From Toowoomba Turf Club meeting, 28.2.14 – Race 7

Stewards questioned apprentice B. Stower in relation to her riding of CAVU over the concluding stages of the event as to whether she had ridden that colt out to the end of the race. After hearing submissions stewards accepted the explanations tendered by apprentice Stower in relation to her failure to ride that horse out to the end of the event.

Following the performance of CAVU, trainer T. Sears advised that the colt would now be sent for a spell.

Race 1: Myob – Love Your Work F&M Class 2 H'cap -1050m

MIM (B. Stower) and ACTIVE STAR (S. Apthorpe) made contact on jumping away.

MISS TYPIN (N. Evans) raced wide in the early stages.

LUNAR (C. Spry) was crowded for room at the start between SPECIAL ROSE (J. Orman) and GINGER EXPRESS (R. Ride), which shifted in.

Leaving the 400m, SPENT (B. Appo) was disappointed for a run between MIM and MISS TYPIN , and near the 300m SPENT clipped the heels of MIM and blundered.

SPECIAL ROSE (J. Orman) raced wide for the majority of the race.

B. Appo reported at scale that SPENT, which proved disappointing, felt sore in the near foreleg. A post race veterinary examination of SPENT failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 2: The Hip Pocket Workwer & Safety Class 4 H'cap – 1625m

SERIOUSLY READY was presented to race without a nose roll, which was part of the horse’s approved gear. As Trainer B. Smith travelled to the meeting without a nose roll, stewards permitted the gelding to race without this gear. Trainer B. Smith was subsequently fined $100.

Rounding the turn near the 1300m, ESTEVEZ (S. Apthorpe), which was overracing, raced ungenerously for a short distance and made contact with the running rail, becoming unbalanced.

Near the 1300m, HOT TESTA (B. Evans) threw its head in the air whilst being restrained and lost ground.

In the early stages of the race, CARLSON’S FELT (B. Appo) raced ungenerously at the heels of ROYAL ROCKET (N. Evans) and was forced to be restrained on a number of occasions.

After being caught wide in the early stages, B. Stower allowed HUSSY ERIN to stride forward and obtained the leading position on the rail near the 800m.

In the early stages of the home straight, GAELSTORM (J. Orman) shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running.

Stewards questioned B. Evans in relation to the performance of HOT TESTA. Jockey Evans advised that after beginning only fairly the gelding failed to muster early speed and settled further back than anticipated. He further added that his mount travelled comfortably in the middle stages however when placed under pressure passing the 600m, HOT TESTA did not quicken as quickly as he had anticipated. Jockey Evans also stated that whilst the horse may have appeared disappointing on face value, he was of the view that the gelding ran on reasonably in the home straight and he was not entirely disappointed with the performance today.

B. Appo, rider of CARLSON’S FELT, was fined $300 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

ARTALO (K. Yoshida) laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Following the disappointing performance of BODEGA BAY, stewards advised trainer L. Fraser that BODEGA BAY would be barred from TAB venues until it established improved form at non TAB meetings. Mr Fraser informed stewards that BODEGA BAY would leave his stables following tonight’s performance.
