZING 4th – DEVIL IN ME

Shortly after the start YOU MAY SAY (L. Morrison) and STRICTLY AMAZING (S. Kaya) were hampered when tightened for room between BRIGHTVIEW BOMBER (App. B. Swaffer), which shifted out slightly, and BROSEF (F.Edwards), which shifted in slightly. A short distance later BROSEF shifted out slightly and tightened the running of DEVIL IN ME (I. Toward), which was taken out onto TSUIMAI WARRIOR (M. Elliott).

Jockey L. Morrison, the rider of YOU MAY SAY which was having its first race start, stated that her mount raced greenly throughout the event and in the straight laid in.

Race 6: XXXX Gold Class 1 Plate – 1200 metres
1st – FRENCH LESSON 2nd – PANECILLO 3rd – POSITIVE VIBES 4th – STIEG

Stewards will interview trainer Mr R. Snelling as to the reason for the late notification of App. B. Swaffer as the rider for POSITIVE VIBES.

En route to the barriers App. B. Swaffer was dislodged from POSITIVE VIBES and suffered a harmless fall. POSITIVE VIBES then cantered for a short distance before being recaptured. After arriving behind the barriers POSITIVE VIBES was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.

DANE WILL DO (C. Whiteley) hung out from leaving the 900 metres until the entrance to the straight.

Near the 200 metres RATSTAN (P. Cullen) shifted out and brushed POSITIVE VIBES (App. B. Swaffer).

Over the concluding stages RATSTAN (P. Cullen) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Approaching the winning post TWIZZLE (S. Pawsey) had to be eased when disappointed for a run between PASSIN’ THRU (I. Toward) and CANDY MOMENT (L. Morrison).
