From Toowoomba Turf Club meeting, 15.3.14 – Race 6

Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding jockey P. Holmes losing his whip as the rider of Dashing Conqueror near the 100m. After reviewing betting on the race and viewing the patrol films further, stewards, based on the evidence tendered at this stage, do not intend to proceed further with the matter.

Race 1: Browns Office Choice QTIS 2yo H'cap – 1000m

SOVEREIGN SON (B. Stower) and NANDINE ROAD (E. Ljung) made contact on jumping away, resulting in SOVEREIGN SON losing ground.

Near the 500m, RED KISSES (K. Yoshida) laid in for a short distance and had to be steadied.

Leaving the 400m, SOVEREIGN SON, when attempting a narrow run between STAR OF AQUARIUS (A. Fancourt) and DIVA MISS (S. Apthorpe) shifted out marginally and made contact with the hind quarters of DIVA MISS, resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced.

Near the 350m, HIDDEN EDITION (B. Appo) shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail.

GLITTER FACE (A. Kitson) shifted wider on the track rounding the home turn.

RED KISSES raced greenly in the home straight.

Stewards questioned B. Stower in relation to the performance of SOVEREIGN SON, which despite finishing second performed somewhat disappointingly, given market expectations. Apprentice Stower advised that the gelding was slow into stride and failed to muster the necessary early speed to obtain a forward position, which apprentice Stower felt was to its disadvantage today. She further advised that the gelding did run on reasonably in the home straight and, in her opinion, was not entirely disappointing given the circumstances.

S. Apthorpe, rider of DIVA MISS accidentally dropped his whip near the 350m.

Race 2: Fitton Insurance Class 4 H'cap – 1050m

Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer P. Kings for the late declaration of rider for I’M NO RUBY.

I’M NO RUBY (E. Ljung), which blundered on jumping away, was further hampered at the start by AMAIZING DRAGON (S. Apthorpe), which began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with I’M NO RUBY.

TAIMZUPTINA (K. Yoshida) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 900m, AMAIZING DRAGON was tightened for room and clipped heels when racing between GREEN WITH ENVY (B. Stower), which shifted in whilst laying in, and I’M NO RUBY, which was taken out marginally by MONDUKE (N. Evans), which in turn was taken out marginally by STREAM OF LIGHT (A. Taylor). Whilst stewards noted that the incident was one of significance, they were unable to attribute fault to any one rider, however did advise apprentice Stower, rider of GREEN WITH ENVY, she would be expected to make greater effort in similar circumstances to prevent her mount from crowding runners to her inside.

Near the 500m, I’M NO RUBY improved onto the heels of GREEN WITH ENVY and became unbalanced and shifted out, losing ground.

Passing the 150m, PLUM BOB (B. Appo) had a tendency to lay in under pressure, resulting in TAIMZUPTINA having to be steadied to avoid that horse’s heels.

KATIKA (L. Cheshire) and AMAIZING DRAGON both raced wide for the majority of the race.

On return to scale, B. Appo reported that PLUM BOB never travelled on the bit throughout the event, had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the home straight, and, in his opinion, proved somewhat disappointing.

Trainer D. Gollan was questioned by stewards regarding the seemingly improved performance of SILVER COMMAND. He advised that at its most recent start the gelding was ridden for speed and led the event, which in hindsight he felt was to its detriment. Therefore tonight he instructed apprentice Fancourt to ride the horse just off the pace if possible, which she was able to do, and which, in his opinion, assisted in the improved performance. Mr Gollan further added that prior to its last start the gelding was racing in metropolitan races and he felt the drop back to provincial grade was again to its advantage.

Race 3: Colliers International Class 2 H'cap – 1200m

GOLD DEAL (K. Yoshida) began awkwardly, losing ground.

VICTORIA NILE (A. Fancourt) was slow to begin.

PETLEY (E. Ljung) began awkwardly.

Leaving the 900m, RAGING TO WIN (N. Evans) became awkward at the heels of ZA RAPPER (B. Stower), which shifted out whilst hanging.

HUXTABLE (N. Yamada) overraced in the early stages and near the 900m made contact with the running rail, then shifted out bumping VICTORIA NILE.

PETLEY (E. Ljung) raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Near the 200m, GOLD DEAL had to be steadied to avoid the heels of VICTORIA NILE, which shifted in abruptly.

JUST A ROCKSTAR (R. Ride) had a tendency to hang out for the majority of the event.

Race 4: Toowoomba BMW H'cap – 1200m

MISS IMAGICA (A. Fancourt) jumped in the air at the start and was further hampered when tightened for room between KEMPELLY (N. Tomizawa) and LADY AGULHAS (E. Ljung), both of which shifted ground.

Near the 950m, SKY EFFORT (J. Orman) was forced to steady to avoid the heels of KEMPELLY, which shifted in when not completely clear. KEMPELLY then continued to shift in, resulting in EMMERTT (N. Evans) having to be checked to avoid that runner’s heels. N. Tomizawa, rider of KEMPELLY, was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

After being caught wide in the early stages, MISS IMAGICA was ridden forward to obtain a position outside the lead near the 800m.

LADY AGULHAS compounded from the 500m and was eased down in the home straight. A post-race veterinary inspection of LADY AGULHAS revealed the mare to have sustained a serious laceration to the near hind tendon. Trainer T Dougall was advised he will be required to obtain a veterinary clearance for LADY AGULHAS prior to it next racing.

FANTASTIC BLUE (B. Stower) raced wide throughout.

B. Stewart could offer no tangible explanation for the disappointing performance of THE RINGMASTER today. Trainer T. Sears also expressed disappointment with the performance of THE RINGMASTER. He further advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

B. Stewart, rider of THE RINGMASTER, was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior the 100m.
Race 5: Mort & Co Class 1 Plate – 2000m

NORTHERN WARRIOR (J. Orman) raced ungenerously whilst being restrained in the early stages.

CLANGORANDA (S. Drake) overraced in the early and middle stages.

JAVA BAY (Z. Scullie) raced wide without cover until a point near the 700m.

CLANGORANDA was held up and unable to improve from the 500m until the early stages of the home straight.

Apprentice A. Fancourt reported to stewards that SERALA, when placed under pressure passing the 600m, failed to quicken as she had expected and as a result lost some ground. She added that upon straightening the filly, when placed under pressure with the whip, did run on reasonably and found the line well.

Race 6: Wideland AG & Construction BM75 H'cap – 1650m

HARDMAN HARRY (S. Apthorpe) was slow to begin.

Jockey N. Evans, rider of OUR GRAND FINALE, reported to stewards that after being bumped by VIVAHEART, which shifted off the fence near the 1200m, his mount commenced to race very fiercely and as a result improved into a 3-wide position outside the leaders despite his efforts to restrain. He further advised that the gelding commenced to race more tractably at point near the 800m, at which stage he was able to restrain to take a trailing position behind VIVAHEART.

Race 7: Toowoomba Solar Centre Maiden H'cap – 1050m

EAT YOUR HEART OUT (R. Ride) was slow to begin.

HONEY BE WARNED (E. Ljung) and SPECTACULAR ROCK (K. Yoshida) made contact on jumping away.

Approaching the 900m, BLUMAC (N. Evans) had to be steadied and shift wider on the track to avoid the heels of ALL BUT (N. Tomizawa), which shifted out. As a result, EAT YOUR HEART OUT, which was racing to the outside, was forced wider on the track for a short distance.

Near the 700m, BLUMAC (N. Evans) shifted in and away abruptly from VIVID IMAGINATION (B. Stower) and as a result EAT YOUR HEART OUT, which was following, was forced to steady to avoid the heels of BLUMAC.

Passing the 200m, EAT YOUR HEART OUT shifted in and away from ROUGE SUN (J. Orman), which had a tendency to lay in under pressure, resulting in EAT YOUR HEART OUT having to be steadied to avoid the heels of BLUMAC.

Stewards questioned B. Stower in relation to her riding of VIVID IMAGINATION in the middle stages whereby the colt appeared to lose ground, and furthermore as to the overall performance of the VIVID IMAGINATION. Apprentice Stower advised that after being caught wide in the early and middle stages, she elected to restrain her mount to obtain a position closer to the rail, however when restrained the colt dropped the bit and lost further ground than she anticipated. She further added that as a result of this she placed VIVID IMAGINATION under pressure from the 600m, however it failed to respond to her riding and, in her opinion, was disappointing over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of VIVID IMAGINATION failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards will interview trainer M. Nolan in the days subsequent to today’s race meeting as to the post-race condition of VIVID IMAGINATION.
