Race 1: - Ross Real Estate Maiden Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – DANCING HUSSAR 2nd – CHARLIE’S MOMENT 3rd – DUBAI ME A STAR 4th – STAR TRUCE
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer B. Williams for the late declaration of Jockey S. Lanigan as the rider of LADY SAGA.

DUBAI ME A STAR (C. Whiteley) began awkwardly and lost considerable ground.

STAR TRUCE (F. Edwards) and OAKFIELD AVENGER (D. Hayse) made contact on jumping.

At the 1200 metres LADY SAGA (S. Lanigan) was forced to check when tightened for room between MANUMIT (S. Wilson), which shifted out, and STAR TRUCE (F. Edwards), which shifted in and away from OAKFIELD AVENGER (D. Hayse). As a consequence LADY SAGA shifted out when being checked and made contact with CHAIR AS WELL (D. Simmons).

Near the 1200 metres SEQUALO SUZIE (App. E. Ljung) and YOUNG BASIL (A. Dykes) were both tightened for room when racing between OAXACA (J. Babarovich) and MANUMIT, which shifted in when not completely clear. Shifted out at 1200m tightening another runner. Shifted in when not completely. clear Jockey Wilson was reprimanded as a result of the incident.

When placed under pressure in the home straight LADY SAGA had a tendency to lay out.

Approaching the finish line CHAIR AS WELL was momentarily tightened for room between OAKFIELD AVENGER and MANUMIT, which shifted in marginally.

On returning to scale Jockey C. Whiteley reported to the stewards that after losing considerable ground at the start he was forced to ride DUBAI ME A STAR at the rear of the field. Jockey Whiteley further advised that the mare made strong ground around the outside of the field in the home straight and that he had informed trainer J. Manzelmann that in his opinion the mare was looking for races over a greater distance than the 1300 metres of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of DUBAI ME A STAR revealed that the mare was mildly lame in the near foreleg and had sustained a small laceration to the near hind leg.

Following the event Jockey D. Hayse reported to stewards that from its wide barrier OAKFIELD AVENGER was forced to do some work in the early stages to assume its customary forward position. Jockey Hayse said that through the middle stages the gelding never travelled strongly and when placed under pressure in the home straight failed to respond to his riding and proved somewhat disappointing. Jockey Hayse added that following the event he reported to trainer Mr G. Dickson that the gelding raced greenly today and may benefit from a freshen-up following today’s performance.

A post-race veterinary examination of NORTHERN EXCAVATOR (A. Lawrence), which raced tailed off throughout, did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer B. Hetherington was advised that, in view of the disappointing performance of the gelding, its nomination will be refused for TAB meetings until it establishes competitive form in non-TAB events.

Race 2: - Wilson Ryan Grose Lawyers Class 1 Handicap – 1200 Metres
1st – DICHOTOMY 2nd - MIATA 3rd – STRADIVARI MISS 4th – MOLONGLE DASH

FLAG FAVOURITE (A. Lawrence) shifted in at the start and made contact with ERNEST ALBERT (F. Edwards) and consequently lost ground.

From the 350 metres until approaching the 100 metres LITTLEMISSPERFECT (C. Whiteley) was held up for clear running and unable to improve.

Approaching the 100 metres WOOLGAR ROAD (D. Hayse) was tightened for room between STRADIVARI MISS (D. Simmons) and HAILING (App. S. Wiseman), which was taken in by MOLONGLE DASH (M. Cullen).

AL SAMUI (J. Felix) lost a near hind plate in running.

Jockey F. Edwards was reprimanded under A.R. 142 for failing to weigh in after riding ERNEST ALBERT into 5th place.

Race 3: - Jewellery By Design – JBD Class 5 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – EUREKA DUBAI 2nd – SEEK DE FORTUNE 3rd – SCIROCCO 4th – LITTLE DUCATI

AVADALE was a late scratching, at 8.27 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.

Upon arriving behind the barriers PATTO’S GIRL became fractious and dislodged Apprentice J. Kuskopf, who had a harmless fall. PATTO’S GIRL was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its placed in the field.

EUREKA DUBAI (D. Hayse) jumped in the air at the start.

Near the 700 metres SEEK DE FORTUNE (App. E. Ljung) improved into a narrow run between BESIEGED (J. P. Stanley) and SIMPLE TASK (J. Felix), and as a result was forced to check when SIMPLE TASK shifted in marginally.

On returning to scale Jockey J. P. Stanley reported to stewards that BESIEGED felt short in its action. A post-race veterinary examination of BESEIGED did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned as to the performance of LITTLE DUCATI, App. S. Wiseman advised stewards that the mare travelled well throughout, however after rounding the home turn was held up for clear running, so she elected to shift to the inside of runners with a view to gaining a clear run. App. Wiseman said that the mare was reluctant to improve to the inside of SCIROCCO SAN (F. Edwards) and did not race comfortably in that position. App. Wiseman added that in the latter stages when able to obtain clear running to the outside, LITTLE DUCATI ran on strongly. Stewards noted the explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4: – Bambini Espresso QTIS 3-Years-Old Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – McCONACHY 2nd – TALK TOUGH 3rd – SWEET ASA ROSE 4th – SEVEN SAGAS

TYPHOON ANNIE was a late scratching, at 9.15 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.

Jockey F. Edwards, the rider of McCONACHY, was fined $100 under A.R. 140A for negligently failing to weigh out with irons.

Rounding the home turn SWEET ASA ROSE (App. S. Wiseman) shifted out, made contact with JAYHAWK (App. E. Ljung) and became unbalanced.

From the 300 metres until leaving the 200 metres McCONACHY (F. Edwards) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Near the 200 metres BUCKANARA (P. Cullen) was forced to steady to avoid the heels of SEVEN SAGAS (M. Cullen), which shifted in. Jockey M. Cullen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Race 5: – Loloma Jewellers BM65 Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – FILLE VILAINE 2nd – PROUD WARRIOR 3rd – DAMASHQUI 4th – CASHED UP BULLY

CASHED UP BULLY (C. Whiteley) and WHY NOT NOW (P. Cullen) raced ungenerously and threw their heads about in the early stages.

FILLE VILAINE (J. P. Stanley), which was racing keenly, improved forward from the 1000 metres and assumed a position outside the leader near the 800 metres.

Near the 600 metres ZIP THE LIP (App. S. Wiseman) shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of CASHED UP BULLY.

In the early part of the straight BARELY AN ANGEL (A. Dykes) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

BARRIER JET (D. Simmons) was held up for clear running from near the 400 metres until approaching the 200 metres.

WHY NOT NOW (P. Cullen) was held up and unable to obtain clear running for the majority of the home straight and then near the 100 metres was forced to shift out to improve.

Stewards questioned Apprentice S. Wiseman as to the disappointing performance of ZIP THE LIP. App. Wiseman advised that the gelding never travelled comfortably throughout the event. App. Wiseman added that when placed under pressure in the home straight the gelding ran on for a short distance, however from the 150 metres commenced to weaken and proved disappointing. Trainer J. Hassett informed stewards that she was disappointed with the performance of the gelding today and indicated that ZIP THE LIP has been in work for a considerable period of time and she will now review its preparation, which may include spelling the gelding. Ms Hassett also indicated that she may experiment with a change of gear if she continues with its preparation, and undertook to advise stewards if anything was amiss with the horse in the days following the event. A post-race veterinary examination of ZIP THE LIP did not reveal any abnormalities.

Stewards questioned trainer M Geaney as to the seemingly improved performance of FILLE VILAINE (J. P. Stanley). Mr Geaney advised that at its most recent start, at Cairns when beaten 9 lengths, in his opinion the mare did not appreciate the extended float trip to Cairns and as such on that day in his opinion the horse raced below expectations. Mr Geaney added that in his opinion its performances at Townsville on 10th October and at Charters Towers on 14th September appeared on paper to be disappointing, on both of those occasions FILLE VILAINE was not beaten far. Mr Geaney noted that the mare had worked will in preparation for today’s event and whilst he expected a forward showing, he was somewhat surprised that the mare was able to win. The explanations were noted.

Race 6: – Rising Sun Marine Open Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – REPROBATE 2nd – STEEL DRAGON 3rd – DAILIKA 4th – MOROSSA

Trainer A. Cameron advised stewards that he will instruct Jockey A. Dykes not to use the whip on DUX BELLORUM unless absolutely necessary. Public announcements were made to that effect and the gelding was ridden accordingly.

DUX BELLORUM (A. Dykes) blundered at the start.

LIKEFATHERLIKESON (J. Felix) was slow to begin.

JUST HUSTLED (App. J. Kuskopf) and CANHEDANCE (D. Simmons) made heavy contact at the start. As a result JUST HUSTLED lost ground.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
