Race 1: XXXX GOLD CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Moxicon 2nd – Dusty’s Felt 3rd – Sir Knight 4th – Ocean Outlaw

Track temperature: 40 degrees celsius

Jockey S. Drake advised stewards that she was unable to arrive on course in time to fulfil her engagement on TUSCAN IMAGE. As no other rider was available to ride the horse, TUSCAN IMAGE was declared a late scratching at 3.35 p.m. Due to betting being delayed, no wagers were taken on TUSCAN IMAGE and as such no deductions were applicable. At a subsequent inquiry S. Drake pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 85B of failing to fulfil her engagement on TUSCAN IMAGE. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account S. Drake’s previous unblemished record in regard to fulfilling riding engagements, however as the horse had been denied the opportunity of competing they deemed the appropriate penalty in all the circumstances to be a fine of $300.

Correct weight was delayed to afford apprentice T. Fujinuma, the rider of 2nd placegetter DUSTY’S FELT, an opportunity to view the stewards’ patrol video to ascertain whether he wished to lodge an objection against MOXICON (N. Yamada) being declared the winner. After viewing the video, apprentice Fujinuma indicated that he did not wish to proceed with the matter.

BOOFHEAD (K. Yoshida) and ORHTAC (J. Letherby) made contact on jumping away when both horses shifted ground.

MAGIC PEARL (K. Banks), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly.

ALL LINED UP (M. O'Brien), OCEAN OUTLAW (W. Clasohm) and SET TO TRADE (N. Tomizawa) were all slow to begin.

Near the 1500m ALL LINED UP shifted in slightly and had to be steadied from the heels of SIR KNIGHT (P. Wolfgram).

BOOFHEAD overraced in the early and middle stages and near the 1200m had to be steadied from the heels of HEZA GURU (J. Kehoe), which was also overracing.

SIR KNIGHT raced wide for the majority of the event.

Approaching the 1000m ORHTAC improved on to the heels of MOXICON (N. Yamada) and had to be steadied.

Leaving the 400m ALL LINED UP was momentarily crowded for room between BOOFHEAD and ORHTAC which shifted in slightly.

Near the 400m DUSTY’S FELT (T. Fujinuma) shifted out, bumping MOXICON.

Over the final 200m DUSTY’S FELT shifted out under pressure and on a number of occasions made contact with MOXICON, which had a tendency to lay in under pressure.

Race 2: SOUTHERN CROSS AUTOMOTIVE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1050M
1st – Canadian Joy 2nd – Mayamac 3rd – Camphor 4th – Monching

Track temperature: 35 degrees celsius

FLASHING FLORA was a late scratching at 9.10 a.m. on veterinary advice. Trainer T. Gollan was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for the mare before it races again.

MAYAMAC (N. Yamada) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with BERNADECIO (K. Yoshida), resulting in it shifting out making contact with CRYPTOLOGIST (K. Ashton).

OURMIKEYMAC (T. Fujinuma) and REAL AURA (J. Kehoe) were slow to begin.

CAMPHOR (N. Tomizawa) raced wide for the majority of the event.

OURMIKEYMAC commenced to hang in leaving the 500m and approaching the 200m both OURMIKEYMAC and CRYPTOLOGIST were tightened for room when attempting the same run between MONCHING (K. Forrester) and BONZA BRONZE (B. Richardson). This incident was further excacerbated by BONZA BRONZE shifting in slightly a short distance later. Apprentice B. Richardson was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances. OURMIKEYMAC continued to hang in in the home straight.

Near the 100m MAYAMAC became unbalanced and shifted in and then a short distance later shifted out.

CRYPTOLOGIST and CAMPHOR lost their off fore plates during running.


Race 3: 7 NEWS CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Race The Shadow 2nd – Grain Trader 3rd – Espionage 4th – Bridal Gift

Track temperature: 33 degrees celsius.

Correct weight was delayed to afford A. Taylor, the rider of 5th placegetter ISTAAR, an opportunity to view the stewards’ patrol video to ascertain whether she wished to lodge an objection against ESPIONAGE (J. Letherby) being placed 3rd by the Judge. After viewing the video, jockey Taylor indicated that she did not wish to proceed with the matter.

ITSA PUNT (K. Yoshida) jumped out at the start inconveniencing BRIDAL GIFT (K. Banks).

GOLDEN GLEAMS (M. Abe) was slow to begin.

WAASIES SHADOW (K. Ashton) began awkwardly.

Approaching the 400m BRIDAL GIFT had to be momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of GOLDEN GLEAMS, which shifted out to improve.

Approaching the 100m ISTAAR (A.Taylor) shifted in under pressure and had to be steadied.

A post-race veterinary examination of RACE THE SHADOW (T. Fujinuma) revealed traces of blood in the horse’s nearside nostril. Under the provisions of AR. 53A(7) stewards advised trainer P. Sexton that before RACE THE SHADOW is permitted to race again it must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

Race 4: BARBARA SEXTON MEMORIAL CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1500M
1st – Etching 2nd – Channel Crossing 3rd – Norse Code 4th – Silver Whisper

Track temperature: 28 degrees celsius.

SMUGGLER'S INN (N. Yamada) began awkwardly and shifted in making contact with ARDMILAN (C. Eaton).

ETCHING (K. Mizobe) began awkwardly and shifted in making contact with SILVER WHISPER (P. Wolfgram).

Near the 400m LOSTRIS (K. Ashton), when racing in restricted room between SMUGGLER'S INN and UNDER CONSTRUCTION (K. Forrester), shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of UNDER CONSTRUCTION, turning that horse inwards. In this incident SMUGGLER'S INN shifted out slightly and TURN AND BURN (C. Gilby), which was racing to the outside of UNDER CONSTRUCTION, shifted in slightly resulting in both UNDER CONSTRUCTION and LOSTRIS racing in restricted room and LOSTRIS being forced across the heels of SMUGGLER'S INN, clipping that horse’s heels and blundering. Whilst stewards could not be satisfied that any one rider could be held responsible for the incident, nonetheless both N. Yamada (SMUGGLER'S INN) and C. Gilby were severely reprimanded and advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SMUGGLER'S INN, apprentice N. Yamada stated that the horse was uncharacteristically agitated prior to the event and although from the wide barrier he was forced to use the horse up in the early stages he was nonetheless disappointed with its performance tonight. Trainer M. Nolan’s stable representative Mr Cameron agreed with apprentice Yamada’s assessment and was also disappointed with the horse’s performance. Mr Cameron also gave an undertaking to stewards to report anything that comes to the stable’s attention that may have had an effect on the horse’s performance tonight. The veterinary surgeon reported that a post-race examination of SMUGGLER'S INN revealed the horse to be showing signs of having had a hard run, however no significant abnormalities were detected at the time of examination. Stewards noted the explanations.

Race 5: BOOK YOUR MELBOURNE CUP FUNCTION QTIS 3Y0 MAIDEN H’CAP – 850M
1st – Keway 2nd – Forever Gentle 3rd – Fallis 4th – Androcity

Track temperature: 25 degrees celsius.

CRASH BAM BOOM was shown in the racebook as wearing blinkers when that was incorrect, and the horse did not wear blinkers today.

Shortly after the start LIGHTNING SPENDER (B. Richardson), FOREVER GENTLE (N. Yamada), GREYZEEL (G. Geran), RED TORNADO (K. Ashton) and BUILT TOUGH (W. Clasohm) were all tightened for room between PURITY (N. Tomizawa) and CONSULATE (P. Wolfgram), which after beginning awkwardly and shifted in became unbalanced and continued to hang in despite the efforts of its rider. As a result of this incdent, GREYZEEL, RED TORNADO and BUILT TOUGH lost ground.

Race 6: DISCOUNT MEMBERSHIP NOW AVAILABLE MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M
1st – Honoured 2nd – Lasting Memory 3rd – Elope 4th – I Don’t Remember

Track temperature: 22 degrees celsius.

LITTLE SCHATZI (M. Abe) began very awkwardly, threw its head in the air and lost considerable ground. Trainer A. Jeynes was advised that LITTLE SCHATZI must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to race again.

ORCHARDTOWN QUEEN (N. Tomizawa) began awkwardly and lost ground.

JOANNE ELIZABETH (J. Letherby) was slow to begin.

ORCHARDTOWN QUEEN, which raced wide for the majority of the event, had a tendency to hang out throughout the event.

JOANNE ELIZABETH raced greenly for the majority of the event.

Race 7: XXXX BITTER MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M
1st – Yveline 2nd – Magic Turbo 3rd – Close Range 4th – Pinter

Track temperature: 21 degrees celsius.

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer M. O’Meara for the late declaration of W. Clasohm as the rider of MADAME VIOLET.

KAPPISH, which became fractious in the tie-up stalls and slipped over, was a late scratching at 6.55 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.

RICHMOND LAD (K. Forrester) jumped out at the start making contact with PINTER (K. Yoshida).

MADAME VIOLET (W. Clasohm) began awkwardly.

PINTER had to be steadied near the 800m when momentarily tightened for room by SEQUALO MIX (T. Fujinuma) which shifted in.

SEQUALO MIX and GREY MAMBO (C. Eaton) raced wide for the majority of the event.

CENT A SIGN (G. Geran) hung in across the heels of ESCALOTTE approaching the 600m and had to be steadied. CENT A SIGN continued to hang in in the home straight, proving difficult to ride out.

Race 8: WAGNERS CONCRETING MAIDEN H’CAP – 1500M
1st – Princess Wurabinda 2nd – Cobalt Blue 3rd – Silent Le Touch 4th – Cuban

Track temperature: 20 degrees celsius.

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer J. Heelan for the late declaration of K. Banks as the rider of OAXACA.

CUBAN (M. Abe) was slow to begin and threw its head in the air for a short distance after the start.

PROSCENIUM (J. Murphy), OAXACA (K. Banks) and SILENT LE TOUCH (J. Kehoe) all began awkwardly.

Near the 1300m CUBAN commenced to overrace and threw its head in the air .

SILENT LE TOUCH raced wide in the early and middle stages.

PROSCENIUM raced wide for the majority of the event.

SILENT LE TOUCH faltered leaving the 50m. A subsequent veterinary examination of SILENT LE TOUCH revealed the horse to be lame in its near foreleg. Trainer P. Facoory was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required before SILENT LE TOUCH is permitted to race again.

Jockey M. Abe pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he struck CUBAN with the whip in a forehand manner on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, 3 of which were in consecutive strides, and was fined the sum of $200.
