GENERAL
As G. Cooksley was indisposed, the following riding substitutions were permitted. Race 1. VIZIER - D.Craven; Race 3. SIR SAHIB - C. Maund; Race 5. NONEDIYM NOODLES - D. Craven; Race 6. SIR SIDNA - D. Craven; Race 7. NARWONG - S. Galloway; Race 10. BANYULA BRAVE - N. Tomizawa.
As M Cahill was also indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved. Race 2. MRS COSGROVE - A. Paramour; Race 3. STAR CONTRACT - J. Warrington; Race 4. RACING FRIENDS - S. Katsidis; Race 5. FLYING TAN - S. Seamer; Race 6. NEW SHOES - S. Katsidis; Race 7. BANFF CONNECTION - J. Taylor.
RACE 1: FOSTER'S LIGHT ICE 3YO MAIDEN H'CAP - 900M.
R. Goltz was dislodged from BREAKFAST AT SEA when proceeding to the barriers. Following race 10, R. Goltz advised stewards of soreness to his neck.
VIZIER, which sustained an injury after contacting the gate post upon leaving the enclosure, was declared a late withdrawal at 1.29pm, acting on the advice of the Club's veterinary surgeon. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on VIZIER were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 5 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 6 cents in the dollars on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time.
On return to scale, a protest was lodged by R. Goltz, rider of the 2nd placegetter, BREAKFAST AT SEA, against MINT REGENT being declared the winner on the grounds of interference over the final 100m. Stewards established that BREAKFAST AT SEA had to be checked approaching the 50m. when attempting a run to the inside of MINT REGENT where there was doubtful room. As a consequence, stewards dismissed the objection and confirmed the judge's placings.
INNEUVRE and HULAKAI were both slow to begin.
PETALT shifted outwards at the start, hampering THREATNER, which was slow to begin.
INNEUVRE shifted out making the 800m. turn, forcing HULAKAI and THREATNER wider on the track.
Near the 500m., MINT REGENT shifted out and made contact with PETALT.
RACE 2: CROWN LAGER F&M MAIDEN H'CAP - 1200M.
TENDER POISON jumped outwards at the start, resulting in LEE CHEREE, which had jumped away awkwardly, being further hampered.
RACE 3: CARTON DRAUGHT ENTIRES & GELDINGS MAIDEN H'CAP - 1200M.
CHAMBERLAIN, ULTIMATUM and HAD A HUNCH were all slow to begin.
MACEDON AFFAIRS was momentarily held up for a run on the home turn.
MACEDON AFFAIRS lost its near fore plate in running.
RACE 4: J.J. ATKINS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES 2YO FILLIES HANDICAP - 1200M.
D'ARGENT FILLE shifted out at the start and made contact with FAIRY MUSIC, which jumped awkwardly with its head in the air.
A veterinary examination of SMILEY BABY, which compounded badly from the 500m., failed to reveal any abnormality. The connections of SMILEY BABY undertook to report to stewards any condition which becomes apparent following the event which may have contributed to the poor performance. The connections were also advised that they would be required to produce a veterinary clearance for SMILEY BABY prior to its next race start.
RACE 5: BOC GASES SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES 3YO CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1200 M.
On return to sale, a protest was lodged by S. Seamer, rider of the 4th placegetter, FLYING TAAN, against REGAL GENTLEMAN being declared the 3rd placegetter, alleging interference approaching the 250m.. Stewards found that near the 250m. REGAL GENTLEMAN shifted out under pressure, impeding FLYING TAAN. Given the margin of a long head which separated both horses at the finish, stewards upheld the objection and the Judge's placings were amended to read: 3 - ENA'S TREASURE - 1st; 4 - OURS - 2nd; 1 - FLYING TAAN - 3rd; and 12 - REGAL GENTLEMAN - 4th. At a subsequent inquiry B. Compton, rider of REGAL GENTLEMAN, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out under pressure.
TRULY BRAVE shifted out at the start resulting in KING COCKY, which was slow to begin, being taken across the heels of WANCHAI LADY.
KING COCKY shifted in off the heels of REGAL GARTER at the 800m. and then raced ungenerously for some distance.
RACE 6: VICTORIA BITTER/JAMES TAYLOR CLASS 4 H'CAP - 1300M.
Due to a misunderstanding, J.Warrington was declared as the rider of DIET DAZE and AUDREY ANN. B. Carne was substituted as the rider of AUDREY ANN.
When steadied by its rider at the 1100m., MIDNIGHT DEAL commenced to race ungenerously and lost ground.
Approaching the 150m. SIR SIDNA shifted out under pressure, inconveniencing DIET DAZE. D. Craven, rider of SIR SIDNA, was reprimanded and urged to make more effort to keep his mounts on a true course.
RACE 7: CARLTON WEETWOOD HANDICAP - 1300M.
Trainer R. Maund was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for LUCKY RAID by the prescribed time.
THE KILDARE KID jumped away awkwardly, which resulted in that horse making contact with the inside gate. Soon afterwards, THE KILDARE KID (D. Crossland) bumped heavily with AKAABER'S PROMISE. In this incident, D. Crossland's right foot then became dislodged from the stirrup iron. D. Crossland did not regain the use of that iron until the 1000m..
BANFF CONNECTION also began awkwardly, making contact with REBEL WITH A CAUSE. BANFF CONNECTION then tended to overrace in the early stages
Approaching the 850m., NARWONG shifted in, despite the efforts of its rider, S.Galloway, resulting in BICUSPID being tightened on to ANNUNCIATION, which had to be checked.
Nearing the 800m. CLASSIC CLICHÉ had to be steadied when racing in restricted room inside FOREVER MISSED, which in turn was taken in momentarily by STARTELL. S. Katsidis, rider of STARTELL, was urged to exercise more care.
Veterinary examination of STARTELL after that gelding left the swabbing stall, revealed lameness in the near foreleg.
RACE 8: CASCADE PREMIUM LIGHT CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1300M.
A. Gillet, who was indisposed, was replaced by M. Cahill. M. Cahill subsequently became indisposed and was replaced by N. Jolly.
CHANTAL PARK was slow to begin.
SPECIAL SILVER shifted out at the start tightening ADHOC DOC on to GLENTARKIE.
Soon after the start, SINGING VICTORY raced ungenerously and got its head up.
Near the 750m., MIXADAD, which was racing awkwardly, had to be steadied off the heels of GLENTARKIE, which shifted in slightly. As a consequence, CHANTAL PARK had to be checked off the heels of MIXADAD and lost ground.
RACE 9: CARLTON MIDSTRENGTH BITTER CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1600M.
DIAMOND ZOFF jumped away awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, taking RINGELIG out on to DOOLALLY, which in turn resulted in WINGS OF SILVER being checked when tightened for room between DOOLALLY and HEY BANJO.
DIAMOND ZOFF raced fiercely on the first turn and had to be further restrained when that gelding shifted out on to the heels of DOOLALLY.
RINGELING hung out on the 800m. turn and had to be steadied off the heels of NOTICE.
RACE 10: CARLTON DRAUGHT CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1100M.
MR SOLO was very slow to begin.
After being held up behind YOGI'S EDITION from the 100m., EL GRECO eventually obtained a run to the inside of that horse approaching the finishing line. When YOGI'S EDITION shifted in under pressure, EL GRECO had to be steadied. J. Warrington, rider of YOGI'S EDITION, was reprimanded for failing to keep his mount on a true course.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
