Race 1: J. BAR Class 6 Plate - 1400 metres
1st – JUST HUSTLED 2nd – WILL IMPRESS 3rd – SHOWMETHEMONEY 4th – GRAND SILENCE
Stewards considered an objection lodged by trainer D. Symons, the trainer of SHOWMETHEMONEY (T. Bannon) which finished 3rd, against JUST HUSTLED (W. D’Avila) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 150 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the official patrol videos and taking into account their own observations, stewards dismissed the protest when they found that near the 150 metres JUST HUSTLED shifted in when not clear, resulting in SHOWMETHE MONEY having to be checked and shift across heels. However, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the margin between the two horses at the finish warranted an alteration to the placings. Correct weight was then declared on the numbers semaphored. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey D’Avila pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 150 metres he permitted JUST HUSTLED to shift in resulting in SHOWMETHEMONEY being tightened for room and checked to avoid the heels of JUST HUSTLED. Jockey D’Avila was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 NQ meetings, to commence at midnight 8th December 2012 up to and including midnight on 18th December 2012.
MY NAME IS EARL (P. Cullen) began awkwardly.
In the early and middle stages SHOWMETHEMONEY (T. Bannon) over-raced and near the 1000 metres was tightened for room by BLAST OUT OF HERE (F. Edwards), which shifted in. Jockey F. Edwards was reprimanded. SHOWMETHEMONEY then continued to over-race at the heels of BLAST OUT OF HERE until near the 800 metres.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight SHOWMETHEMONEY (T. Bannon) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
GRAND SILENCE (M. Elliott) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Upon returning to scale Jockey P. Cullen reported that MY NAME IS EARL got its tongue over the bit during the event and proved difficult to control, therefore the horse raced in a more forward position than he had anticipated.
Race 2: AQUA Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate - 1200 Metres
1st – EIREANN 2nd - COSSOTTO 3rd – FRAMES 4th – CARE TO SHARE
Whilst parading behind the barriers FESTIVAL BALLET (P. Cullen) was kicked by another runner. The mare was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and, acting on his advice that FESTIVAL BALLET was unfit to take its place in the field, stewards ordered the withdrawal of FESTIVAL BALLETE at 2.54 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on FESTIVAL BALLET be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:
27¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, EIREANN
29¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, EIREANN
29¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, COSSOTTO
COSSOTTO (W. D’Avila), FRAMES (K. Stone) and CARE TO SHARE (T. Bannon) began awkwardly.
Near the 1000 metres CARE TO SHARE (T. Bannon) improved onto the heels of EIREANN (F. Edwards) and had to be eased. COSSOTTO (W. D’Avila) which was following also had to be steadied in consequence.
In the early stages COSSOTTO (W. D’Avila) over-raced and in the middle stages hung out.
Stewards questioned trainer E. Sewell in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the winner, EIREANN. Mr Sewell advised that at its most recent start, at Townsville on 7 August 2012, the filly was eased out of the race by its rider who was of the opinion that something was amiss with EIREANN. Subsequent to the event the filly was found to be shin sore. Mr Sewell added that, based on this advice, he immediately spelled the filly, which today was having its first start following that spell. Mr Sewell said that the filly had performaed satisfactorily in a jump-out leading up to today’s event and whilst he had expected a forward showing, he had been somewhat surprised by the horse’s win. The explanation was noted.
Race 3: KOBE Open Handicap - 1200 metres
1st – REPROBATE 2nd – KAMBOJA 3rd – MIGHTY MITE 4th – MAZUKA
Stewards accepted the explanation for Jockey W. D’Avila being dually engaged, for MAZUKA and POPNAE. Jockey M. Elliott was substituted as the rider of POPNAE.
Near the 1000 metres JUDICIAL (P. Cullen), whilst racing keenly, improved onto the heels of
POPNAE (M. Elliott) and was forced to ease.
Approaching the 300 metres MIGHTY MITE (I. Toward) was momentarily tightened for room between JUDICIAL (P. Cullen) and REPROBATE (App. B. Swaffer), both of which shifted ground.
Jockey M. Elliott was fined $100 under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on POPNAE more than 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100 metres.
Race 4: Spin Café Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Plate – 1200 metres
1st – COLOURADO 2nd – RUNABOUT 3rd – TAIYO SILVER AWAY 4th – ESCONDEE
At the start RAY’S ROCKET (P. Cullen) lost ground when tightened for room between PASSION AND POWER (W. D’Avila) and TAIYO SILVER AWAY (T. Bannon), both of which shifted ground.
In the early stages COLOURADO (G. Kliese) and ALONG CAME JOHNNY (A. Merritt) raced ungenerously.
For a considerable distance after leaving the 1000 metres RAY’S ROCKET (P. Cullen) was restrained to avoid the heels of PASSION AND POWER (W. D’Avila). A post-race veterinary examination of PASSION AND POWER which finished in a rearward position, did not reveal any abnormalities.
Rounding the home turn RUNABOU T (I. Toward) laid out and made contact with COLOURADO (G. Kliese).
Race 5: ESSENCE Class 3 Plate – 1630 metres
1st – GOGO DELAGO 2nd – MR GIFFORD 3rd – TOYHERO 4th – BLACK SEQUIN
The start was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.
In the early stages MR GIFFORD (P. Cullen) raced ungenerously whilst being restrained.
Race 6: Jupiters Townsville Class 4 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – DAILIKA 2nd – OAKFIELD BELLE 3rd – PENSKI MATERIAL 4th – SMUTTY JOHNS
The start was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.
Shortly after the start PENSKI MATERIAL (App. B. Swaffer) and STIEG (I. Toward) bumped on a number of occasions.
PARIS ICON (M. Elliott) began awkwardly.
Shortly after the finish App. B. Swaffer was dislodged from PENSKI MATERIAL and suffered a harmless fall.
