Approaching the 350m DIASCO (J. Letherby) shifted out to obtain clear running and in so doing took PRESLEY and MR MAYFAIR wider on the track.

Stewards spoke to jockey A. Best regarding the performance of PRESLEY. Jockey Best stated that in his opinion PRESLEY performed well below expectations and he believed that the circumstances surrounding the poor performance were that blinkers and pacifiers were worn for the first time and in his opinion the horse was very unfamiliar with them, which may have contributed to the horse wanting to lay out throughout and not concentrating as it should have on the run. He also believed other contributing factors were that the horse was slow to begin, whereas it is normally a very good beginner, as well as the fact that the horse was caught wide after leaving the 400m and rounding the home turn and failed to run on when placed under pressure. Stewards also spoke with trainer M. Webb who stated that the horse certainly did race below par, however he believed that the most concerning fact was that the horse was not able to back up week after week and he attributed the decision to race the horse two weeks in a row to the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination of PRESLEY revealed that the horse was slightly lame in the nearside hind leg. Mr Webb was advised that prior to the horse’s next start a veterinary certificate of fitness would be requred.

Stewards, after viewing the film, reminded jockey A. Taylor, the rider of SLUGSBROTHERNUGGET, of her obligation to ride her mounts to the line.

Jockey A. Merritt, the rider of SECRET TOM, was reprimanded for contravening AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii).

On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on MY TINKERBEL be refunded, with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 11 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply. Stewards took this decision under AR. 201 after consultation with the trainer T. Malseed and also acting on veterinary advice which confirmed that the horse had sustained a fracture to the near shoulder. Stewards interviewed jockey Kehoe as to the circumstances regarding the fall. Jockey Kehoe stated that certainly no other rider was to blame and that at the 100m the horse became slightly awkward and fell, with no warning that anything was amiss with the gelding. J. Keho was examined by the Club doctor and was cleared to leave the course. Stewards advised J. Kehoe he would require a medical clearance prior to riding again.
