Stewards were approached by Mr J. Dawes, the trainer of BUSKER and WINABELLE (Race 7), with a request to scratch both horses due to the inclement weather conditions and his concerns for the horses’ wellbeing. Stewards questioned Mr Dawes at length with regards to his reasoning and in this interview trainer Dawes stated that BUSKER had been acting very peculiar in the hours leading up to the race meeting and he believed that the horse would not race well and therefore sought late scratching. With regards to WINABELLE, he stated that the horse was having its first start on this track and even though it had trialed on two occasions he believed that the prevailing weather conditions were not suitable for this horse to have its first start. Stewards drew to trainer Dawes’ attention that the weather conditions have been forecast for some time and that he had had every opportunity to withdraw his horses prior to the scratching deadline if he had wished. Stewards denied his application to scratch both horses and instructed him that both horses must be on course by the required time. Stewards also had the horse BUSKER vetted prior to the race to ascertain its suitability to race and the Club veterinary surgeon cleared the horse to take its place in the field.
