SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

The start of race one was delayed when stewards conducted an inspection of the track surface with a delegation of jockeys, after concerns were raised with the condition of the racing surface in the 825m chute. Following this inspection, Stewards in consultation with the committee of the club, deemed the 825m chute to be unsuitable for racing and as a result the distance of race 2 was shortened to 800m. All trainers were advised of the change in distance and were satisfied to run their respective runners.

Stewards permitted jockey C. Spry to ride half a kilogram over his allotted weight in races one and three and 1kg overweight as the rider of BERNADECIO in race 5 when no other suitable riders were available. Jockey Spry was replaced in race four as the rider of ANCHOR BOLT by J. Letherby when overweight. Jockey C. Spry was subsequently fined $300.

Stewards permitted apprentice N. Ogura to race a half a kilogram over his riding weight in races one and two. Stewards accepted Apprentice Ogura’s explanation for failing to claim down to his allocated riding weight.

Due to rider shortage at the meeting, stewards accepted the explanations for a number of trainers as to the late declarations of some riders.

Race 1 CHESTERFIELD & ASSOCIATED SPONSORS CLASS B HCAP 1100M:

Stewards questioned the reasons into trainer J. Byrne presenting BADBOYCURTIS without winkers today. Trainer J. Byrne advised that he was of the belief that he had removed winkers off the gelding’s gear. Based on this assurance, Stewards permitted BADBOYCURTIS to race without winkers. Subsequent inquires with the Trainers service centre established that winkers were part of the official gear worn by BADBOYCURTIS. Stewards in issuing a reprimand took into account Mr. Byrne’s very good record in relation to matters relating to this rule.

The start was delayed when I’M NO RUBY (C. Spry) needed re-saddling prior to entering the enclosure.

ASTRO NASCENTE (N. Morton) hung out during the early and middle stages and as a result raced wide throughout.

SPIDAZAM (B. Newport) began awkwardly.

IMA BRONZE (N. Yamada) was tightened for room at the start between SPIDAZAM and FLYING REBEL (E. Ljung) when both runners shifted ground.

Near the 600m, I’M NO RUBY had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of MINI STYLE (N. Ogura).

BADBOYCURTIS (J. Letherby) raced wide throughout.

Apprentice B. Newport reported on returning to scale that SPIDAZAM failed to negotiate the tight turning track and was unable to be fully tested.

Race 2 PHILP BRODIE GRAINS & ASSOCIATED SPONSORS MAIDEN PLATE SW 800M:

TOUR DU MONDE (B. Evans) began very awkwardly making heavy contact with the barrier partition and as a result lost considerable ground.

AT THE ROUGE (B. Newport) was tightened for room at the start between MY FRIEND IRMA (J. Letherby) and JUST LIKE ERROL (R. Payne) when both runners shifted ground.

CUPPA TEA LOVE (H. Phillips) shifted in abruptly shortly after the start and made heavy contact with CHILUKKI (E. Ljung). CUPPA TEA LOVE then shifted out abruptly making contact with the hindquarters of SAPPHIRE QUEST (L. Appo), which became unbalanced.

MY FRIEND IRMA hung out for the majority of the event and as a result raced wide throughout.

On returning to scale apprentice E. Ljung reported that CHILUKKI felt awkward in the hindquarters throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the mare was lame in both hind legs. Trainer L. Paton stated that it was her intention to retire the mare. Ms. Paton was nevertheless advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to CHILUKKI racing again.

A post-race veterinary examination of MANIC MARITA revealed the mare to be sore in the near fore fetlock. Trainer C. Rogers was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to MANIC MARITA racing again.

Race 3 SOUTHERN CROSS AUTOMOTIVE & ASSOCIATED SPONSORS QTIS MAIDEN HCAP 1200M:

SEQUELENE (H. Phillips) was fractious in the barriers.

DANCING INTHE WIND (B. Evans) and HOLLA LEGS (N. Yamada) were both tightened for room at the start between WONDERFUL TESS (J. Letherby) and SECRET OF THE ROCK (R. Payne), which shifted in.

SAHARA GOLD (L. Appo) and MISS SNOWSILL (C. Spry) were both slow to begin.

Jockey R. Goltz, the rider of LUCKY DUCKY, reported at scale that the horse was not comfortable on the tight turning track and had a tendency to lay out.

Near the 50m, SAHARA GOLD improved onto the heels of DANCING INTHE WIND and was forced to shift out.

Race 4 CROWE HORWATH WARRA CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1200M:

After all runners were loaded into the barriers, the start of the race was inadvertently activated and a false start was immediately called. All riders made immediate efforts to restrain and pull their mounts up, however all runners travelled varying distances with some completing a full circuit of the track. Stewards ordered that all runners be returned to the enclosure where they were examined by the club veterinary surgeon. Following this inspection GHOST TRAIN (E. Ljung) and SHADOW SHOW (L. Appo) were deemed unsuitable to race if it was ordered that the race be re-run. Therefore GHOST TRAIN and SHADOW SHOW were declared late scratching’s at 3:30pm by the order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice. The veterinary surgeon passed all other runners suitable to race, if the decision was made to re-run the event. Stewards in the presence of the veterinary surgeon consulted the trainers of all the remaining runners where the unanimous decision was expressed by connections of the desire to re-run this event. Therefore Stewards, after considering all the relevant factors elected to re-run this event with the starting time amended to 3:40pm.

Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on GHOST TRAIN and SHADOW SHOW be refunded with the following deductions applicable on bets placed prior to 3:30pm:

21 cents in the dollar for the win #4 (GAELSTORM)
27 cents in the dollar for the place of winner #4 (GAELSTORM)
27c cents in the dollar for 2nd place #2 (ANCHOR BOLT)

FLIGHT COMMAND (J. Missen) blundered at the start.

TRICKIN (N. Morton) was tightened for room at the start between ANCHOR BOLT (J. Letherby) and FLIGHT COMMAND, which shifted in, and as a result lost ground.

A post-race veterinary examination of TRICKIN revealed that gelding to have a poor post-race recovery. Trainer L. Morrison reported in the days subsequent to the event that the horse had strained muscles in its abdomen and as a result would be sent for a short freshen up.

Race 5 ROBINSON GRAIN TRADERS & ASSOCIATED SPONSORS BENCHMARK 65 HCAP 1200M:

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Apprentice N. Ogura, the rider of MORE OF THE ZAIM, which finished 4th, to view the photo finish. Having done so, Apprentice N. Ogura was satisfied with the judge’s numbers as semaphored and correct weight was given.

HANNIBAL AD PORTAS (R. Payne) blundered at the start and lost ground.

RAGING TO WIN (B. Newport) was slow to muster early speed
When questioned into the seemingly disappointed performance of RAGING TO WIN, apprentice B. Newport advised that the instructions were to race on the speed however after beginning slowly he was forced to race back further than anticipated. Apprentice B. Newport added that the gelding resented the kickback and after electing to shift out wider on the track approaching the 200m was unable to make up the necessary ground on the tight turning track. Stewards noted the explanation.
