Race 1: Carlton Midstrength Class 3 H’cap.
1st - Mustang's Mate 2nd - Top Perch 3rd - Dantibes Rhythm 4th - Ivorfraar
CAFFE FRANCAIS (E. Dredge) stood flatfooted at the start, losing ground. Trainer L. Fraser was advised that he would have to provide a barrier certificate for the filly prior to its next race start.
DANTIBES RHYTHM (C. Spry) jumped outwards at the start.
TOP PERCH (M. Pelling), which raced 3 wide from the 700m, hung in once placed under pressure in the home straight.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the reason for jockey E. Dredge being dislodged from CAFFE FRANCAIS in he home straight. After taking evidence from riders C. Gilby (IVORFRAAR), M. Pelling (TOP PERCH), G. Lynch (DEVONPORT), stewards adjourned the inquiry to enable E. Dredge to be present. As E. Dredge had been transported to hospital, the following riding substitutions were made: Race 3. Vocalic - H. Hamada; Race 4. Miss Boonara - G. Lynch (No apprentice available); Race 5. Slide - C. Gilby.
Race 2: Saas Bubbly Colts and Geldings Maiden H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Get Bent 2nd - Sequal Boy 3rd - Bower 4th - Viking Treasure
SEQUAL BOY (M. Pelling) jumped outwards at the start, coming into contact with JAX (N. Evans).
TOP'S LAD (J. McKinnon), jumped outwards at the start, taking BOWER (A. Parramore) on to GET BENT (C. Gilby).
SHA'BOURNE REGAL (T. Banks) jumped in the air at the start, losing ground.
SEQUAL BOY raced wide throughout and was inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.
SEQUAL BOY and VIKING TREASURE (R. Goltz) laid in once placed under pressure in the straight.
Near the 400m., BOWER was eased across the heels of POTTERS MATE, which was tiring.
When questioned regarding the performance of POTTERS MATE, S. Sharp stated that the colt travelled well in behind the leaders until the 500m. when he endeavoured to improve, however POTTERS MATE was immediately under pressure and, in his opinion, the performance was very disappointing.
Race 3: JJ Atkins Debutante Stakes QTIS 2yo Maiden H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Vocalic 2nd - Bold Reason 3rd - Just Can't Wait 4th - Dawnhill
JACK'S A RIPPER and DESERT HONOUR (Race 4) were declared late scratchings at 7.45 a.m.. Trainer R. Mackay will be interviewed regarding these late scratchings.
WHAT A TALE was a late scratching on veterinary advice at 2.06 p.m.. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on WHAT A TALE were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 25 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 18 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer P. Overell was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary certificate for WHAT A TALE prior to its next race start.
DAWNHILL jumped awkwardly.
BOLD REASON (M. Cahill) also jumped awkwardly, losing ground.
At the start, QUEEN BIRD (A. Pattillo), TACTICALLY (G. Lynch) and MOLLY'S IMAGE (K. Yoshida) were all tightened for room between VOCALIC (H. Hamada), which jumped inwards, and RHINESTONE LASS (A. Best), resulting in TACTICALLY losing ground.
At the 950m., BOLD REASON ((M. Cahill) was steadied from the heels of OUR KYNISKA (J. McKinnon), which shifted in abruptly. J. McKinnon, rider of OUR KYNISKA, was advised of his obligations once his mounts shift ground.
Approaching the 900m., RHINESTONE LASS was eased from the heels of OUR KYNISKA, which shifted out.
Near the 750m. STREETWALKIN (M. Pelling) was crowded for room by BOLD REASON, which shifted in to avoid the heels of OUR KYNISKA (J. McKinnon).
Near the 500m., OUR KYNISKA was steadied when crowded for room by RHINESTONE LASS (A. Best), which shifted in whilst racing greenly.
Leaving the 200m., STREETWALKIN was momentarily held up for clear running.
BOLD REASON (M. Cahill) laid in over the concluding stages.
Race 4: Cougar Rum & Cola Fillies & Mares Maiden H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Ineta 2nd - Pickastar 3rd - Fraareva 4th - Miss Boonara
Trainer M. Currie was fined the sum of $100 for failing to declare a rider for PALANQUIN by the required time.
HOO HOOKS (J. McKinnon) was slowly away.
MISS BOONARA (G. Lynch), which was slowly away, was crowded for room shortly after by SWEPT UP (N. Tomizawa), which jumped out.
For some distance leaving the 800m., TIM TAM MISS (C. Gilby), when racing in restricted room to the inside of FRAAREVA (M. Rice), made contact with the running rail at the 600m. and then appeared to contact the heels of FRAAREVA. C. Gilby, rider of TIM TAM MISS, was severely reprimanded for persevering for a run where there was insufficient room.
Approaching the 550m., FRAAREVA (M. Rice) and FAME SECA (J. Sharp) made contact on 2 occasions.
Near the 550m., HOO HOOKS was checked when tightened for room between MISS BOONARA, which shifted out marginally, and SATAN'S GAL (K. Attard), which shifted in. K. Attard, rider of SATAN'S GAL, was reprimanded for permitting her mount to shift ground when insufficiently clear.
PALANQUIN was momentarily crowded for room by PICKASTAR (J. Byrne) near the 400m..
S. Katsidis, rider of INETA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 350m., he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of SUPERSTAR VIRGO, making heavy contact with that runner, causing apprentice Hamada, rider of SUPERSTAR VIRGO, to become unbalanced and almost fall. S. Katsidis was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 17 April, and to expire at midnight, 27 April 2004. In this incident, H. Hamada's foot came out of the near-side stirrup and he was unable to regain contact with the stirrup for the remainder of the race.
Near the 350m., BELCH A FLAME (L. Morrison) was forced wider on the track by SUPERSTAR VIRGO.
PICKASTAR (J. Byrne) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Race 5: Torquay/James Taylor Class 5 H'cap - 1000m.

Shortly after the start, PUBLIC EYE (K. Yoshida) and BRISBANE LION (S. Katsidis) both eased when tightened for room between SLIDE (C. Gilby), which jumped out, and CHRISTMAS HANDOUT (H. Hamada), which shifted in.
Near the 700m., PUBLIC EYE (K. Yoshida) was steadied when crowded for room between CUT IT OUT (J. Byrne) and CHRISTMAS HANDOUT (H. Hamada), which shifted in.
BRISANE LION (S. Katsidis) was held up for clear running from the 450m. until straightening for the run home.
CHRISTMAS HANDOUT raced wide throughout.
Race 6: BOC QTIS 3yo Class 4 H'cap - 1100m.
1st - Paradise Dancer 2nd - Heavenly Cruise 3rd - Our Mr Buzz 4th - Mr Clancy
PARADISE DANCER (K. Attard), which jumped away awkwardly, and OUR MR BUZZ (M. Rice) made contact on jumping away.
Shortly after the start, HEAVENLY CRUISE (K. Yoshida) was taken out by MR CLANCY (J. McKinnon), which shifted out.
HEAVENLY CRUISE hung out from the 850m. until the home straight.
Race 7: Carlton Draught QRSE Weetwood H'cap - 1300m.
1st - Tellem 2nd - Messiaen 3rd - Impaler 4th - Alfonso
Trainer K. Maund was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for CEFFYL by the prescribed time.
SUNDAE JESTER (D. Evans) was slow to begin.
Near the 1200m., SILVERTHORNE (L. Morrison) was eased when crowded for room between ALFONSO (M. Pelling), which was taken out by TELLEM (S. Katsidis), and RAW INSTINCT (J. Byrne).
Leaving the 1200m., KING'S COUP (M. Rice) shifted out and made heavy contact with CEFFYL (D. Tanti).
Near the 300m., D. Evans, rider of SUNDAE JESTER, was almost dislodged when his mount blundered when it struck the heels of CEFFYL (D. Tanti), which shifted out to avoid the heels of DEVIL (A. Pattillo), which was tiring. RAW INSTINCT, which was racing to the outside of SUNDAE JESTER, was checked in this incident. After taking evidence from all riders, stewards were unable to apportion blame for the incident to any one rider.
Race 8: Rothbury Estate Class 3 H'cap - 1600m.
1st - Editor In Chief 2nd - With Astaire 3rd - House Of Woodwind 4th - Local
STOMPEY SEPOY (S. Seamer) was eased when crowded for room between WITH ASTAIRE (A. Best) and LLAMA LIP (K. Yoshida) when both shifted ground at the start.
LOCAL (A. Pattillo) jumped outwards at the start, taking BADA BING (C. Spry) out on to EDITOR IN CHIEF (J. Sharp).
SEGURA (G. Lynch), which was slowly away, got its head up whilst being eased away from the heels of STAR STRIKE (M. Pelling) near the 1400m..
Near the 1200m., EDITOR IN CHIEF was eased from the heels of WITH ASTAIRE (A. Best) as the pace steadied.
HOUSE OF WOODWIND (A. Parramore) raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Near the 700m., SEGURA (G. Lynch) got its head up whilst being eased from the heels of BADA BING (C. Spry).
Approaching the 600m., BADA BAING got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance whilst being eased from the heels of LOCAL (A. Pattillo).
Near the 600., STAR STRIKE (M. Pelling), whilst racing tight to the inside of STOMPEY SEPOY (S. Seamer), blundered when it struck the heels of EDITOR IN CHIEF (J. Sharp), which was taken out marginally by WITH ASTAIRE (A. Best), which rolled out. Stewards were unable to apportion blame to any one rider due to contributing factors.
STAR STRIKE returned to scale lame in the off fore fetlock. Trainer J. Livingstone was advised that he would be required to produce a veterinary certificate for STAR STRIKE prior to its next race start.
