All roads lead to Group 1 UBET Blacks A Fake

By Alex Nolan

This weekend shapes as a crucial checkpoint on the road to the $200,000 UBET Blacks A Fake Queensland Championship at Albion Park on July 21.

The UBET all-in market may change complexity after key races in Queensland and interstate, including the Listed Wondai’s Mate in Brisbane and the Group 1 Len Smith Mile in Sydney.

This year, UBET’s sponsorship of the Winter Carnival has allowed Racing Queensland to offer a $50,000 bonus to the connections of any horse that can win the Group 2 Sunshine Sprint (July 14) and UBET Blacks A Fake double.

The race named after one of Queensland’s past champions will provide a glimpse of potential future champions to come.

Comeback kid Hughie Green returns for his second start after a 364-day injury layoff, following his scintillating win at Albion Park last weekend, while Our Uncle Sam will look to go back-to-back after winning the Listed Lucky Creed.

The race also features the 2016 UBET Blacks A Fake winner Ohoka Punter, which will now be trained by Queensland’s leading horseman, Grant Dixon.

Defending champion returns to the track

2017 Blacks A Fake champion Hectorjayjay makes his long-anticipated return to the track, with his new trainer Gavin Lang’s sights set on defending the title.

Hectorjayjay has not been seen on the track since claiming the 2017 Blacks A Fake in a barnstorming finish, and could firm in the market with a return victory on Saturday in the Popular ALM Sprint at Kilmore (Saturday 8pm).

Early Blacks A Fake favourites set to do battle

A race that shapes as the most likely influencer on the UBET Blacks A Fake all-in market is the Len Smith Mile in Sydney on Sunday. There, arguably, Australasia’s two best pacers and early Blacks A Fake favourites My Field Marshal and Soho Tribeca are set to do battle.

My Field Marshal will be looking for redemption in this year’s Garrard’s Sunshine Sprint (July 14) and UBET Blacks A Fake (July 21) after finishing second behind Hectoryjayjay in both races in 2017.

The likely Queensland Harness Horse of the Year, Colt Thirty One, trialed at Albion Park this week. The Grant Dixon-trained three-year-old has already won the Victoria and Redcliffe Derbies this year, and has one hoof on the $75,000 Queensland Derby on Blacks A Fake Night.

The Black Prince will line up at Newcastle on Saturday night, resuming after his G2 Carousel Victory at Menangle back in April. A strong showing would aid his chances heading toward the Queensland Derby.

Trotter to Watch

Former New Zealand mare Needle continues to impress in Queensland for trainer Brad Connelly. She will be out to secure her 10th win in 11 starts since joining the Connelly stable in January, and will be one of the leading contenders heading into the Queensland Trotters Cup on July 14.
