From Esk 7.7.12 – Adjourned inquiry – Race 5
Stewards today recommenced an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted by L. Appo, rider of RUNNING SOLO, with regards to that runner losing ground from the 1200m until near the 800m. The inquiry was adjourned on the day to have trainer B. Robinson present to provide evidence. L. Appo stated that his instructions were to ride the horse back in the field as it had performed well at its last run when ridden this way. He added that the gelding began well, however raced ungenerously a short distance after the start and would not settle, which resulted in his mount losing some ground. Trainer B. Robinson confirmed the instructions, adding that he was training the gelding to settle back in its races however was of the opinion that RUNNING SOLO raced too fresh on the day, which contributed to the horse overracing. In considering the evidence before them, stewards were of the opinion, that L. Appo, while carrying out the instructions and shifting in closer to the rail near the 1100m, made the turn awkwardly at that point when NOACHENKA hung out, resulting in L. Appo having to take precautionary action and steady his mount. Stewards found that RUNNING SOLO was unable to hold its posiiton from the 1100m until near the 900m, which stewards believed could be attributed to the apparent racing characteristics of the horse. In all the circumstances, stewards took no further action other than to remind L. Appo to ride his mounts in a manner which does not leave himself open to question. Trainer B. Robinson was advised that a warning would be placed on the manners of RUNNING SOLO.
