ADJOURNED INQUIRY:

Stewards resumed an inquiry, opened at the Mackay Turf Club on 26th June 2012, into the reason for Jockey J. Felix being dislodged from BEAR IN THERE near the 1400 metres in Race 6, Black’s Real Estate H.L. Black Memorial Handicap over 1560 metres. Today stewards took evidence from Jockey Felix and Jockey D. Simmons, the rider of OUR BOY LUKAS, and viewed the official video films of the incident. The inquiry was then adjourned until Tuesday 9th October 2012 to enable stewards to interview Jockey A. Coome.

LATE RIDING CHANGES

When Jockey A. Coome was indisposed and unable to fulfil his engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Coome was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.

Race 1: Pallarenda Stakes Raceday 16 October QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – SOCIAL SUICIDE 2nd – FLIGHT TO GLORY 3rd – KELLIE BE GOOD 4th – COLLIDE

Prior to the race connections of RAINBOW ROSE informed stewards that the filly, which usually raced in a forward position, will be ridden quieter today. Public announcements were made to that effect and the filly was ridden accordingly.

SLEETING (P. Cullen) was slow to begin.

Near the 800 metres COLLIDE (G. Kliese), which was racing tight to the inside of RAINBOW ROSE (F. Edwards), brushed the running rail, shifted out , became unbalanced and made contact with RAINBOW ROSE, which also became unbalanced.

Race 2: 102.3 4TO FM Maiden Plate - 1200 Metres
1st - DE LEONE 2nd - COUNTESS MONPEZAT 3rd – LA LIONESSE 4th – DEVIL IN ME

WINDSOR GOLD (A. Merritt) began awkwardly and then in the early stages was unable to muster any speed.

Near the 750 metres DE LEONE (G. Kliese) shifted in slightly, made contact with the running rail and shifted out, resulting in DEVIL IN ME (A. Spinks), which was racing to the outside of DE LEONE, over-reacting, becoming unbalanced and shifting wider on the track.

Race 3: The Coffee Club Class 1 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – CARBINCONI 2nd – LEGLESIA 3rd – VALERA 4th – TOUCH OF ELEGANCE

Jockey D. Simmons was reprimanded under A.R. 142 for failing to weigh in after riding CANDY MOMENT into 5th place.

On jumping MENDEZ (S. Pawsey) had to be checked when tightened for room between STAUNCH NORTH (App. B. Swaffer) and TOUCH OF ELEGANCE (A. Spinks), which shifted in and away from LEGLESIA (F. Edwards).

Soon after the start CLUES (W. D’Avila) shifted out and tightened FATAL AFFAIR (J. Babarovich) and STROM THE RHYTHM (M. Elliott).

Near the 800 metres BEAUX STRATA (G. Kliese) made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.

CLUES (W. D’Avila) and CANDY MOMENT (D. Simmons) raced wide throughout.

Race 4: Townsville Vet Clinic Benchmark 75 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – FALLS CREEK 2nd – DUX BELLORUM 3rd – PEOPLE’S CHOICE 4th – CAMPHOR

There were no racing incidents.

Race 5: Core Developments NQ Class 2 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ARCATRAN 2nd – PROWLER 3rd – EXAGGERATION 4th – MASTER MORGAN

DECADERO was a late scratching, at 2.10 p.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer B. Hetherington was advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to DECADERO being permitted to race again.

MISS LIBERTY (P. Cullen) began awkwardly.

Near the 200 metres ACCORDING TO REX (A. Merritt) had to be steadied when crowded for room by TALCUM (App. B. Swaffer), which shifted in. MISS LIBERTY (P. Cullen), which was following, had to be steadied in consequence. App. Swaffer was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is clear of other runners before shifting ground.

Race 6: Mac’s Amusements & Prestige Costume Hire Open Handicap Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – GO FOREST GO 2nd – RATTUS CONATUS 3rd APACHE PUP – 4th – WANDERING STAR

OURQUESTRO (S. Pawsey) was slow to begin.

Near the 1000 metres BUDABAR (A. Spinks) was steadied to avoid the heels of WANDERING STAR (F. Edwards), which shifted in slightly. Jockey Edwards was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Near the 200 metres BUDABAR (A. Spinks) was disappointed for a run between WANDERING STAR (F. Edwards) and APACHE PUP (T. Bannon). Shortly after this BUDABAR shifted to the inside of WANDERING STAR to obtain clear running.

Race 7: Pat Molloy Jewellers Benchmark 70 Handicap – 1630 metres
1st - FORZA POTENZA 2nd - DIVINE LUCK 3rd - VANTABULOUS 4th -
WHATZAHMATA

After arriving on course BIANCO ROSSA, which travelled badly in the float en route to the track, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.

DIVINE LUCK (App. N. Bin Yadi) slipped behind on jumping and as a consequence lost considerable ground.

FORZA POTENZA (S. Pawsey) and STARTUS (T. Bannon) were slow to begin.

Stewards sought an explanation from Apprentice B. Swaffer for the tactics he adopted and his riding of PROVINCIAL. App. Swaffer stated that he had been instructed to ride PROVINCIAL midfield or better, however after being somewhat tardy to begin, he elected to follow BIANCO ROSSA (G. Kliese) as he was of the opinion that this would take him into a suitable place in the field. App. Swaffer said, however, that BIANCO ROSSA also got further back than had been expected. Trainer J. Manzelmann confirmed the instructions given to App. Swaffer and was surprised when the gelding got well back in the field. Mr Manzelmann expressed his disappointment with App. Swaffer’s riding of the horse. Jockey G. Kliese, who represented
App. Swaffer in the absence of the apprentice’s master, Mr T. Rowe, commented that he also got further back than had been intended and was unable to improve when ZEDMATIC (P. Cullen) lost contact with the first half of the field.and held up the remainder of the field in the middle stages, placing him further out of his ground than had been expected. Stewards notified Apop. Swaffer that in their opinion he had erred in his riding of PROVINCIAL. Stewards accepted that the gelding had been slow to start, but were of the opinion that App. Swaffer should have made a greater effort to take up a midfield position in accordance with his instructions. App. Swaffer was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to show more initiative and endeavour to ride in a manner that leaves no room for query.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BESWABBED and pre-race samples were taken from DE LEONE, DRAGONS BLETCH, MISS LIBERTY, and VANTABULOUS
