ARKIBOUM – Slow to begin. When questioned, rider stated that the mare travelled comfortably in a rearward position, in accordance with its established racing pattern, however when placed under pressure approaching the home turn failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. He added that the mare may not have appreciated today’s firm track conditions. Trainer G. Dickson undertook to report to the stewards if anything was amiss with the mare in the days subsequent to the event.

On returning to scale rider reported that his mount was inclined to lay in and felt uneasy in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the mare had lost its off hind plate in running and was lame. Trainer was advised a veterinary certificate of clearance will be required before the mare is permitted to start again.

BLU AXIS – Bumped on the hindquarters and turned inwards near the 1500 metres.

DR STRANGELOVE – Leaving 1300 metres had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DUBAWI’S IMAGE (C. Eaton) which, whilst racing intractably, shifted in when not quite clear. Stewards were mindful of the racing manners of DUBAWI’S IMAGE, nevertheless Jockey Eaton was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

DUBAWI’S IMAGE – When questioned regarding the performance the rider explained that she had been instructed to take up a rearward position, however after beginning particularly well the mare, which was stepping up in distance, refused to settle, raced in a forward position and consequently failed to finish off the race as had been expected.
