Queensland harness ambassadors Brittany Graham and Danni-elle McMullen will team up with 20 of their female counterparts to fight ovarian cancer during the 2018 Team Teal Campaign in February.
For the fifth year the industry-led campaign will help the Women’s Cancer Foundation raise funds for the Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Graham and McMullen will wear special Team Teal silks and pants in each of their races between February 1 and March 11, with the remaining 20 drivers also to wear teal pants.
Racing Queensland, Albion Park Harness Racing Club, Redcliffe Harness Racing Club and UBET will donate $200 to the Women’s Cancer Foundation for a winning drive by any of the 22 participating drivers. Team Teal merchandise will also be available on-course at Albion Park and Redcliffe throughout February and March.
Racing Queensland CEO Dr Eliot Forbes encouraged everyone to get behind Team Teal in 2018.
“The Harness code has been a loyal supporter of Women’s Cancer Foundation and Racing Queensland is pleased to help raise funds for their important research. Almost everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer, which is why I encourage everybody to donate what they can,” he said.
Last year the Queensland campaign raised more than $50,000 for the foundation adding to the $154,000 raised by the harness racing industry nationwide.
According to the Women’s Cancer Foundation 1400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. More than 900 of these women will die. McMullen said she was determined to help the Women’s Cancer Foundation provide support to those living with cancer and its survivors.
“The Team Teal campaign is so important. Ovarian cancer doesn’t receive as much media attention as other diseases, and the survival chances aren’t as high as others. It’s important that people get behind this campaign to help raise as much money as possible for ovarian cancer research, as well as spread awareness to help save lives through early detection,” she said.
McMullen and fellow drivers will also aim to raise additional funds through GoFundMe, and will also look to plan a fundraising event with the help of sponsors.
