HOLY APOLLO (S. Guymer) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ROGUES, R. McMahon stated that the horse overraced in the early and middle stages of the event but was under pressure from the 800m. Trainer Ms R. Pereira stated that the blinkers were being added to the horse again tonight and in her opinion were a contributing factor to the horse overracing. She further added that the horse seems to race well when able to lead clearly, however does not perform up to the same standard when racing in behind other runners and in her opinion the mare resents the kickback coming from the track. She further stated it would be the intention to reconsider racing ROGUES on this track, however should they reconsider racing ROGUES on the synthetic surface, the instruction would be to lead clearly. Stewards noted the explanation for future reference.

A post-race veterinary examination of CHEAPSKATERUBI, which tired badly over the final 500m of the event revealed no abnormalities. When questioned regarding the matter, trainer D. Peoples confirmed his disappointment with the horse’s performance and advised stewards it would be the intention to have further blood tests carried out on the horse. Stewards instructed the trainer to notify them of the results of those tests.

Track temperature: 10 degrees celsius.

CRAIGLEA TINA (K. Wharton) had a tendency to race greenly in the early stages of the event.

The saddle of CRAFTY'S LAST (K. Ashton) shifted forward at the 700m, placing the rider at a disadvantage which prevented her from riding the horse out over the final 200m.

Near the 700m HIDDEN TREASURE (R. McMahon) blundered and clipped the heels of CRAIGLEA SHERRY (B. Richardson).

Following this event, A. Best was stood down by the Club’s medical officer due to illness. A. Best was advised that he must produce a medical clearance before he resumes race riding.

INTEREST (P. Wolfgram) raced wide for the majority of the event.

FLOWER CHARIOT (R. McMahon) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.

Apprentice J. Letherby, the rider of ERIS, reported that he had difficulty controlling the mare during the event due to the reins slipping from his grasp during running. As a result, ERIS improved up on to the heels of CRAIGLEA ROSE (J. Kropp) near the 1100m and shifted out. INTEREST and IRON HAWK, which were trailing, were both inconvenienced.

Stewards questioned apprentice A. Butler and trainer Ms R. Wilkins regarding the tactics adopted on HEZA GURU in the early stages of the event which saw the horse settle in a rearward position which was in contrast to the recent racing pattern of that horse. The trainer advised that the instructions were to go forward on the horse to lead. Apprentice Butler stated that the horse was fractious in the barriers and was slightly slow to begin, which resulted in the horse in his opinion losing the opportunity to obtain the lead position and he elected to allow the horse to settle in a postion towards the rear of the field rather than urge it forward as he was of the opinion this could then cause HEZA GURU to overrace. After considering the matter, stewards gave A. Butler the benefit of the doubt regarding his ride and noted the explanation. A. Butler also expressed concerns with the action of HEZA GURU after the event, however a veterinary examination of the horse found no abnormalities at the time of examination.
