Race 1: Become A TTC Member Class 1 H'cap – 1200m

Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer J. Byrne for the late declaration of N. Yamada as the rider of LOVETHENIGHTLIFE.

HEART’N SOUL (S. Drake) began awkwardly and lost ground.

MELODIAL (K. Yoshida) was slow to begin.

FINNOMONY (J. Orman) shifted out and made contact with STARLIGHT BELLE (A. Fancourt) at the start.

JO’S LUCK (R. Vigar) and MI IDEA (M. Cox) made contact on jumping away.

Near the 700m, STARLIGHT BELLE shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail and as a result became unbalanced.

STARLIGHT BELLE was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

JOE’S LUCK shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

LA CHATEAU (N. Nishio) raced wide throughout.

Stewards questioned J. Orman with regards to the riding tactics he adopted on FINNOMONY and the overall performance of that filly. He stated that his instructions were to ride the filly where comfortable, however not to get too far back in the field. He added that after riding forward from the barriers he was caught extremely wide and for this reason he elected to steady his mount and obtain cover near the 900m, which resulted in FINNOMONY racing further back in the field than he would have liked. He went on to add that he placed his mount under pressure from the 600m and approaching the home turn he directed his mount to the outside of MELODIAL’s heels at the same time that it shifted ground which resulted in him having to shift out wider rounding the home. He stated that FINNOMONY then ran on only fairly in the home straight and had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages. Stewards noted the explanation.

Stewards sought an explanation from Mrs C. Allardyce, trainer of JO’S LUCK, regarding the seemingly improved performance of that runner. She stated that the JO’S LUCK was first-up today and that she had worked on the mare’s front feet, which had caused it some trouble throughout its racing career and had removed the concussion plates for today’s race. Mrs Allardyce added that she had made a further gear change of blinkers on in an effort to have JO’S LUCK race in a more forward position. She further added that the mare had impressed her in winning a recent trial and whilst the win today was not overly surprising, she felt that JO’S LUCK would be better suited over distances further than that of today’s race.

Race 2: Neil Mansell Concrete BM75 H'cap – 1200m

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards and the connections of equal third placegetters ESTHER CAROLINE and IN THE GENES to view the Judge’s photo finish print for third. After taking submissions from the Judge, Mr T. Sears, trainer of ESTHER CAROLINE, and Mr R. Lipp, trainer of IN THE GENES, stewards, acting under the provisions of AR156, were satisfied with the Judge’s decision and correct weight was semaphored on the placing’s 1- 4 Dead Heat 10/8 - 7.

At the start, ESTHER CAROLINE (B. Stower) jumped inwards and bumped SEZWHO (J. Orman).

NOT WITHOUT SIN (R. Ride) raced keenly in the early and middle stages and was obliged to race wide throughout.

SKY EFFORT (N. Nishio) raced wide throughout.

Leaving the 600m, EQUISSENTIAL (E. Ljung) shifted out to obtain clear running and bumped SKY EFFORT (N. Nishio) on 2 occasions.

Race 3: Charlton Tyres Class 2 H'cap – 1625m

Trainer A. McRae was reprimanded for failing to declare a rider for GUNS BLAZING by the prescribed time.

Due to riding commitments at Eagle Farm, S. Bogenhuber was unable to fulfil her engagement on SHINZAGZAG and was replaced by N. Yamada. Trainer’s representative Mr M. Currie was advised that a fine of $100 would be imposed for failing to properly engage a rider for SHINZAGZAG.

GURU BAY (R. Goltz) stood flatfooted at the start and lost ground.

Shortly after the start, FIERY GIRL (B. Evans) threw its head in the air when being restrained and then commenced to race keenly in the early stages.

Passing the 1400m, ROMAN SILVER (J. Orman) was crowded for room between TIMELESS TALE (B. Stower), which shifted in slightly, and SHINZIGZAG (N. Yamada), which shifted out. As a result of this tightening, ROMAN SILVER was buffeted and became unbalanced. In the circumstances, both B. Stower, rider of TIMELESS TALE, and N. Yamada, rider of SHINZIGZAG, were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

KING KAIYO (N. Nishio) raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Near the 1000m, THAT SNOW ATHLETE (A. Fancourt) improved on to the heels of TIMELESS TALE (B. Stower) and was eased for a short distance.

FIERY GIRL and ROMAN SILVER (J. Orman) raced wide for the majority of the race.

GUNS BLAZING (J. Greacen) hung out rounding the home turn.

TIMELESS TALE was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn and then a short distance later shifted out to obtain clear running and made heavy contact with GURU BAY, resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced.

FIERY GIRL and ROMAN SILVER (J. Orman) raced wide for the majority of the race.

SHINZIGZAG was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

TIMELESS TALE raced in restricted room between GUNS BLAZING and SHINZIGZAG over the concluding stages.

Stewards questioned B. Evans and trainer’s representative Mr M. Currie with regard to FIERY GIRL settling further back in the field which was in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. After taking evidence, trainer B. Currie was fined the sum of $200 for failing to notify stewards that it was their intention to ride the mare with cover tonight as he was of the opinion that there was significant speed in the race and that the mare had not raced since 6 June.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. Stower regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of TIMELESS TALE. She stated that the mare has had a long preparation and felt that TIMELESS TALE had not backed up from its recent win on 28 June. She added that travelling behind the leader she placed her mount under pressure from the 600m. She further added that she was disappointed for a run approaching the home turn when GUNS BLAZING shifted in, however TIMELESS TALE then failed to sprint and was somewhat disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of TIMELESS TALE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 4: Clive Berghofer Land Sales QTIS 2yo Maiden H'cap – 1050m

TAKE A GUESS (S. Bogenhuber) raced ungenerously in the early stages and near the 700m got its head up when restrained from the heels of AERIAL PING PONG (R. Goltz).

Apprentice R. Vigar, rider of MISS SO GOOD, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 500m he permitted his mound to shift in when insufficiently clear of CRANKITUP (A. Fancourt), which as a result was tightened for room and forced to check and as a result lost ground. Apprentice Vigar was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 5 July and to expire at midnight, 13 July.

ANGEL OF LIBERTY (J. Orman) raced wide throughout.

ICE COLD (R. Ride) raced greenly in the home straight.

Race 5: Glenmar Fuels Maiden H'cap – 1625m

When racing extremely wide passing the crossing at the 1500m, GOGERTY (J. Orman) was permitted to stride forward and obtain the lead near the 1300m.

Near the 1200m, when the pace of the race eased, NODLAND (R. Ride) commenced to overrace with its head in the air for a short distance.

Passing the 1000m, COUP D’ETAT (N. Nishio) made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.

ROAD TRAIN ROSIE (B. Stower) was caught wide in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 800m, LIDO (A. Fancourt) raced in restricted room between COUP D’ETAT and ROAD TRAIN ROSIE, which shifted in marginally, resulting in LIDO having to be momentarily steadied. B. Stower, rider of ROAD TRAIN ROSE, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

Apprentice R. Ride, rider of NODLAND, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 150m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of COUP D’ETAT, which as a result was tightened for room and checked, losing its rightful running. R. Ride was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings to commence at midnight, 18 July, the expiration of a previous suspension incurred at Doomben on 2 July, and to expire at midnight, 29 July.

Stewards questioned apprentice N. Nishio with regards to the tactics he adopted and overall performance of COUP D’ETAT. He stated that his instructions were to have the horse in a midfield position and to obtain cover if possible. He added that he obtained a position behind NODLAND after settling however when the pace of the race eased near the 1200m COUP D’ETAT was forced to race further back in the field than he had anticipated. He further added that his mount travelled reasonably until approaching the 600m where his mount lost ground despite his efforts. He went on to add that his mount responded to his riding from rounding the home turn however met with interference leaving the 200m, which had an overall effect on the performance. Stewards after considering the evidence of N. Nishio and viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, were satisfied with his riding throughout the race and were in agreement that COUP D’ETAT was left flatfooted when the pace of the race quickened approaching the 600m and did not respond to apprentice Nishio’s riding. Stewards in the circumstances accepted the explanation.

When asked to comment on the performance of ROAD TRAIN ROSIE, which performed below market expectations, apprentice B. Stower stated that the filly never travelled comfortably throughout the race and when placed under pressure did not respond to her riding. She added that in her opinion the filly had come to the end of it's preparation.

Stewards intend to question trainer N. Saunders at a later date with regards to the improved performance of LIDO.

Race 6: Wimmers Premium Soft Drinks Class 3 Plate – 1050m

UP AND ABLAZE (J. Orman) was slow to begin and lost ground.

Stewards questioned J. Orman, the rider of subsequent winner UP AND ABLAZE, as to the reason he did not take advantage of a run between LEAPS AND BOUNDS (S. Bogenhuber) and LORD BEAUFORT (A. Fancourt) leaving the 200m, instead electing to shift out wider at that point. J. Orman stated that he felt that LEAPS AND BOUNDS was shifting out and sensed his running would be tightened and as a result shifted out wider to obtain a run. After viewing the stewards patrol footage, J. Orman conceded that he had made an error in judgement in not taking the run that was available and agreed with the stewards’ opinion. Stewards advised J. Orman that as a metropolitan apprentice he would be expected to show greater judgement when placed in similar circumstances.
