P. Wolfgram, rider of ISTAAR, explained that from the good barrier the mare raced in a more forward position than he would have liked and refused to settle during the race and pulled hard. He added that at its previous start he was able to race away from the rail and shifted out in the straight where the mare finished the race off nicely. Tonight he said ISTAAR appeared to resent other runners racing to his outside, and rounding the home turn when other horses improved to her outside, the mare appeared to shorten stride and did not respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination of ISTAAR revealed the mare to have a slight cough, however no other significant findings. The explanation was accepted.
