Course Overview
This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required for individuals licensed to operate as a jockey and compete in industry-regulated events in the thoroughbred racing code.
Jockeys are athletes who ride racehorses at race meetings, barrier trials and trackwork. A jockey possesses the highest level of race riding skills, requiring a high degree of decision-making skill and reaction time during races, and the ability to exercise judgement when choosing mounts and assessing horse form.
This qualification is required for industry licensing and registration in some states and territories. Refer to the relevant state or territory Principal Racing Authority for current requirements including selection into an apprentice jockey program.

Entry requirements
The program is designed for individuals currently engaged under the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC).
Applicants not yet involved in an approved racing environment are encouraged to contact the Racing Queensland Education Department for further information.

Important to note:
This program offers hands-on industry experience for individuals already engaged in a registered stable, stud farm, or pre-training facility. Applicants who are not currently involved in one of these environments are encouraged to contact the Racing Queensland Education Department for further information.
Course Specifics
This qualification prepares individuals for a career as professional jockeys, covering both practical riding skills and theoretical knowledge necessary for success in the racing industry.
The course includes substantial on-the-job/practical training, focusing on riding techniques, race preparation and fitness management, ensuring you are well prepared for the demands of race day.

Fees
Traineeship Eligibility: You must already be employed to enrol as a trainee with Racing Queensland. Speak to your employer about choosing Racing Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).
Cost: Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate.
Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Non-funded trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.
Information regarding costs will be outline on the agreed training plan which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at the time of induction.
