KUNNINKIK (T. Fujinuma) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. O’Brien regarding the disappointing performance of ARGENTEUM. She stated that after initially being slow to begin the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages, however when asked to quicken from the 700m, the gelding failed to respond to her riding and in her opinion was disappointing. Trainer N. Saunders stated that the horse had difficulty carrying weight and got back further in tonight’s race than he had expected, which resulted in ARGENTEUM failing to run on in the straight.

Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on SMARTY SMART and GREYS A ROCKIN were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 45 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 35 cents in the dollar on the value of place bets. Sears will be advised that a warning will be placed on the pre-race manners of GREYS A ROCKIN. Apprentice M. Abe, rider of GREYS A ROCKIN, was reprimanded for use of inappropriate language towards an official regarding this incident involving GREYS A ROCKIN.

Near the 1200m, MEDICI (T. Fujinuma) had to be steadied when cramped for room between PINTER (K. Yoshida) and SELBOURNE (K. Ashton), which shifted out.

Near the 700m, CONSULATE (W. Clasohm) shifted out, forcing PINTER (K. Yoshida) wider on the track. PINTER then raced wide from this point.

JHELUM (A.Taylor) shifted in and bumped KESTHIN (R. Goltz) near the 150m.

MEDICI raced wide throughout.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted by A. Taylor, rider of JHELUM, in particular the reason for her restraining that colt in the early and middle stages which resulted in JHELUM losing considerable ground and racing at the tail of the field. A. Taylor advised stewards that her instructions were to ride the horse quietly today as it had compounded badly at its last start when leading. She added that JHELUM jumped well today, however when placed upon heels she restrained JHELUM which resulted in it throwing its head in the air and racing extremely ungenerously. A. Taylor further added that approaching the 800m the horse commenced to settle and she then was able to make a run wide on the track leaving the 600m, and that the horse finished the race off well. Trainer M. Nolan confirmed the instructions, adding that JHELUM, in his opinion, is better suited when ridden quietly and that it was evident that when A. Taylor was carrying out those instructions the horse was reluctant to settle. Stewards after considering all the evidence accepted the explanations from both parties and advised trainer M. Nolan that they would be placing a warning against the racing manners of JHELUM.

Stewards sought an explanation from S. Drake, rider of FORZA POTENZA, regarding the poor performance of the horse. S. Drake stated that it was her intention to try and lead, however there was too much early pace in the race, which resulted in FORZA POTENZA settling in a midfield position. She added that the horse trevelled well until nearing the 550m when she received a bump from the runner to her outside and from that point onwards the horse failed to run on and proved most disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of FORZA POTENZA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards questioned apprentice T. Fujinuma in regards to the tactics adopted today whereby he led on PERFECT DAYS, setting a quick tempo. Apprentice Fujinuma stated this his instructions were to lead today and after the horse did not begin as well as he expected he urged his mount forward and was able to obtain the lead approaching the 1400m. T. Fujinuma added that a short distance later the horse commenced to race keenly throughout the middle stages and that he was unable to get the horse to relax and come back underneath him. He further added that PERFECT DAYS commenced to weaken from approaching the 400m, adding that the horse, in his opinion, was most disappointing. Trainer P. Sexton confirmed the instructions to lead tonight and added that, in his opinion, that the horse had failed to relax which he contributed to the horse weakening, and confirmed his disapointment in the horse’s performance. After considering all the evidence before them stewards were critical of apprentice T. Fujinuma’s riding in the early and middle stages in that, in their opnion, he could have made greater efforts in attempting to get his mount to settle. Stewards advised T.
