Stewards today continued an inquiry into the poor performance of JARAMAN ROSE (Race 7 – TTC 10.04.10), which had left the course before undergoing a veterinary examination.
Trainer R. Kirwin was questioned at the Downs office on Monday, 12 April 2010, and advised that a veterinary examination carried out today revealed the horse to have a wind sucking condition and required a veterinary procedure to correct the problem.
Mr Kirwin was advised that the horse would be required to barrier trial before racing again.
Mr Kirwin was also reprimanded for failing to ensure the horse remained on course at least 30 minutes after the race.
Stewards today continued an inquiry into a complaint lodged by trainer T. Sears in relation to an alleged incident involving trainer E. Hayes in the stabling area at the ITC race meeting on 19 March 2010.
After hearing further evidence from both trainers, it was decided that they each be severely reprimanded and advised to ensure they conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
FROM TTC 10.04.10 – Race 7: Jockey N. Tomizawa pleaded guilty to using his whip on consecutive occasions prior to reaching the 100m when riding DIAMOND ZAH.
Whilst taking into account N. Tomizawa’s poor record, it was decided that in the circumstances a fine of $300 apply.
FROM TTC 10.04.10: Jockey J. Kehoe was reprimanded for striking his mount BULLISH TREASURE on 7 occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100m of the event.
FROM ITC 14.04.10: Apprentice A. Butler was fined $200 under AR. 85B for failing to fulfil his engagement on RIOQUALO in Race 5 at this meeting.
Race 1: SOUTHERN CROSS FORD MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
1st – Topping 2nd – Voluntary 3rd – Lonesome Day 4th – Sam’s Crossing
Track temperature: 46 degrees celsius
VOLUNTARY (J. Holder) jumped out at the start and made contact with DEVIL’S ANGEL (K. Banks).
THE PINK PONY (M. Speers) was tightened for room on jumping away between CLASSIC SCENE (A.Taylor), which shifted out, and LONESOME DAY (S. Katsidis), which shifted in.
Near the 800m CLASSIC SCENE, which was inclined to overrace, shifted out across the heels of DEVIL’S ANGEL. CLASSIC SCENE was then obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event.
Race 2: THE BERNBOROUGH CLUB CLASS 3 PLATE – 1625M
1st – Lovmieko 2nd – Lucky Toss 3rd – Artsecrets 4th – Argenteum
Track temperature: 46 degrees celsius
Trainer T. Malseed advised stewards that R. Hinricks will be instructed to ride SARISTA closer to the lead today if circumstances permit.
DON CARMELLO (B. Hull) jumped out at the start.
ARTSECRETS (M. Abe) jumped awkwardly.
DON CARMELLO got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously approaching the first turn.
M. Abe, the rider of ARTSECRETS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 850m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of ARGENTEUM (P. Wolfgram) resulting in the horse having to be checked. M. Abe’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 17 April, and expire at midnight on Friday, 30 April 2010.
Near the 350m LUCKY TOSS had to be steadied when it attempted to shift to the inside of LOVMIEKO where there was not fully sufficient room.
When questioned as to the performance of LUCKY TOSS, S. Katsidis explained that the horse began well, however he allowed it to settle as is its customary pattern of racing, but as runners progressed to the first turn the horse seemed to lose interest and as a result, racing towards the 1200m, LOVMIEKO (B. Wallace) was able to take a position forward of him on the rails. He added that approaching the 1200m he elected to ease away from the rails, however the horse was not travelling well and DON CARMELLO, which was racing to his outside, was able to dictate him back towards the rails behind LOVMIEKO. S. Katsidis further explained that the horse never travelled well at any stage from the 800m until near the 400m from where it was held up for clear running until approaching the 100m.
Race 3: MARRIOTT HOTEL BRISBANE QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1050M
1st – Lady Leo 2nd – Lone Assassin 3rd – Ulmarra 4th – Winds Of Fire
Track temperature: 46 degrees celsius.
Trainer K. Maund was fined $100 under LR. 70 for failing to declare P. Wolfgram as the rider of FIRST OPTION by the prescribed time.
SWIFT SANDS (N. Tomizawa), which jumped away awkwardly, and FIRST OPTION (P. Wolfgram), which shifted out, made heavy contact after the start.
ULMARRA (M. O'Brien) jumped awkwardly, losing ground.
LISSOY’S LASS (S. Richardson) was slow to jump.
LONE ASSASSIN (M. Palmer) jumped out at the start and brushed PAGODA (N. Yamada).
When questioned as to the seemingly disappointing performance of LISSOY’S LASS, S. Richardson stated that after travelling approximately 200m the horse became awkward in its action and felt that it had been galloped on by a runner behind and after that the horse did not travel well from that point onwards and was eased out of the race over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination confirmed that the horse had been galloped on and sustained a laceration to the nearside hind leg. Trainer R. Coveney was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for LISSOY’S LASS before it is permitted to race again.
A post-race veterinary examination of SNIPPETS SECRET, which did not race up to expectations, revealed that the horse was lame in the nearside foreleg. Trainer P. Cox was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required before the horse races again. Mr Cox indicated that the horse would in all probability be spelled.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of FIRST OPTION, P. Wolfgram stated that the horse never travelled well at any stage and did not seem comfortable on the track. Trainer Mrs K. Maund indicated that she would review the horse’s current preparation and may give the horse a short spell before continuing with the preparation. A post-race veterinary examination of FIRST OPTION revealed no abnormalities.
Race 4: YALUMBA WINES CLASS 3 PLATE – 1000M
1st – Silver Scholar 2nd – Rama Kaho 3rd – Deltarara 4th – Creme Latte
Track temperature: 44 degrees celsius.
BIANCA BLUES (N. Tomizawa) and MY TINKERBEL (M. Abe) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
SEEYOU SEEYOU (N. Yamada) and DELTARARA (M. Cahill) were slow into stride.
MYSTIC MOUNTAIN (M. O'Brien), which compounded over the latter stages, was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported that the horse had suffered cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer R. Kirwin was advised that the horse must be passed at a barrier trial and also he must provide the results of an ECG.
M. Abe, the rider of MY TINKERBEL, was reprimanded under AR. 135A for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.
CREME LATTE bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer N. Saunders was advised that, under AR. 53A, CREME LATTE would be barred from racing for 3 months. A swab sample was taken from CREME LATTE.
Race 5: 7 NEWS QTIS 600 2YO PLATE – 1300M
1st – Miss Imagica 2nd – Equissential 3rd – Cavaliered 4th – Castle Express
Track temperature: 39 degrees celsius.
CAVALIERED (M. Cahill) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with TRUE BLUE ANGEL (C. Munce). A short distance after the start CAVALIERED veered out abruptly causing TRUE BLUE ANGEL again to be checked and PHANTOMOFTHEOPERA (B. Stewart) and IT’S THIRSTY WORK (C. Whiteley) were both forced wider and inconvenienced.
NOELA’S ROMP (K. Banks) was caught wide after the start and was obliged to raced wide for the entire event.
For some distance near the 1000m LAMBERT (C. Maund) was inclined to pull hard.
CASTLE EXPRESS (S. Katsidis), when caught three wide leaving the 1000m, was also inclined to overrace and resented being restrained as S. Katsidis attempted to take a position one wide.
Near the 200m NOELA’S ROMP was steadied momentarily as CASTLE EXPRESS (S. Katsidis) shifted out slightly.
When questioned as to the performance of CAVALIERED, M. Cahill stated that the horse shifted out abruptly shortly after the start and then, whilst it travelled well in the middle stages, he allowed it to travel where comfortable without bustling the horse and when asked for an effort from the 600m the horse did not respond as expected. Trainer R. Heathcote added that the horse was having its first start on the cushion track and did not appear to be entirely comfortable on the surface.
Race 6: XXXX BITTER TOOWOOMBA CUP H’CAP – 2100M
1st – Yield Curve 2nd – Royal Hope 3rd – Jonka Tiki 4th – Body Double
Track temperature: 35 degrees celsius.
Correct weight was delayed to allow A. Best, the rider of 5th placegetter TRIPITZ, an opportunity to view the photo finish for 5th. J. Holder, the rider of 4th placegetter BODY DOUBLE, also exercised his right to view the stewards’ head-on footage to ascertain if he had grounds to protest against 3rd placegetter JONKA TIKI (M. Palmer). After viewing the film, J. Holder did not proceed.
SPECTACULAR PIC (D. Green) and ROYAL HOPE (J. Taylor) were tightened on jumping away between EEDEEAL (A. Spinks), which jumped inwards, and TELESTAH LA VISTAH (M. Hellyer), which jumped outwards.
Rounding the first turn, as the pace eased, JONKA TIKI improved on to the heels of TELESTAH LA VISTAH and shifted out.
Rounding the first turn ROYAL HOPE, which was pulling hard, improved on to the heels of TRIPITZ (A. Best). DON VITO (P. Wolfgram), which was following, shifted out and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of DRUMSHANBO (C. Munce).
On straightening DRUMSHANBO, which had been wide on the track, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ROYAL HOPE, which shifted out away from BODY DOUBLE when that horse was taken out by JONKA TIKI and TRIPITZ which shifted out from behind the heels of TELESTAH LA VISTAH to improve.
When questioned as to the performance of UNCLE JAN, S. Katsidis reported that approaching the 800m he elected to follow JUSSEMI (B. Stewart) when that horse moved off the rails, however his horse did not seem to be travelling well at that point and he elected to move to the inside of JUSSEMI as UNCLA JAN was not travelling well enough to sustain a long run wide on the track. He added that after moving to the inside the horse had difficulty making ground up the hill and whilst making moderate ground on straightening he felt that the horse was not suited to the track.
SPECTACULAR PIC, which compounded from the 800m, was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported the horse to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer J. Waters indicated that he would recommend to the owners that the horse’s current racing program be reviewed.
When questioned as to the performance of DRUMSHANBO, C. Munce stated that the horse struggled to make ground under the big weight between the 800m and the home turn. Trainer M. Nolan agreed that the horse, from the wide barrier, had no option other than to settle back in the field and that when asked to make ground in the middle stages under its big weight, the horse laboured.
JUSSEMI compounded over the latter stages of the race and did not finish the race off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination of JUSSEMI revealed the gelding to be lame off foreleg. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that he would need to provide a veterinary clearance before the horse races again.
The veterinary surgeon reported that JONKA TIKI had blood in its mouth post-race.
A. Best, the rider of TRIPITZ, was reprimanded under LR. 49 for failing to seek permission from stewards prior to leaving the course
Race 7: XXXX GOLD WEETWOOD H’CAP – 1200M

IMA JOKER (M. Palmer), POOR JUDGE (C. Munce) and SEEN IM (M. Hellyer) were tightened on jumping away between FANGLES (J. Taylor), which jumped outwards, and ULLADULLA (M. Wood), which shifted in.
Near the 900m SEEN IM (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied when it shifted in on to the heels of FANGLES.
Near the 700m FANGLES, when racing in restricted room, seemed somewhat reluctant to hold its position inside of DRENALIN (B. Stewart), which shifted in momentarily. Stewards acknowledged that whilst FANGLES was not racing comfortably at the time, B. Stewart was nonetheless advised to provide more room in future.
Passing the 200m VOCALIC (P. Wolfgram) was momentarily tightened for room by SOMMERSEA DRIVE (M. Cahill), which shifted in to obtain clear running. M. Cahill was cautioned and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 8: ZAZI MINERAL MAKEUP CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Huckleberry Dane 2nd – Retrospect 3rd – Carry Me Bluey 4th – Lonesome Tycoon
Track temperature: 23 degrees celsius.
CARRY ME BLUEY (C. Gilby) shifted out away from DIRTY MARTINI (M. Cahill) at the start and made contact with MATALAN (N. Evans), forcing it out on to PROTO (J. Wood).
Near the 800m CARRY ME BLUEY shifted out from behind the heels of STOPSTART (K. Yoshida) and made contact with VETTORI’S IMAGE (C. Whiteley).
Approaching the 800m DIRTY MARTINI commencd to pull hard and had to be steadied off the heels of RETROSPECT (C. Maund) which had assumed the position forward of it.

Near the 700m PROTO commenced to pull hard and when being restrained off the heels of DIRTY MARTINI shifted out and became unbalanced when it made contact with LONESOME TYCOON (L. Cheshire), forcing that runner out on to BIAN SPOILT (N. Tomizawa).
