SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
Cairns Jockey Club, Sunday 11th August 2013
Race 1: Cooktown Amateur Turf QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap, 1250m:
Stewards today resumed an inquiry, opened at the above meeting, into the reason for Jockey W. D’Avila, the rider of KANA AKA, and Apprentice B. Swaffer, the rider of STANFORD, being dislodged from their respective mounts. Today stewards took evidence from Jockey W. D’Avila and took further evidence from App. B. Swaffer, App. N. Yadi and trainer F. Weiland, the master of App. Yadi. Stewards established that near the 1000 metres DRAGON SIGN (App. N. Yadi) shifted out minimally when commencing the turn out of the back straight and as a result KANA AKA, which was closely positioned on the heels of DRAGON SIGN, clipped that runner’s heels and fell. Stewards further established that App. Swaffer was dislodged from STANFORD, which blundered after making contact with the fallen KANA AKA. Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the actions of App. Yadi were careless at that stage of the race and no action was taken in respect of the matter.
Townsville, Tuesday 10th September 2013:
Race 2: - Like Us On Facebook BM 75 Handicap – 1400m
Subsequent to the race trainer T. Butts reported that SAFARI had sustained a significant pelvic injury and as such has now been retired from racing.

Late Riding changes:
When Jockey M. Elliott was ill and unable to fulfil his riding engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey M. Elliott was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.
As Jockey A. Coome was to be overweight for his engagements in Races 2 and 6, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey A. Coome was
fined a total of $200 under A.R. 120(b).
Race 1: - Rock ‘N’ Rodz Festival This Saturday Class 6 Plate – 1000 metres
1st – TYSON RULES 2nd – BESIEGED 3rd – DAILIKA 4th – QUEEN THYRA
On returning to scale App. J. Kuskopf reported to stewards that, despite her urgings, in the early stages SHADOW LINE failed to show the pace it had shown at its most recent start, at Townsville on 10th September over 1200 metres. App. Kuskopf added that whilst in her opinion the mare made ground over the concluding stages, it was not suited by backing up within a short time after its previous start.
At the start SHADOW LINE bounded in the air.
After being caught wide in the early stages, CARLTON FORWARD (T. Bannon) was restrained and obtained a position one off the running rail near the 700 metres.
Stewards questioned trainer Mr A. Cameron in relation to the seemingly improved performance of TYSON RULES (A. Dykes). Mr Cameron advised that at its most recent start, at Mackay on 20th August, where the gelding finished last, TYSON RULES pulled up in a distressed state, which he attributed to the horse being a poor sweater on what was a hot day. Mr Cameron added that since that start he has freshened up the gelding and its work had been quite satisfactory and, based on the horse’s previous form prior to the Mackay race, he had expected it to be very competitive today. The explanation was noted.
Race 2: - www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au 3-Y-O Handicap – 1200 Metres
1st – HOT SAGA 2nd - DRAGON SIGN 3rd – DAZZLE ON 4th – BINCENTA
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer F. Wieland in relation to the late nomination and subsequent scratching of GEESIX from this event.
HOT SAGA (D. Simmons) began awkwardly, then raced 3 wide throughout.
Near the 900 metres DRAGON SIGN (D. Hayse) shifted out after making contact with the running rail whilst being restrained, resulting in SEVEN RED (F. Edwards), which was racing to the outside, clipping the heels of that runner and blundering. As a result, DAZZLE ON (W. D’Avila), which was racing back and to the inside of SEVEN RED, also clipped heels and blundered at that stage. Stewards were of the opinion that the racing characteristics of DRAGON SIGN had been the major contributing factor to the incident and consequently no further action was taken.
Race 3: - Rock ‘N’ Rodz Nostalgia Festival Class 5 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – BAR ATTACK 2nd – CLEAVER 3rd – CARAVAN SANG 4th – ARCATRAN
At the start CARAVAN SANG (App. E. Ljung) and CLEAVER (P. Cullen) were tightened for room between JAM FANCY (G. Kliese) and ARCATRAN (M. Cullen), which shifted out. As a result CLEAVER lost ground.
After being crossed by JAM FANCY in the early stages, BAR ATTACK (App. B. Swaffer) raced ungenerously while being restrained.
Upon returning to scale Jockey P. Cullen reported that after being hampered at the start CLEAVER settled at the rear of the field, in accordance with the gelding’s normal racing pattern. Jockey Cullen added that the gelding made significant ground over the concluding stages and in his opinion at this stage of its preparation will be more suited in races over greater distances than the 1300 metres of today’s event.
Stewards questioned Jockey G. Kliese in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of JAM FANCY. Jockey Kliese advised that after beginning well he was able to obtain a leading position on the gelding and travelled comfortably for the majority of the event. Jockey Kliese stated that despite being placed under pressure by other runners after leaving the 700 metres the gelding still travelled strongly rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight, however when placed under significant pressure failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer A. Cameron expressed his disappointment with the gelding and was at a loss to understand the poor showing as the gelding had worked well in the lead-up to today’s event. Mr Cameron advised that at its next race starts he may alter the tactics of the gelding as in his opinion the horse races somewhat better when ridden off the pace. Stewards noted the explanation and informed Mr Cameron that if he alters the racing tactics of the gelding, he should advise the stewards accordingly, prior to the event. A post-race veterinary examination of JAM FANCY did not reveal any abnormality.
Race 4: – Pat Molloy Jewellers Class 2 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – LITTLE DUCATI 2nd – EXCAPISHE 3rd – EXCEEDED 4th – PATTO’S GIRL
Prior to the race patrons were advised that EXCEEDED (F. Edwards) raced at Charters Towers on Saturday last, 14th September 2013 in a Class 2 Handicap over 1200m, ran third of 5 beaten 1.4 lengths and carried 55.5kg.
Stewards gave permission for PATTO’S GIRL (App. J. Kuskopf) to race with pacifiers instead of blinkers today, on the assurance by trainer B. Snelling that this was the approved gear for the mare. Stewards will make further inquiries with the Trainers Service Centre in relation to the matter.
The start was delayed when EXCEEDED (F. Edwards) required re-saddling in the enclosure, which resulted in the gelding being late arriving at the barriers.
WOOLGAR ROAD (W. D’Avila) began awkwardly, shifted out and made heavy contact with LITTLE DUCATI (App. E. Ljung), which lost ground and settled further back in the field than was anticipated.
Leaving the 200 metres DECADENT (App. S. Wiseman) was disappointed for a run between WOOLGAR ROAD and PATTO’S GIRL, both of which shifted ground. As a result, DECADENT was forced to shift to the inside in an attempt to obtain clear running over the concluding stages.
WOOLGAR ROAD raced wide throughout.
Jockey W. D’Avila, the rider of WOOLGAR ROAD, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the finish.
Race 5: – Office Choice Pen to Paper Maiden Plate – 1300 metres
1st – DASH OF BLACK 2nd – SHERIDAN 3rd – SEQUALO SUZIE 4th – COUNTESS MONPEZAT
NAGA VIPER (App. B. Swaffer) began awkwardly and lost ground.
MANUMIT (App. J. Kuskopf) blundered on jumping away.
In the early stages SHERIDAN (App. S.Wiseman) raced ungenerously while being restrained.
On returning to scale Jockey D. Hayse reported that he had intended to ride DASH OF BLACK further back in the field today, however when there was a distinct lack of pace in the early stages, he allowed the gelding to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader.
Stewards questioned App. B. Swaffer in relation to the tactics adopted on NAGA VIPER, whereby after being slow to begin he allowed the gelding to stride forward around the field in a 3-wide position from the 900 metres. App. Swaffer said that he intended to take up a midfield position, however after beginning awkwardly and losing ground at the start, he was obliged to race further back in the field than he had anticipated. App. Swaffer advised that approaching the 900 metres SHERIDAN (App. S. Wiseman), which was racing directly in front of him, raced ungenerously and at that stage he improved onto the heels of that runner, and accordingly he elected to shift to the outside of SHERIDAN. App. Swaffer said further that he was instructed by trainer T. Rowe prior to the event to allow NAGA VIPER to race where it was comfortable and not restrain the gelding heavily throughout the event, as Mr Rowe is of the opinion that NAGA VIPER races better when ridden in that manner. App. Swaffer added that though an opportunity may have presented itself to restrain NAGA VIPER and maintain a position behind SHERIDAN, he preferred to allow NAGA VIPER to stride forward into the race in an endeavour to conform with his instructions. App. Swaffer added that though the gelding made ground comfortably around the outside of the field throughout the event, over the concluding stages NAGA VIPER tired and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. The explanations were noted.
Race 6: – Soil Engineering Services Class 1 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – FAST ‘N’ SHARP 2nd – HEART OF STRENGTH 3rd – BIGHORN 4th – DANE WILL DO
Shortly after the start MONACO VALE (F. Edwards) lost ground when tightened for room between CANDY MOMENT (S.Wilson) and BIGHORN (I. Toward), which was taken out by JUST BLING (App. S. Wiseman), which shifted out after beginning awkwardly.
Near the 600 metres JUST BLING was tightened for room and forced across the heels of CANDY MOMENT when BARRIER JET (T. Bannon) hung out, despite the efforts of its rider. As a result JUST BLING clipped the heels of CANDY MOMENT, blundered and lost ground. Stewards were mindful that the incident was one of some significance, however when considering the matter they were of the view that the racing manners of BARRIER JET, along with a slight shift inwards by CANDY MOMENT, were the major contributing factors to the incident and therefore no further action was taken.
Race 7: - A. E. Smith North Queensland Class 3 Plate – 1400 metres
1st – ROCK ALERT 2nd – MADE IN AMERICA 3rd – STAUNCH NORTH 4th – BRAVE PALATINSK
The start was delayed when, after the horses were loaded into the barriers, a large flock of birds had to be removed from the vicinity of the track.
MISS MAGIC CHINE (W. D’Avila) began awkwardly and then raced wide throughout.
Shortly after the start BRAVE PALATINSK (App. B. Swaffer) was forced to steady to avoid the heels of THIRTY THREE LARGE (App. N. Yadi), which was taken in by TUTUDUMONDE (F. Edwards), which shifted in whilst not completely clear.
Near the 500 metres MASTER INVADER (App. E. Ljung) hung out and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ROCK ALERT (A. Coome).
Jockey I. Toward was fined $100 under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on STAUNCH NORTH more than 5 times in a forward manner prior to the 100 metres. When considering penalty stewards took into account Jockey Toward’s good record in relation to this rule.
Stewards questioned Jockey F. Edwards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of TUTUDUMONDE. Jockey Edwards said that after beginning well the mare obtained a forward position in the event, which is its customary racing pattern. Jockey Edwards added that the mare travelled comfortably throughout the event, however when placed under pressure on the home turn and in the home straight failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. Jockey Edwards stated that on returning to scale he advised trainer O. Cairns that in his opinion the mare may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer O. Cairns expressed her disappointment with the performance of TUTUDOMONDE and advised stewards that the mare will be sent for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed that TUTUMONDE had sustained a mild laceration to the off hind heel.
