Race 1: Clive Berghofer Benchmark 70 H'cap – 1050m

HEART OF MELBOURNE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Had to be steadied to avoid the heels of another runner passing the 600m. Inquiry into disappointing performance. Rider S. Eilbeck advised that she was instructed to obtain a forward position if possible, however after beginning awkwardly was obliged to settle further back in the field than anticipated. She added that when asked for an effort to improve into the race from the 600m, the gelding ran on for a short distance, however tired over the concluding stages and proved somewhat disappointing. Apprentice Eilbeck further stated that as this was the gelding’s second-up start from a significant spell, the gelding would gain an obvious fitness benefit from today’s performance.

SEZWHO – Obliged to race 3 wide throughout.

OLYMPIA’S FLAME – On return to scale rider A. Fancourt reported that her mount had a tendency to lay in during the event.

Race 2: IJC Class 2 H'cap - 1625m

LUCKS IN – Raced keenly when rounding the turn near the 1300m.

MR PEPPERS: On return to scale S. Bogenhuber advised that due to the fast tempo of the race in the early stages she settled further back in the field than she anticipated. She added that her mount was under pressure a considerable distance from home, which she attributed to the horse racing dour tonight, and advised trainer S. Iverson that the gelding may be better suited in races over further distance than tonight’s event. Mr Iverson agreed with the statement by S. Bogenhuber and advised it was now his intention to step the horse up in distance for its next start if possible.

MAGIC GLENYCE: Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Fancourt with respect to the tempo set in the early stages. She advised she was instructed to obtain a forward position, however after being caught wide early, she allowed her mount to stride forward in an endeavour to comply with these instructions, which she was able to do, however this resulted in her setting a faster tempo than she ideally wanted to. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 3: Harvey Black Group Cup RQ Summer Provincial Series BM 75 H'cap (0MW) – 1300m

GET ON – Raced wide throughout.

TINTS – Stewards questioned B. Stower in relation to the tactics adopted in the early stages, with particular reference as to whether there was opportunity to maintain a trailing position behind JACK’S BACK rather than allow SIPPIN’BUNDY to cross her and obtain this position near the 1200m. Apprentice Stower advised that after beginning well it was her intention to trail JACK’S BACK through the race however, in her opinion, TINTS failed to muster sufficient early speed to maintain this position. Apprentice Stower added that she was reluctant to vigorously ride the mare at that point of the race as, in her opinion, TINTS has previously had a tendency to overrace during races when ridden in this manner. Stewards in noting the explanation tendered by apprentice Stower, advised her that, in the circumstances, in their opinion, she should have made greater effort to maintain the trailing position behind JACK’S BACK, which would have afforded her a more forward position in the event.

Race 4: Cosmetic Elegance Maiden H'cap – 1200m

HOLD ME – Tightened for room at the start.

ROCKIANA – Began awkwardly and then was steadied from the heels of another runner shortly after the start.

ACAUDAL – Steadied from heels shortly after the start.

MIDNIGHT ALLURE – Laid out rounding the home turn and then shifted wider on the track under hard riding in the home straight.

AHA I SEE – Raced wide during the race.

SWEET CRACKER – Raced wide during the race.

Race 5: Three Little Monkeys/Genesis Sleep Care Maiden H'cap – 1200m

JUNIOR HEIST – Stewards accepted the explanation for S. Apthorpe being unable to fulfil his engagement on the horse. B. Stower was substituted as the rider of the horse. Trainer M. Wilson advised that following the poor performance of the horse tonight it was now his intention that the gelding leave his stable.

POOKIES GRIN – Declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 6.40 pm. Trainer P. Facoory was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for the horse prior to its next race start.

CANTBUYBETTER – Trainer B. Currie was fined $200 for the late declaration of wlinkers to be added to the gear of the colt.

VALDA – Raced ungenerously for a short distance after being crossed by another runner.

EXCITING DOLL – Improved onto heels of another runner near the 700m and lost ground.

RAZZLING DAZZLER – After beginning well settled in a more forward position than at its most recent starts.

BRIGLIDORO – Raced wide throughout.

EXCITING DOLL – Rider K. Yoshida was reprimanded for using his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m.
