Race 1: Win News Class 1 H'cap – 1625m
The start was delayed to allow for the broadcast of another event.
RUNDLE HEIGHTS (R. Ride) stood flatfooted at the start and lost ground, and then failed to muster early speed.
VAN HOOLIGAN (D. McIntosh), LEICA PEGASUS (C. Spry) and DRAGON BAY (N. Yamada) were tightened for room at the start between ROOMS ON FIRE (N. Evans) and ROCKLEA RAIDER, which jumped outwards. As a result, LEICA PEGASUS and VAN HOOLIGAN lost ground.
PRECIOUS DRAGON (N. Tomizawa) was held up for a short distance rounding the home turn.
SKILFUL PAT (A. Fancourt) was held up for a short distance in the early stages of the home straight.
On return to scale, apprentice B. Newport reported to stewards that FLYING DAZZLER had a tendency to overrace during the early and middle stages.
DRAGON BAY (N. Yamada) overraced during the middle stages and passing the 1000m was forced to shift wider on the track, and as a result raced wide for the remainder of the race.
In the early stages of the home straight, STAND’N’STARE (R. Goltz) was inclined to lay in under pressure.
ROOMS ON FIRE raced wide throughout.
Stewards questioned trainer S. Neylon regarding the seemingly improved performance of ROCKLEA RAIDER. Mr Neylon advised stewards that ROCKLEA RAIDER was racing back in class today which he felt was to the gelding’s advantage. He added that he had changed his training methods for ROCKLEA RAIDER with a view to modifying the work to suit races over 1600m and further in preparation for today’s event which he also believed contributed to the improved performance. Stewards noted the explanation.
Trainer M. Kropp reported to stewards following the event that FLYING DAZZLER had sustained an abrasion above its eye which he believed occurred when the horse was loaded into the barriers. Mr Kropp was reprimanded by stewards for removing FLYING DAZZLER from the course prior to the prescribed time.
A post race veterinary examination of GRAPPA, which compounded from the 600m, revealed the gelding to be suffering from a mild case of heat stress. In light of the performance today, trainer K. Monckton advised it was now her intention to spell the gelding.
Race 2: XXXX Gold Class 2 H'cap – 1300m
The start was delayed when UNPUBLISHED CRITIC (N. Tomizawa) required farrier attention upon arrival at the barriers.
MILLERSBURG (M. O'Brien) jumped away awkwardly.
PERFORMIA, which was slow to begin, raced greenly for the majority of the event, and had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
MY MASERATI (S. Bogenhuber) had a tendency to hang in from the 500m and proved difficult to ride out rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.
ITALA PRINCE (D. McIntosh) and MILLERSBURG raced wide throughout.
Race 3: Membership Now Available QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate – 1300m
ROL’N ROBI (R. Ride) began awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 1100m, PIVOTAL POINT (N. Tomizawa) brushed the running rail when it shifted in and away from CROWN THE BOSS (S. Bogenhuber), which shifted in abruptly.
MYSTERY ANGEL (G. Geran) and CONVOY (C. Spry) raced ungenerously and threw its head in the air whilst being restrained leaving the 1000m.
Stewards questioned R. Ride in relation to the overall performance of ROL’N ROBI. Apprentice Ride stated that after beginning awkwardly the saddle shifted to the near-side, which placed her at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event. She added that prior to the race she intended to take a sit off the pace, however due to the incident with the saddle at the start she was unable to do so and was forced to improve in a 3 wide position around runners during the early and middle stages. Apprentice Ride advised that whilst the filly tired over the concluding stages, bearing in mind the relevant factors during the event, she was of the view there were genuine excuses for the performance of ROL’N ROBI today.
Race 4: Vanderfield Toowoomba CG&E Maiden Plate – 1050m
MARKSFIELD was required to be resaddled upon arrival at the barriers.
N. Yamada was dislodged from KLEINTON KID during the preliminary, resulting that horse galloping for a short distance before being recaptured. N. Yamada remounted and rode the horse to the barriers and was cleared to start.
LAGER LAD (M. O'Brien) jumped inwards at the start and made contact with TO BE KING (R. Goltz).
LORD BEAUFORT (K. Yoshida) and COSTADOSH (G. Geran) bumped on jumping away.
Leaving the 800m, SUNSET RAIDER (D. McIntosh) raced ungenerously for a short distance and lost ground.
Rounding the home turn, SUNSET RAIDER (D. McIntosh) shifted in when it improved onto the heels of WARLOCK (N. Tomizawa) and had to be steadied.
KLEINTON KID (N. Yamada) and MARKSFIELD (D. Green) both raced greenly throughout the event.
Race 5: Style Magazine F&M Maiden Plate – 1050m
SWEET SUGAR (N. Tomizawa) was slow to begin.
PALMAS (K. Forrester) and LA CHATEAU (K. Yoshida) were tightened for room at the start between OUR STARLIGHT (A. Fancourt) and ACTIVE STAR (S. Apthorpe), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 700m, OUR STARLIGHT shifted in to a position on the fence and in doing so made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced for a short distance.
Alisha Taylor, rider of LADY HORSEPOWER, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 550m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ACTIVE STAR, resulting in that runner being taken in on to OUR STARLIGHT, resulting in OUR STARLIGHT being tightened for room and having to be checked. Alisha Taylor was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 8 January and to expire at midnight, 17 January.
Leaving the 400m, PALMAS improved on to the heels of the tiring PIMLICO GIRL (C. Spry) and shifted out to obtain clear running.
Inside the 100m, SWEET AND SAVAGE (B. Evans) had a tendency to lay out under pressure and proved difficult to ride out.
Stewards questioned jockey C. Spry regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of PIMLICO GIRL. Jockey Spry stated he was able to obtain a good position throughout the event and travelled comfortably, however when placed under pressure from the 600m, the filly failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Trainer R. Lipp advised that in light of the disappointing performance today, it was his intention to spell the filly. A post race veterinary examination of PIMLICO GIRL failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 6: Cracker Print and Paper BM85 H'cap – 1050m
Due to an alteration in racing times for the Bell meeting, L. Tilley was unable to arrive on course in time to fulfil his engagement on Dr Barnard and was replaced by N. Evans.
LONE ASSASSIN (R. Goltz) began awkwardly.
Near the 900m, PETERHOF (N. Tomizawa) was forced to steadied to avoid the heels of TOMCAT (M. O'Brien). As a result, HAIZUM (N. Yamada), which was following, was forced to steady to avoid the heels of PETERHOF and shifted out. HAIZUM then raced 3 wide for the remainder of the event.
LONE ASSASSIN had a tendency to hang out for the majority of the event.
Race 7: Qld Electrical Class 2 H'cap – 870m
HOT TESTA (N. Evans) and ONE LION (S. Bogenhuber) were slow to begin.
LISSKA (Amy Taylor) and BAM’S BOY (L. Tilley) made contact on jumping away.
Near the 700m, THE ROBBER had to be steadied to avoid the heels of STANDOVER (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in marginally.
In the middle stages whilst overracing, URULOKI (R. Goltz) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LISSKA.
