Race 1: - RSL Cup Calcutta Luncheon Friday 25th July Maiden Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – DEE DOUBLEYOU 2nd - WILD TYPE 3rd – VIRGINIA FALLS 4th – PASCALINO
A NEW STARLIGHT (F. Edwards) began very awkwardly and lost ground.
BOHAI BAY (S. Pawsey) stood flat-footed at the start and lost 2 lengths.
At the start SILVER STAR (C. Whiteley) shifted out and hampered GAMBLER’S GAME (M. Usher).
Shortly after the start GAMBLER’S GAME raced ungenerously and attempted to buck. Trainer Mrs A. Usher was advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of GAMBLER’S GAME, which raced ungenerously, and should it perform similarly in future it may be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial in an endeavour to rectify its waywardness.
Joining the course proper, passing the 800 metres, PASCALINO (T. Bannon) shifted in and away from DEE DOUBLEYOU (A. Coome), made contact with the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground. SILVER STAR, which was following, was hampered as a consequence.
A post-race veterinary examination of PASCALINO revealed that the gelding had sustained a minor laceration to the lower lip.
Jockey A. Coome reported that DEE DOUBLEYOU was inclined to lay in throughout the event.
Race 2: - Book a Cup Day Mini Marquee Now Maiden Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – TWICE THE PRICE 2nd – PRETTY VACANT 3rd - CLOUD DANCER 4th – SUNNY CHIEF
RAPID COMMAND (M. Usher) was slow to begin and then blundered shortly after the start.
On jumping, CLOUD DANCER (D. Simmons) bounded in the air.
In the early stages SUNNY CHIEF (S. Wilson) over-raced and when being restrained refused to settle.
For some distance approaching the 1000 metres LADY OF THE LAW (App. J. Orman) raced tight to the inside of ROCKET BILLY REBEL (A. Coome)
Approaching the first turn, near the 1000 metres, WINDSOR GOLD (D. Hayse) improved onto the heels of runners in front, got its head up and shifted out abruptly.
In the early part of the home straight TWICE THE PRICE (C. Whiteley) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
MIRFAK (T. Bannon) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of DARING LIGHT (F. Edwards) did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: - Book Now for Champions VIP Marquee Cup Day BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – ALDREN 2nd – MAGGIE’S PAL 3rd - MARKAZY 4th – ATHABASCA
The declaration of correct was delayed to allow Jockey S. Wilson, the rider of MARKAZY which finished 3rd, to peruse the video films with a view to lodging an objection. Having done so, Jockey Wilson was satisfied with the judge’s placings and correct weight was declared.
OTTANA (App. B. Swaffer) and LITTLE MISS EVA (D. Hayse) were slow to begin.
At the start TETE DE SEAU (S. Pawsey) shifted out and made heavy contact with ALDREN (P. Cullen). Shortly after this ALDREN was further hampered when taken out towards the heels of SKITTER (App. J. Kuskopf).
Near the 1200 metres LOFTY’S MATE (D. Missen) shifted in slightly, forcing MAGGIE’S PAL (T. Bannon) inwards. At the same time BREAK THE DROUGHT (C. Whiteley), which was over-racing, improved onto the heels of MAGGIE’S PAL and when being steadied shifted in tightening the running of NATE (App. J. Orman), which had to be checked. Jockey Missen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of BREAK THE DROUGHT, Jockey C. Whiteley explained that after beginning only fairly he had to ride his mount along in the early stages to take up a prominent position, however BREAK THE DROUGHT then commenced to over-race and resented racing to the inside of other runners. Jockey Whiteley said that the gelding failed to travel comfortably from that stage on and was disappointing. Jockey Whiteley added that in his opinion BREAK THE DROUGHT is better suited when racing to the outside of other runners.
Race 4: – www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – ONE BAR NONE 2nd – ELEMENT OF CHANCE 3rd – KAYAN 4th – MODEL TO EXCEED
MODEL TO EXCEED (J. P. Stanley) began awkwardly.
GOLDEN PAGES (J. Felix) was slow to begin, then shortly after the start was bumped by MONSOON TWISTER (S. Wilson), which shifted in.
Jockey P. Cullen was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the 1100 metres he allowed ONE BAR NONE to shift in when insufficiently clear of BOCEPHUS (App. C. Schmidt), which had to be checked and lost its rightful running. Jockey Culllen was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 2 meetings, to commence at midnight on 15/07/2014, up to and including midnight on 24/07/2014 . In assessing penalty stewards took into account Jockey Cullen’s good riding record.
A post-race veterinary examination of MONSOON TWISTER (S. Wilson), which finished a distant last, did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Ms L. Ashford will be interviewed regarding the filly’s performance.
Race 5: – Glen Boss Special Guest @ Cup Calcutta Lunch BenchMark 70 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ALL THE TORQUE 2nd – CROCHET 3rd – MR BULISTA 4th – BOOM SHA LA
At the start LIGHT DREAMER (D. Simmons) was crowded for room between LITTLE DUCATI (J. P. Stanley) and ALLL THE TORQUE (D. Hayse), which shifted out abruptly.
Race 6: – RSL Townsville Cup Day Saturday 26th July BenchMark 70 Handicap – 1960 metres
1st – KING OF THE FOREST 2nd – MASSURI 3rd - FLAG FAVOURITE 4th – PALMERSTON NORTH
FLAG FAVOURITE (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion SUNTIME (App. J. Orman), which was inclined to lay out, had to be eased when awkwardly placed on the heels of ELOVACHILL (App. B. Swaffer).
In the home straight KING OF THE FOREST (C. Whiteley) laid in under pressure and proved difficult to ride out to the finish.
A post race veterinary examination of ELOVACHILL which weakened over the concluding stages did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 7: - Ladies Race Day This Saturday Open Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – IMELDAMAY 2nd – CARMINE KING 3rd – ARCATRAN 4th – BLAME GAME
Following the race Jockey N. Evans reported that shortly after the start HATZIS clipped the heels of GO AMIGO (App. B. Swaffer), which shifted in marginally, and blundered. Jockey Evans said that from that point on HATZIS failed to travel well at any stage.
CHEVAL ARGENTE (D. Missen) began awkwardly.
In the home straight SIZZLELON (D. Hayse) was inclined to lay in under pressure.
When questioned regarding his riding of COMIC RULER, Jockey C. Whiteley explained that he was instructed to ride the gelding where it was comfortable. Jockey Whiteley said that from a favourable barrier draw he rode COMIC RULER along in the early stages to take up a prominent position. Jockey Whiteley added that COMIC RULER failed to travel at any stage and in his opinion did not handle today’s prevailing track conditions. When asked to explain his riding in the early part of the home straight, Jockey Whiteley said that the gelding was under pressure prior to the home turn after being obliged to race in restricted room between ARCATRAN (J. Felix) and SIZZLELON (D. Hayse), both of which shifted ground. Jockey Whiteley added that in his opinion COMIC RULER will be better suited in races over longer distances than today’s event and on a more even surface. The explanations were noted.
