Race 1 Agricultural Requirements, Gatton Class 1 H'cap – 1200m

Track temperature – 18 degrees Celsius

STAR OF MAHER was declared a late scratching at 3.45 pm

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer S. Watters for apprentice R. Ride not to use the whip on SAYORI in the race.

On jumping, WALTZ WITH YOU (K. Yoshida) was steadied when crowded between PUKEKURA BOY (M. O'Brien) and LUCSTANA (N. Evans), which shifted out.

ROSEBROOK DANCER (M. Abe) was slow to begin.

Right at the winning post, SAYORI (R. Ride) was eased when crowded slightly by MISS TIPPI (B. Richardson), which shifted in.
Race 2: Deutz-Fahr QTIS 2yo Plate – 1200m

Track temperature – 18 degrees Celsius

WINCHESTER BULLET (J. Letherby) and OUTBACK LASS (R. Ride) were slow to begin.

In the early stages when endeavouring to be settled, REAL FAVULOUS (R. Goltz) got its head up.

For some distance approaching the 800m, BATTLEBRIDGE (B. Richardson) raced very keenly, resulting in its rider being in some difficulty. When being restrained BATTLEBRIDGE shifted out and caused WINCHESTER BULLET to be checked.

Race 3: John O’Brien Toyota, Gatton Maiden Plate – 1300m

Track temperature – 18 degrees Celsius

As S. Apthorpe failed to arrive in time to fulfil his engagement on CAMBO’S MATE, N. Tomizawa was substituted as the rider of that horse. The explanation tendered by S. Apthorpe was accepted.

No racing incidents.

Race 4: Rugby Farm Pty Ltd Benchmark 80 H'cap – 1625m

Track temperature – 17 degrees Celsius

For some distance approaching the 600m, PRIMED (M. O'Brien), when improving 3 wide, commenced to hang badly and made contact with TISANI BOY (N. Tomizawa) on a couple of occasions.

Apprentice R. Ride advised that GHOSTNTHEDARKNESS was crossed early and after doing so then raced keenly in the early stages on the heels of VIVAHEART (J. Letherby). She said after the 1200m, the horse travelled well, however from the 600m when the pace quickened, GHOSTNTHEDARKNESS did not respond and weakened in the straight. Apprentice Ride added that on pulling up the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer M. Nolan stated that GHOSTNTHEDARKNESS is a horse which has always been sound and was somewhat surprised with its post-race condition in that, in his opinion, it was quite distressed, indicative of the horse having a hard run. He said in hindsight he would have preferred that GHOSTNTHEDARKNESS was crossed in the early stages, with his rider electing to race away from the rail and letting it stride forward rather than restraining it as she did in the middle stages. Mr Nolan added the intentions prior to this evening were to contest the Toowoomba Cup, however after tonight’s disappointing performance, connections would reconsider those intentions. He also stated that he would have the horse undergo a veterinary examination tomorrow, including an endoscopic examination and undertook to report the results of such examination to stewards. A post race veterinary examination of GOHSTNTHEDARKNESS revealed the horse to be somewhat distressed after the race and its recovery was slower than normal, with an elevated heart rate.

Race 5: Lockyer Cricket Association Class 3 H'cap – 1200m

Track temperature – 17 degrees Celsius

ROBERT’S COMMAND (S. Payne) dipped on jumping away.

HALO’D BE THY NAME (B. Richardson) and BLOODED (M. O'Brien) were slow to begin.

After the 600m, SILVER COMMAND (S. Bogenhuber) endeavoured to shift out from behind ROBERT’S COMMAND and in doing so made heavy contact with COCK A HOOP (K. Yoshida) on a number of occasions before eventually succeeding in shifting that horse out to allow SILVER COMMAND to improve. Jockey S. Bogenhuber, rider of SILVER COMMAND, was severely reprimanded for the manner in which she endeavoured to shift SILVER COMMAND out and was told that her riding on this occasion bordered on that which the stewards may deem to be improper. She was further advised that the line drawn between riding competitively and/or improperly is one which she must be mindful of at all times and was told in slightly different circumstances she may be in breach of a serious riding rule.

For a considerable distance from the 500m, BLOODED (M. O'Brien) was held up behind LE MAX (S. Apthorpe) and TOWN DAZZLER (N. Tomizawa), and then continued to be inconvenienced until shifting to the inside of LE MAX to find clear running.

Race 6: Vince And Lorraine Hoger Benchmark 80 H'cap – 1050m

Track temperature – 17 degrees Celsius

Apprentice S. Payne and trainer T. Dougall were questioned regarding the tactics adopted on DR BARNARD. Apprentice Payne stated that DR BARNARD raced in a rearward position, as is usual and he had specifically been instructed by the trainer that the gelding had a short sprint and that he should endeavour to save ground at all times, including rounding the turn, before saving the horse up for one sprint in the straight. He said that with this in mind from the 500m he was reluctant to make use of DR BARNARD to improve as he didn’t want the horse compounding over the concluding stages. Trainer T. Dougall expressed dissatisfaction with the ride in that he had told apprentice Payne that DR BARNARD may need niggling along throughout the race to remain in touch, however he did not see that apprentice Payne endeavoured to follow this part of the instructions. He also stated that he would have preferred apprentice Payne to have allowed DR BARNARD to make up ground from the 500m rather than see it some distance off the main body of the field. Apprentice Payne conceded that he may have erred in the middle stages of the race, however he was mindful that the tempo set was significant and he was confident with the instructions in mind that DR BARNARD would have made up the ground easier than it did. He added that in the straight when riding the horse out it hung out badly and proved difficult to ride. Apprentice Payne was advised that for an apprentice with limited experience he may have misconstrued the instructions and also overdone the patience in waiting to improve as long as he did, particularly rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. He was told that stewards had in mind he was having his first ride on the horse and his relative inexperience, however he was advised that the ride had come under notice and his explanation would be recorded. Mr Dougall’s evidence was accepted.

Race 7: LDHS Staff Social Club Class 1 Plate – 1625m

Track temperature – 17 degrees Celsius

FLAGFALMENCO (R. Goltz) began very awkwardly.

Near the 400m, BLAKTAR (K. Yoshida) was steadied when crowded between SPURRING SPIRIT (N. Evans) and QUICKANDTHEDEAD (S. Bogenhuber), both of which shifted slightly.

N. Tomizawa reported that ONE TOUGH BABE hung out throughout the race, particularly on the turns and may not have run out the distance of tonight’s race.
