PURE ACT, DEE’S PRIDE (M. O'Brien) and STRIKING ROSE (A.Taylor) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Stewards inquired into the riding tactics adopted by apprentice S. Egan, rider of CHECK THE LEADER, in particular his reason for losing ground when initially positioned midfield during the early stages until a point leaving the 800m, which resulted in CHECK THE LEADER racing in last position at that point of the race. Stewards also sought an explanation as to why he was unable to obtain clear running from the 300m until the 100m. Apprentice Egan stated that he had been instructed to ride CHECK THE LEADER quietly in a rearward position, as is the horse’s racing pattern, and this was the reason for him losing ground during the middle stages. He added he had been instructed to ride for luck and to improve to the inside rounding the home turn. Apprentice Egan explained that he had intended to improve to the inside of MOXICON rounding the home turn where a run had presented itself, however he felt that as the run closed he was obliged to then shift out around the heels of both MOXICON (K. Yoshida) and IGGY’S GIRL (N. Yamada). Trainer P. Sexton confirmed the instructions, however voiced his surprise with the horse losing ground when in a favourable position during the early stages.
